Musty Smell

Whenever I walk into our house, I smell a light musty odor. It is SO not like us to have anything musty or unsanitary going on in our house, so it's driving me crazy. We have two small dogs, but only hardwoods throughout our house with one large new carpet in the den, so it isn't embedded anywhere I can think of. Does anyone have any tricks or know of any great products for removing (not necessarily covering up) the odor?

What can I do next?

Is your house on a pier and beam foundation? If so, the smell could be coming from under your house. The dirt under your house should be dry right now (in most cases). If the ground is wet or damp, you might want to find out why--make sure you don't have a plumbing leak (there's an indicator on the water meter near the street. If it's moving a lot and there isn't water on that you know of, you might have a plumbing leak) and make sure rain water drains away from your house. You might need to improve your gutters and/or ground water drainage.

If water isn't an issue, maybe you could seal the access to under your house better. I think odors can seep up from the ground under your house, especially when it's hot.

Good luck! I've dealt with (and am dealing with it now) this in both of the 1950's pier and beam homes we've lived in.

Hi K..
I JUST read an article about people who have front-loading wash machines. Do you have one? They trap water and it doesn't totally drain, then it makes mold in the machine. You can check it out here:

Just an idea... that may be the culprit. Good Luck!

Do you have gas heat or something like that? When I moved into my first house it smelt fine at first but then I noticed the slight odor and that's what everyone said it was. After awhile you get used to it. Maybe thats what it is?

Is it maybe coming form the air conditioning ducts? Sometimes the air filters are really dirty and that could could be producing the musty smell.

They also sell vent fresheners that you can place in the vents to scent the house. You can pick them up at Lowes or Walmart.

Hope all works out for you

I'm having the same problem...don't notice it all the time. Seems to be worse when it's a hot day???? Can't figure it out either.
