My 6 week old has been suffering from nasal congestion and some cough since she was 2 weeks. After doing the steam bathroom, saline drops and humidifier and nothing changed dr prescribes orapred for 3 days. Has anyone else given their little one this type of meds?

What can I do next?

Has your doc tested your baby for RSV? It is something you should insist on.

The home treatments you have done at home, & the prescription you've received from your doctor seem appropriate based on the amount of time she's been dealing with her symptoms. The Orapred is intended to reduce the inflammation, which may be preventing her from overcoming a viral respiratory issue, but it won't treat any viruses directly. I don't have personal experience giving it to children, but a short 3-day course comes with minimal risks of side effects sometimes seen in long-term steroid use (>14 days).

Gamma suggested below testing for RSV, which is a specific respiratory virus. However, the treatment for this virus is either a vaccine (which will not treat an active infection) for children at risk of complications if they get the virus, or Ribavirin, which is also used to treat Hepatitis C, comes with strong side effects, and is reserved for only babies at extreme risk of complications, such as babies with heart disease, cystic fibrosis, or significant prematurity. Otherwise healthy babies who get RSV simply treat symptoms & let the disease run its course.

Ultimately the choice to use the medication is a decision to make personally, & with your doctor. If you have specific questions about what to expect when giving it to your doctor, I would suggest you reach out to your local pharmacist & talk to them about the risks & benefits. I hope your little girl feels better soon! T. :)

It sounds all good to me.
Baby has to be able to breathe - and especially when they are so little, it doesn't take much to clog them up.

My grandsons use it for asthma attacks when they get very bad. Works great at opening things up. One thing they might not have mentioned is to keep the vapor out of your little ones eyes. The grandsons are old enough to keep their eyes closed while doing the treatment but you might want to put a washcloth over the top of the mask to keep the vapor out.

My kids have never needed prednisone, but I have friends with kids who did. Also, an adult friend who takes it for when her asthma goes bonkers. It helps a lot with her breathing.
