My Baby Doesn't like Milk!

My baby is 11 1/2 months old and she doesn't like dairy milk. She has been on both breast milk and formula and has taken both just fine. I've started giving her water in a sippy cup and she loves it. I've tried dairy milk in the sippy cup and a bottle and she lets it run out her lips and dribble down her chin. Then refuses to drink any more. It's crazy! My last two children never transitioned from breast/formula milk to dairy milk either. In fact they STILL wont drink it (they are 4 and 7 years old). I don't want another milk hater. I'm not sure what's going on, but if anyone has any tips, I'd sure appreciate them. We do have milk on the table every day as my husband and two older children LOVE it.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow, what great responses! A BIG thank you to ALL who responded. Every response was a help to me. I HAVE been brainwashed by milk marketing into thinking that cows milk is essential to my children's health. Believe it or not, I HAVE had the thought that it is natural for babies to ween, thus milk cant be that essential to their lives. THANK YOU Anjel and Jennifer for pointing it out and reaffirming my own motherly instincts! All my milk haters love cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, ice cream, etc. And I love the idea of Silk Soy with vanilla. Thank you for those who told me how to add milk to bm/formula to gradually introduce it to her [I think I will try it just to see! It would make her Dad feel better ;0)] Again, a heart felt thanks to all who responded!

Hi B. -
My son loves rice milk. We get the organic Rice Dream brand at Whole Foods. Cow milk is really not healthy for people anyway because it causes mucus buildup in the body which lays the ground for bacteria and illness. Rice milk might be a good alternative.

Good luck, L.

My son was the same way. When i weaned him at 15months and would not take milk i started rice milk. After a few weeks of that i read that you can combine breast milk and milk to introduce milk to a child. I had frozen milk still so i did 3/4 BM and 1/3 cow's milk and slowly decreased the BM and increased the Cow's milk. After a little while he was drinking whole milk. Now thats all he wants. He would rather have milk then eat. He is 2.5 now. Good Luck.

Why do you feel like you need to push milk? If it's a calcium issue, your baby can get what she needs from other foods such as yogurt and greens like spinach if she will eat them. Milk can contribute to many health issues, so if she doesn't like it, I would not push it. Here's a great article about milk: http://www.cure-guide.com/Natural_Health_Newsletter/Milk/...

that is good! dairy is so hard on our digestive systems because it is designed for bigger animals with different digestive processes. if it were raw it would be better but it is pasterized so all nutrients have been killed off by the heat and the calcium has been altered by the heat so that our bodies are unable to absorb it. if you are concerned about calcium for your children - almonds are a great source as is broccoli i believe. try SILK soymilk or almond milk.

incidentally, we use dairy products in our household because, let's face it, you can't beat cream in your coffee, and cheese and ice cream in your tummy =) but that is the information i found about milk =)

Babies do not need cow's milk to survive so do not panic. Water is better so be happy. You can try Silk soymilk if you insist on something other than water. They make a very vanilla for kids.

What ever is worrying you so much?

Have you been brainwashed by the milk marketing board?!?

Dairy, especially cows milk, is NOT necessary nor particularly healthy and so you have NO need to try to get her to drink it!

Since there are many better and healthier nut and soy milk alternatives etc for those that want a milk type drink or need it for any recipe - there is NO need to have cows milk at all.

Think of a cows unique stomachs, think of their kind of vegetarian diet, think of the kind of body cows milk is produced to build. Still see any need for it?
Bear in mind that ALL other mammals are WEANed off milk it's just for the very immature animal. The toddlers and adults do not / cannot drink it. We should not be drinking it in adulthood either BTW certainly not that meant for a totally different animal! It's been shown for years and years that it just clumps up the intestines and may hardly be digested. But it's socially accepted now (like cigarettes used to be).
There's simply too much invested in its production for everyone to be made aware of what I'm telling you...

So relax!
We often crave foods we need or dislike those not good for us - it's possible that your family instinctively chose best!

I agree with Ashley. I transitioned both my daugthers from breastmilk to formula (when my supply decreased). I started with 1/4 formula to 3/4 breastmilk for about 4-5 days then I did half & half for another 4-5 days and then 3/4 formula to 1/4 breastmilk for another 4-5 days before finally offering bottles of just formula. I did the same when I transitioned them to whole milk from formula. Both daughters handled both transitions easily. Good luck!

My oldest son was like that. I could not get him to drink milk at all. He really liked bananas so i got some banana flavoring and put some in is milk. He started drinking milk. Try to find a flavor that your little GIRL likes and add it to her milk. See if she drinks it better.
