she has an eye infection.

if she's not complaining, take her to the doc tomorrow morning. if she's miserable, take her to a clinic now.

it's probably infectious. take all the sensible precautions.

Not much info in your question, but crusted deposits stuck to the eyelid and in the eye itself is a common sign of conjunctivitis or other eye infection. The white part of her eye may be red too, although not always. This is a common infection (often accompanying a cold) and easily treated but it is highly contagious. If you have washed off her eye, the cloth you used must be washed in hot water. You have to wash your own hands well and do not touch your own eyes or her other eye at all. Call your pediatrician and find out if they have weekend hours or are affiliated with a clinic that does. If not, they may advise you to take her to a walk-in clinic or other center, or possibly the ER - but remember you must assume that she is highly contagious and she cannot be touching other people. This spreads as easily to others as it did to her.

Sounds like infection from the green discharge you're describing and the crust from sleep. My kids have had the odd one following a cold.

Very easy to spread so make sure you don't let anyone else use facecloths or towels she's used. I would wash her eye with warm water and our doctor suggested cotton balls to remove the crust and discharge or pus. That way you can chuck them out afterwards.

We've been given antibiotic eye drops for ours when they've had it. You want to be sure that's what you are dealing with, so if you're not sure have her checked out.

Good luck :)

As others have said, this is likely a viral infection although it may just be goo from her eyes's response to allergies and/or irritation. I have also had crusty eyes thst were not an infection. Their is not much so much goo. Neither condition is serious. The eye it's self is not infected. The eye may be pink because it is irritated.

Call the nurse hot line for advice. Doctors over the years have told me to put a very warm damp wash cloth on the eye to moisten and loosen the crusts. There is not much else that can be done.

Because conjunctivitis is a viral infection medicine does not help clear it up. Before taking her anywhere, call the advice nurse.

I know having an eye infection is scary. However, it's common. It will clear up on it's own.

Usually a crusted eye means Pink Eye, but I've never seen green stuff. Sounds like a call to your pediatrician is in order.

#1 is to clean her eyes out. Add a few drops of Baby Shampoo to a clean bowl of warm water and clean her eyes with a sterile wash cloth. Be careful not to cross contaminate the eyes, meaning, use 2 clothes, one for each eye. Baby shampoo is a great product to clean eyes with as it doesn't irritate the eye. You can clean her eyes as often as is necessary.

Often, just one morning of green gunk does not immediately mean conjuctivitis, or an eye infection. She could have scratched her eye the day before and this is the eyes way of cleaning during the night. Or she has severe allergies, and she scratched her eye, and there's lots of dust...meaning, this reaction could be a combination of her eye trying to self-clean.

Do you happen to know if your daughter has ever had a clogged tear duct in the past? A clogged tear duct can cause the tear to turn green and puss like.

If the green gunk returns tomorrow after a day of good washing, you need to call your doctor. There are also OTC (over the counter) natural eye drop remedies available at drug stores to assist with keeping the eyes clear.

She likely blew her nose and then later touched her eyes without proper handwashing. If that is the case, she has pink eye. You can wash the crust away with a warm cloth and get over the counter pink eye meds or take her the doctor.

When a kiddo has an ear infection, sinus infection, tonsil infection, eye infection, etc...it has escape paths to get it out of the body/drain.

When those routes are clogged with goo the infection drains out in other places. That's what the green goo is. It's drainage from, probably, her sinuses.

I'd give her some Children's Liquid Sudafed, real Sudafed, not the fake stuff. I get ours a local family owned pharmacy. They order in a couple of bottles for me from Rugby a couple of times per year. I use HALF A DOSE. Why give kids or others more meds than they need? Half a dose almost always opens those drainage routes and gets stuff going where it needs to drain.

I'd see if she needs an antibiotic. Sometimes they do need that help and other times their body will take care of it on it's own.

That sounds like pink eye and you can use a warm salt water compress until you get to the doctor.

When green goo came out the corners of my daughter's eyes it usually signaled an ear infection. As the infected mucus would push up and out the corners of her eyes.

Or it could be pink eye (conjunctivitis) bacterial or viral...

In either case a trip to the pediatrician is in order to get it checked out. As others mentioned until then carefully clean her eyes so she can open them (they will probably get cross contaminated as a 4 yr old will rub her eyes back and forth). But be careful you don't use the same cloth on each eye.

They will prescribe some drops or eye ointment. Hang in there mama!!
