My four and a half month old daughter sometimes balls up her little fist and bops herself in the face, sometimes over and over. It doesn't seem to hurt her, but is this normal?

What can I do next?

Hello B.
It is very normal What I would do when she does that is just tell her gentle. She will learn.

I am also a stay at home mom of 3 and new to the area and also would like interactions with the outside world.

Hey. I think some babies at that age still don't have full control of their reflexes. My 3 boys i don't remember them ever doing that but all 3 of mine would bang their heads till they had goose eggs on them. My 2 year old still bangs his head on things. I know i am not much help but i am sure she is fine. If you are really concerned or it gets worse just express your concerns to her doctor.

Hi. I remember my son doing this when he was about that age. I don't think I ever got a "medical" answer for why, but he is 9 months now and his doing that is a distant memory and he is absolutely fine. I'm curious to know what your doctor says if you happen to ask him/her about it...which is what I would do if I were you and I was still worried about it at your next doctor appointment. I know it's hard not to worry about our kids being normal....but I do think this is just one of those things that some kids do and some don't. I also think you'd probably KNOW somehow if there were more to it...(and if you did feel that way, that you'd go to your doctor about it.) Hope that makes you feel better! Good luck!

My daughter didn't do that, but that doens't mean that its not common. Every baby is different. Maybe its just a "phase" and he'll grow out of it. I just hope hedoesn't start to find it funny!

Hi B.,
I know some of my other friend's children did this and the drs. told them that the child is doing it for stimulation and is learning "cause and effect." My child used to shake his head back and forth-same thing...stimulation. Your daughter is probably learning how everything works. Just imagine her as in a 3 Stooges Movie! Video it and laugh. I don't think it is anything serious, but if you are concerned, you could ask your pediatrician. Good luck!

My son used to do the same thing and I mentioned it to my friend who brought me her baby 411 book. It says that babies do this as a soothing techniqe and not to worry about it, it will go away. My son only really did it when he was drinking a bottle. He is now almost 9 mos old and hasn't done it in quite some time. Don't worry too much about it unless she starts hurting herself!

Both of my daughters did this, it always seemed to surprise them so I assumed it was learning about how their hands worked. My girls did do something that really bothered them and me... they pulled their hair. They would be touching their face and head, find something that felt smooth and grab hold! Then they would scream hysterically while I tried to unwrap their little fingers from their hair. :) Part of that same self-discovery thing I think. :)
