Does anyone know when a baby's jerky movements stop? Seems to occur especially when he is sleeping.

What can I do next?

My 2nd daughter is 9 weeks today and she does it when she is awake. At bed time she sleeps on her side and she is fine but if I lay her down on her back she starts doing it. We tried swaddling but she hated it. I even bought the swaddlers. Waste of money for me but it might work for your baby.

Yup, sounds about right. It will ago away on its own one day, and you won't even notice it. I will take a few months. We swaddled for the first month, but were more relaxed about it after that. Not to worry!

It could keep happening until 6 months. The easiest fix is to swaddle! Practice, practice, until you get the hang of it. Figure out if your baby prefers the full-body, legs only, or arms only swaddle. My girl started to kick off her blanket at ~2 months, but the "startle arms" would wake her up all night--so we did the arms only swaddle (fold receiving blanket in half, lay her on one end of it, wrap tightly around the arms, and tuck the other end under her). That worked until she was big enough to roll over and unwrap herself (~4 months).

It is called involuntary "startle" reflexes. ALL normal in a newborn.
As the baby matures biologically and his/her nervous system, it will subside. But this is all normal and yes, they do it at any time and when sleeping. A newborn or young baby, does not have any "control" over their reflexes or impulses yet.

My boys had that jerky response until around 4 months. They both really liked to be swaddled snugly when they slept.

My son jerked until about 4 months. It was a pain "weaning" him off of the swaddle!

My son would jerk himself awake well into his 5th or 6th month. It's annoying, isn't it?!
