i would wait couple days before trying anything. My 7 1/2 month baby has been on juice since she was 2 months old. i use apple/prune juice it does it job. good luck
My 6 1/2 month old daughter has been eating rice cereal for about a month and a half now. We just started her on Gerber foods a few days ago. We started with green beans, because I had heard it's best to start with vegetables first since they may not like them after eating the sweeter fruits. She ate the green beens for two days. She was not a huge fan, but she tolerated them. Then I tried sweet potatoes after the green beans were gone. She took one taste and wouldn't try them again. I tried several more times that day and the next day. She wouldn't even open her mouth. Then a day or two later I tried applesauce, and the same thing happened. She wouldn't hardly even try them. One tiny taste and then she refused any more. I am worried that she's resistant to new foods, and I'm wondering how we will ever get her over this hump? Does anyone have any suggestions for getting her to eat new things? She won't even eat apple juice. (Our pediatrician had us try giving her that in her bottle for a constipation issue she was having.) Have I ruined her because I started off with a food that wasn't very tasty? Jeez, this mom thing is hard! :)
Thank you to all the moms who gave me advice on my daughter's finicky eating. It's the weirdest thing - all of a sudden, one day, it's like a switch flipped and she now LOVES eating ANYTHING. She will try new things and just gobble them up! I am so happy that we have moved past our road block. Thanks again to everyone!!

Hi there!
I have 4 children and they seem to all have a little trouble with the change...I wold have suggested to do sweet potatoes or squash first...peas and green beans are not as sweet as the other veges! What I did was use the cereal with the veges! I would give her a bite or two of the cereal and then I would put a little bit of the vege with the cereal on the sppon....then my kiddos would take it better!
I also put Apple Juice or White Grape in my kids cereal when I mixed it! They tend to like it better that way!
You will just have to be a little sneaky!!!
Hope this helps!
Hi B.,
What I used to do with my kids was put something on the spoon I know she liked along with something she didn't like. In your case put some green beans on a spoons and then out a bigger bite on of cereal, after a few times of this put more green beans and less cereal. As you introduce each new food keep on doing this.
Also for the fruits add in a little fruit to her cereal and then as you keep going more fruit less cereal.
Sometimes we have to be sneaky to get them to eat the things we want them to. Just remember 1 food that she is familar with and one she hasn't tried yet and as you keep going she will have eventually tried everything and eat everything. As for the juice, I don't know it might have been it was to cold or maybe mix it half and half with some water.
My son is 8 months old now and is barely trying apple juice. I also tried to give it to him when he was 6 months with no luck. He wouldn't even try it. So I wouldn't worry so much about the juice part. If she really needs it for the constipation the only way I could get my son to drink anything was to use a straw to put a little in his mouth. It's very time consuming but if she really needs it then it'll be worth it. As for the food, don't get discouraged. I read it can take up to 11 different times of trying a new food before babies will take to it. However I have a friend who's daughter just did not like baby food. So she would take whatever they were having for dinner and add some water to it and grind it up really good and she would eat that. It was the strangest thing to watch a little baby eat smashed up peas but wouldn't eat applesauce from a jar. So you could try that. It really does end up being a battle of the wills. You just have to be more stubborn then she is! My daughter is an extremely picky eater so I know how you must be feeling. Good luck to you!
Keep trying! It's takes at least 10 times sometimes. And go for the fruits now, and don't worry about the veggies (you can go back to them!) A lot of times it could be the texture, not just the taste. So, don't worry, relax.
Don't worry :-) My 9 month old daughter hates baby food. She will eat a few bites of finger foods sometimes (like crackers or chunks of bananas). I've done a lot of reading cause I was worried too. Babies get all the nutrition that they need from Breastmilk or formula until they are 1 year old. My daughter is breastfed and eats every 3 hours or so, so it is no wonder her tummy is full.
Babies will eat what their bodies need. When she gets older, (2 or 3 years old) you can be sure that by your providing healthy choices she will get all the nutrition she needs. Right now, her body doesn't need the nutrition. Baby foods at this stage are only offered so the baby can experience different tastes and textures. Its more for learning than nutrition. So just offer her different things, if she refuses, put it away and try again later.
Hi B., my name is also B., and i am new to the mom thing too! My daughter is now giong on 14 months, but i had the exact same problem with my daughter. I started feeding her gerber oatmeal and she loved it. She never really starting eating anything else until she was 8 months, so don't give up it just takes time. She never really go into the baby food thing so when she was 9 months i started cutting up greenbeans really small and feeding it to her and she loved it. Some baby's just don't do the babyfood thing. I do suggest as she gets older that you feed her the gerber graduates.
And don't worry about the juice thing you really don't want that diaper mess! But if you do try it again i suggest adding alot of water to it until she gets use to it.
Good luck!!
Don't worry, I think your little one is just telling you she isn't ready to eat that much food yet. My little girl didn't start eating solids well until she was about 9 months. She absolutely refused to eat the Gerber Stage 1 and 2's, but now she can't get enough of the Stage 3 foods. You also might consider trying to give her some table food. I got a baby food processor for about $20.00 and it will puree your food and make it smooth for the baby to eat. My daughter was very finicky when she started on solids. She wouldn't eat the Gerber foods such as applesauce and sweet potatoes, but she would eat the real thing. I would bake a sweet potatoe and mash it up and she loved regular applesauce too. My daughter is now almost 11 months old and she still doesn't like juice. Also, if you are breastfeeding she just may not be interested in anything else right now. I would not worry if I were you. I worked myself into a little tiz when my daughter wouldn't eat either. And then I finally relaxed and came to the realization that she is perfectly healthy and she will eat when she is good and ready. Your daughter will do the same. Just continue to try everyday and one day she will decide she is ready. Good luck and hang in there!
try dipping the baby food in fruit mine wouldn't try other thing other but after feeding them like that for a while and gradually putting less of there favorite on it. the other food has a bitter taste. I have 4 kids 18,13,7, 6.it worked each time. Good-luck
B.,
You may want to try mixing rice cereal with applesauce or a small amount with the sweet potatoes. It may be partly a texture thing. Kids can be such a challenge! On the constipation thing, I put dark karo syrup in one of the bottles of formula every day to help out with that. (my mother gave me that tip some 21 years ago!) :)
Best wishes,
E.
B., She is not ruined. She is just telling you that she is not ready and that is okay. Some children don't eat solids that young of an age. You also want to watch the allergens between introducing foods.
As another mom says "patience." She has plenty of time to grow up. The rule of thumb that states "veggie's first" is no longer the rule of thumb because breast milk and formula is sweeter than veggies, therefore children will usually like fruits better and will eventually change over to veggies.
(Just a thought the food that you eat and mash up, will taste better than jarred baby food anyway and saves money).
You will read all the above info as well as all the advice the other moms provided in the following book, therefore:
I suggest the "Super Baby Food" book by Ruth Yaron to everyone it is on Amazon for $14 or in bookstores for $19.
She is a naturalist, but overall her stages and nutrition charts are right on.

My 11 month son son was very picky at first when i started him on new foods. Is she a breast feed baby? I found other information that said that breast feed babies do not care too much for the sweet tasting foods since they get the sweet taste from mommies milk. I had to keep trying the food over and over for days and finally my son would open up and give it a try. He then became a great eater for about 5 months but now I have my own food issues with him since now he thinks he is a big boy and only needs to feed himself and refuses any vegatable and almost all fruits. I think babies just go through stages. I am a first time mommy too so by no means an expert but I know that everything I read says to be patient and keep trying the foods.

We had a similar problem with our son. Now 10 months and eating much better (knock on wood). One of the things we tried, that helped with new foods, was to mix a little of my breastmilk in with the food. If your feeding formula then try that. It made things a bit messier since it made the food a bit runny, but the smell and taste of the breastmilk (something he already loved and knew) toned down the strong smells/tastes of the new foods. After a while I could stop adding the milk and he was fine. Also, warming-up the veggies a bit helped. As for juice, my son still turns his nose inside out on that. He loves cold water to drink in his sippy and when he is constipated I try and increase his fluids (more water, you can try it warm in a bottle). I also find that feeding him a mixed-grain or oatmeal is better than just rice cereal. Rice cereal alone constipates him. And if all else fails, try mixing just a little pureed prunes in with his cereal.
Good luck!

A little about me ... first time Mom of a wonderful baby boy, working full time, age 37.
You could try mixing a small amount of the new food with her rice cereal so that she can barely taste it. Then, over several feedings, gradually increase the amount of baby food and decrease the amount of rice cereal in the mixture. Babies have way more taste buds than adults so everything they taste is more intense. Yesterday I was looking at a website (askdrsears.com). Here are two articles that will be helpful in the future when she is eating table food:
http://askdrsears.com/html/3/T030800.asp "Feeding Toddlers: 17 Tips for Pleasing the Picky Eater"
http://askdrsears.com/html/4/T040200.asp "The ABC's For Teaching Nutrition to Your Kids"
These articles are great and talk about how to introduce foods to children in fun ways and also how to teach your children about nutrition so that they can make healthy food choices on their own when older.
Also, it can take up to 12 times of introducing a new food before a child will even try it or begin to like it. Maybe if she gets that first taste enough times she will eventually become used to it.
Good Luck!
It will sometimes take up to 10 trys to get them to like a food. Just keep trying one food at a time. My pediatrician suggests trying one food for 5 days to make sure that they are not allergic before you add on another one. Just keep trying and don't give up - believe me she will like them. You can even try adding it into your rice cereal.
Just give it time - maybe she is not ready for the actual food. She seems happy with having cereal so I would wait a couple of weeks and try again. My little one loves the squash, but I to had to wait a couple weeks before trying something new.
I hope this helps!

I have a daughter who is four now. I started her out with veggies before the fruit. To this day, she likes veggies over fruit. I do not think you've "ruined" her or anything like that. Kiddos sometimes don't take changes to their diet well. Have you tried mixing the veggies with her rice cereal? Have you tried her on the infant oatmeal that Gerber has? You may need to try a different veggie like peas, carrots, squash, or something else. Sometimes the green veggies taste a bit different than the others. The big thing is to keep offering the different foods. At this age, you have to keep it simple but keep trying. Eventually she'll eat. Mine went through stubborn stages but overcame them with time. She still gets stubborn about trying new food. You just have to keep at it. You'll eventually find a veggie that she'll like. It gets frustrating but be positive and know that she will not starve or be ruined. Hope this helps.
First of all take a deep breath, count 2 ten, and relax.
My oldest did the same thing. It took time and lots of patience. I would mix a little bit of food in with the rice cereal. My kids wouldn't eat the baby food strait for months and they prefered to eat what mommy was eating. I would mash food off my own plate after they saw me eat a bite or two. They were willing to try the food then.
Best of Luck,
K.
Don't sweat it. I usually mixed a little cereal with the fruit or vegie. That way they get used to the taste with a texture that they are already used to. Just keep trying. She'll eventually love the new foods.
