My 7 yr old daughter has a noticable mustache and the other kids at school are starting to tease her about it. I new it was coming but not so soon. I have no idea what to do about it. should I shave it, wax it, or just let it be. HELP

What can I do next?

I would ask her what she wants to do, and although I would not usually support waxing of anything at such a young age, I think this case is different! Bleaching is a good alternative too...I had a roommate in college who used to do hers and it looked good! My niece, also very hairy, had a mustache of sorts as well and she did not want to mess with it at all even though it drove her mother crazy! ;) So, if she wants to do one of these things then I would do it, if she doesn't, let it be.

If she was older I'd say wax... but this young... unless it's stiff... I'd bleach it. You might even just institute a "girls facial night". Hair up in towels, white mustaches on, toenails painted. Something fun and grownup.

I'd spin it that way to HER as well. She's just growing up faster than the other kids in school. They make fun because they're still LITTLE, while SHE'S becoming a lady.

I like what Riley had to say about the spa party. I've used the Sally Hansen(?) creme bleach for YEARS. My mom first took me to wax my uni-brow and lip at age 10. I really appreciate it now. I'd try the bleach first and then later the wax if she's not satisfied. You can go to a nice salon that will make her feel special or try those wax strips at home, they seem more delicate than the hot wax. Good luck mom!

Don't let it be. Teasing at that age is merciless. If you bleach it, it's still there, so that really doesn't help. Waxing it DOESN'T make it come in thicker, it actually thins the hair out over time. My vote would be waxing or depilatory.

I would do the bleaching too or may be try waxing. With the waxing it could come in heavier. Another option is try to some depilatory cream. Sally hansen makes a good one. Be careful not to leave it on too long or she will get really red and irritated. There is some soothing stuff to put on afterwards. Good luck. I know kids can be mean.

I noticed a few people suggested bleaching it. That would be my suggestion. Sally Hansen makes a good facial hair bleach. Ive used it myself for years. Its much better than to let her be the girl with the mustache.

I agree with one poster -- give her some options, and let her decide. That way, she can be part of the solution, should she decide it's bothering her.

Good luck mom!

I would bleach it, there are products made just for that. Kids can be so intolerant of anyone different, ie different nationalities, sad but true. My daughter went to first grade with a little Hispanic boy with a mustache, which isn't a problem on a boy, so I can see how it can come out at an early age. My 9 yr old has really hairy legs. Not sure when I should let her shave. Probably soon.

there is a nair that is safe for the face that works well..try it on the weekend though because sometimes it's red for a day...and then by Monday she will be good...and I commend you for being an awesome mom that takes care of it rather than letting her kid be teased

i would explain her that it is OK to remove unwanted hair and it's not a big deal. I would look for a gentle, honey-based cold wax, her skin may be too young and sensitive for warm waxing and she could get a red mark under her nose. I really don't see anything wrong in waxing, she is going to do it a lot when she grows up anyways (sigh) so at least she'll be a pro with it by teen-age! A little mustache is no reason at all to endure teasing, take it off, for such little thing she'll be MUCH happier!!!

Hi,

Maybe I'm wrong for suggesting this (I hope not) but I have this problem, too. I didn't have it as early as 7 but when it did become a problem for me, I got 1 of those eyebrow razors from the beauty store and just started taking it off.

I remember being in high school with some girls and theirs was REALLY pronounced and I guess they just lived with it and they seemed to make friends and be fine with it.

But at 7 and 8... children just don't understand things (I don't think) and can just be very cruel. Perhaps without even realizing how it's affecting the other person. I don't see what would be wrong with shaving it off periodically.

I would talk to her pediatrician, and see if laser hair removal is an option. If not, I would wax or bleach. Shaving can lead to razor burn, and ingrown hairs which would be very uncomfortable on her face. Another option, is getting it threaded. This is a form of hair removal that comes from India that rolls thread across an area of skin to remove the hair. It is very effective. There are even websites that teach you how to do it at home.

If the doctor okays laser hair removal, this is a wonderful gift you could give your daughter, as it is permanent, and she won't have to spend the rest of her life dealing with her mustache (waxing, threading, bleaching or shaving).

Please don't just leave it alone. If she is uncomfortable with it, then as a good mama, you should help her address her concerns.
