I really need some suggestions here. My 20 month old daughter has recently started putting her hands in her diaper when she poops. She will usually go into her bedroom or another room and go, then comes in and shows me when its all over her fingers and says "ewww". She usually wakes me up with poopy hands every morning. I tell her its yucky and we don't touch! Today she had handfulls of it on her hands, under her fingernails, on her face and her walls in her bedroom! I almost had a heart attack. She walked back to her bedroom for all of 10 minutes and comes in covered in poop. As far as the potty training aspect, i'm not sure she's quite ready. I've tried several times, She doesnt like to sit on her potty but she knows when she goes pee or poop. I'm at a loss here as far as what to do to break her of this! I don't know how much more poop i can take! (haha).

What can I do next?

Maybe try duct tape on the diaper or a onsie on backwards so she can't reach into the diaper so easily?

I've found that sometimes the best way to eliminate an undesirable behavior is to simply not make it an option. Use onesies on her ALL the time, under tops, pants, shorts, dresses, leggings, pajamas/sleepers, and put her in shortalls and overalls backwards so she can't undo the straps and get out of them. Make it as difficult as you can for her to get into her diaper, and make sure it's fastened snug and fitted so she can't wiggle her hands into it. Seems like a hassle, but it worked when my little guy kept taking his clothes and diapers off, took a couple of months for the novelty and fun of undressing himself to wear off, though he thankfully never put his hands in his poop. Now that he's potty training he is fascinated that his poop comes out of him, even got his face right up next to it once to examine it, but thankfully doesn't play with it ✿

I have 5 kids and a couple of them did this. I just kept them in onsies until they were potty trained...LOL As far as potty training. You can have her practice a couple times a day and make it part of your routine. My 16 month old will sit on the potty when I say "Let's go potty.." for like a second...LOL But he knows what it means and will even sit and say "SSSSSSSSS" then get up... I figure it's good practice. Good luck!

Our twin grandsons did this at about this same age and our daughter used duct tape, clothes on backwards, even wearing pj's backwards and sometimes they managed to get out in spite of all that. They took diapers off and made messes. With two of them it was just a nightmare. She did everything she could think of and finally they just quit doing it. They're 2 yrs. and 8 months old now so starting potty training and doing well with that. I had one daughter who did this at 18 months old and only did it one time, probably because of my hysteria. :-( It was awful. They do outgrow it. Someone suggested play dough and that's worth a try as they may like the feel of it.

Ha! Our 20 month old recently started doing the same thing. But only after he just woke up. He does not do it when he poops during the day. He only had to do it twice for me to run out to Carter's and stock up on 24 month onesies. He is no longer allowed to go down for nap or bedtime w/o wearing a onesie. That has worked. If he starts doing it during the day, he will be in onesies 24/7!!

I actually prefer regular shirts at this age, but I'd rather deal with onesies than poop everywhere!!

Just wanted to write and say I'm sorry, and that I am dreading this because I just know my youngest, now 15 months, is going to be one to do this. Right now, she's learned (on her own) to blow her nose, and she thinks it's just the best thing to blow her nose into her hands. Ugh...although not as gross as poo, I just know where we're headed. :) Good luck.

My daughter went through this phase too. It's disgusting, but she will grow out of it. After the third time finding poop on the wall, I got really mad. I told her she doesn't draw on the walls, and made her sit in time out for a while. After time out she had to sit quietly while I cleaned the walls, and lectured her a little. It's been like six months and we haven't had any more problems. Hopefully she will grow out of it soon, you just have to be really stern about it.

I'm guessing your daughter likes the feel of it. So... my suggestion is to let her experience that sensation BUT with something else such as playdough. If she gets to squish playdough often.... maybe the other behavior will fade away. Of course only let her play with playdough under adult supervision since she isn't even 2 years old.

I also agree to make it difficult for her to get into her diaper by using the shirts that snap under her private areas.

FYI my 22 month old started doing this at 20 months too, he was safe in onesies until recently...Now I have to also make sure he has shorts or pants on or he goes up the sides--ewww is right. Luckily no wall decorating for me, just had my bed sheets all covered in it--talk about disgusting!

He too just is not patient enough to sit long enough to finish. I have been able to get him to potty but no poo :( Hoping he trains sooner than my first he definitely seems more ready:) Good Luck

I just gagged thinking about going into a room completely covered in poop... :P I hope you get some good advice, because I can't even imagine having to go through all that more than a couple of times (the number of times my daughter did that).

I've heard of people using body suit type/sleeper type of clothing & putting them on backwards so the child can't take the clothing/diaper off. Might be worth a try.
