Only the public school system test for free unless you find a college student working on special ed degree that has to do testing for college. The school system has to have a reason from a doctor that shows the problem will affect the child's learning.Start with your doctor. Talk to other parents, call a ADHD/ADD support group and sit in to hear other parents. (There should be a list of group times and places on line.)It never hurts to have a child tested. Although we think testing will find weak areas, it also shows our childs strong areas. We then can focus on the strength of the child if they need help compensating for weakness. Many times a child w/ADD or ADHD has so many things to add to a family but parents are so stress out they don't see that part. Many are gifted in art, music, math. Find something to help the child get rid of extra energy so they are not always in trouble for being too rambunctious. Remember that for a child with attention issues, noise is very stimulating. If you are in the car and need music, try books on tape or a station with soft music. You would be surprised at the difference! All this said, it took us 20 years to discover what works and then our child was gone from home. ADHD/ADD can be very stressful on a family. Many children end up with drug or law problems because they are seeking somewhere to fit in. Love your child and always let then know you accept them for who they are. Somethings they do may not be appropriate but it is the bevavior not the child you dislike. I can not express that enough. Praying for you!

Usually your local school district will test your child for no cost at all...but call them asap as it may take awhile for them to schedule your child.

You can talk to your daughter's school and tell them your concerns. They should test her though the school system. That is what my husband and I did when our oldest son was showing some learning problems. It didn't cost anything and the school put him in extra learning classes to help. My only problem was that the classes only helped for a while - so now I homeschool him and our daughter. I have seen major improvement in his learning since i started homeschooling. I know that is not an option for everyone so keep up with the school and keep on them to help your daughter. Good Luck.

M.,

If your daughter is enrolled in a public school you can request testing that will be free to you. They have a certain procedure they must follow, but are required by law to test upon parental request.

The special school district will do it for free, in fact it is one of your rights as a taxpayer.
