My 10 Mo. Old Has Had Some Diarrhea the past Couple of Days

My 10 month old daughter is a pretty regular pooper. She goes once a day, and sometimes skips a day here and there. The past couple of days she has gone about 6 times each day. Each time it isn't runny, only a couple of times it is. She has not had anything different in her diet either. I suppose she could have a stomach virus, but she isn't acting sick or anything. She is playing and in a good made like always. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

Is she teething? My younger son would always have loose stools when a tooth would break through. It doesn't sound like an illness since it is too irratic.

Good luck to you!

Stomach viruses really take a toll on kids, so it may be just teething. Regardless of the cause, be sure to offer plenty of fluids -- formula, water or pedialyte -- no juice. Bananas, applesauce and rice will help if the stool is runny. If you're worried about diaper rash, just keep her bottom protected with something like Desitin, vaseline or aquaphor. Watch out for aquaphor though. It has lanolin in it, which some people are allergic to.

Hello, I'm J. in Arlington. I had done childcare for the past 12 years and I'm a mother of 4 from ages 20 yrs to 8 yrs.
In my childcare years I have seen plenty to give a list of expectations:-)
She is more than likely teething. Probably in the back area, like the molars I believe that is the name for them. Usually a child will have diarrhea with no signs of illness sometimes a slight fever. You can check (if she will let you) by using your index finger and rub around the back area of her mouth(gums). Checking to see if you feel any lumps or bump(s).
Hopefully this will help.

I am sorry to hear about your daughter I am sure that it is a virus so the best thing to give her is Pedialyte to keep her hydrated and clear fluids as well as carrots, bananas, applesause and no dairy. It always helps my son when he has diarreah or is vomiting.

Good Luck and I hope it helps.

Our son just had this happen to him recently. Technically, teething does not cause diarrhea, just more frequent stools, probably from swallowing all the saliva. Bowel changes that frequent should definitely be reviewed by your pediatrician. Ours called it "toddlers' diarrhea"...apparently they get a virus and then become temporarily lactose intolerant. They recommended a bland diet, Pedialyte, and changing to a soy formula and removing all dairy from his diet for 1-2 weeks. First though, I would take her to your pediatrician.

N.,

My 10 month old has also had several loose bowel movements for the past few days. It was so bad that she had severe diaper rash...and she never has diaper rash. When I spoke with my doctor, she said it was probably some type of virus and that it may take a few days to run its course. She said to stick with a BRAT diet...bananas, rice, applesauce and toast...or anything bland. My daughter's diarrhea has already subsided and her diaper rash is getting much better. My doctor also mentioned to be sure to keep my daughter hydrated.
If you haven't already spoken to your pediatrician or if your childs diarrhea has lasted for more than a few days, I would contact your doctor to make sure it's not some type of allergy...especially since your child is a regular "pooper".
Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, we're not strangers to diarrhea in our house. Whenever our daughter would get it (and now our son, who's 8 mos), our pediatrian would tell us to make sure to give plenty of fluids. For the most part, formula was fine. If you're breastfeeding, though, I think I've read that you might need to give a little bit of water--either with a sippy cup or a bottle. Otherwise, as long as there isn't any major discoloration, I don't think it's anything to worry too much about.
If your daughter gets diaper rash (as mine always have with diarrhea), putting Aquaphor on the area w/each diaper change will make the rash disappear in a day or less. That stuff works wonders!

Good Evening N., Good Mother!!

From what I have read in Mama's Source community has pretty well provided great information. However, I believe you should always speak to your baby's primary doctor. Because, sometimes we all can tell you remedies that can be helpful to other mothers. But, the safe and professional advice to give is through your doctor. Let them check it out. We never want to take anything light when it comes to a infants. I would like to just address the situation on a watch and keep your child kind of close to you. You will really be able to provide better information on any changes or development to enable better diagnosis. Or if it continue, take all procaution and check the temper. This is not a good thing for a child to have symtoms that appears like a flu or Virsus. You will want to stay ahead of the situation and keep your doctor of all problems. Fever, diarrhea, eating, drinking and sleeping habits changes is alert sign that something could be warning; Keep eye on your child a round the clock through the night is manatory. Many of these signs allows you to access the situation on any severe ongoing or unknows. This may be a hard job if you work or have other responsiblities. Mother's on Mama's Sources will be there to help you. You may also call a hospital nurses station for good advice if you feel it is necessary. Some of us are up through the night sometimes. We are a concern community of great woman experiencing the same situation. I will keep your child and you in my our prayers. I know you will take care of your child, you seem so concerned.

Dear N.,
If it is a virus, then it just has to pass. One thing you can do is give her bananas and yogurt. Those help make things more solid. Also, notice if it has more of a distinct smell and look at her checks(on her face), if they are a bit red with lines on them there, then she is probably teething. When babies teeth the smell of the stool is very sour or just really different. If those 2 things don't seem to be there, then just keep her hydrated and do the bananas and yogurt. No Juice.
Good Luck.

My now 14 month old son, did this a few weeks ago. I think it was because he was teething. He was getting his molars. Check in her mouth to see if she has anything white sticking up on top or bottom in the back. Also be careful not to let it go too long. Little ones can loose a lot of liquid really fast through diarrhea. If this is still going on, I would definitely start her on pedialyte ASAP and more importantly call your doctor. They can dehydrate way faster than you would think. Don't mean to be bossy, but I am a nurse and have seen dehydrated babies.
