Music Lessons for 5 Year Old

I started lessons when I was 5 on the piano. It has had such a impact on who I am today, I've been playing for 20 years. Like others have said, its easier to go from piano to other instruments. Usually private lessons will start off about 30 min per lesson, 45 if doable would be better if child can handle that. Tuition for the month would be between $130-200. My 5 year old daughter took a group piano class recently. Her instructor explained to the parents that piano is the best first instrument for children to learn, then when they are older, they can switch to other instruments with the foundation that was built by learning piano first. I've heard good things about the Suzuli method.

I am not in your area, but violin is a good place to start. I would search for Suzuki to start. Around here, private lessons are basically $30 per 30 minute lesson. Group lessons are good at this age.

honestly - I would ask her what she has an interest in and do that. however, there is TONS of research about how great the violin is as well as the guitar (guitar is a 'fretted' instrument, which ties in to math skills).
The piano is also good - it teaches chords and rhythm and practicing etc.

My daughter takes piano - I have her in private lessons, which I think is the way to go if you can afford it. Group lessons are fine, but they will make slower progress (not such a big deal unless you think she's the next beethoven!!!!!).

I don't know how price compares.... I pay $200 for 8 30 min private piano lessons. So basically that's $25/lesson. We go through a music school, which is also more expensive. You could probably find a grad student on craigslist or whatever who would come to your house, and that might be cheaper, if cost is a factor.

If there are any colleges near you - call their music dept. If nothing else, they should be able to give you some referrals.

Honestly, I would start her on piano.
Once she learns the piano any other instrument will be easier. Especially guitar, violin, cello, bass, any woodwind, but not the viola. It has a different key signature than any of the others. Brass are played differently too.
I have one who plays the trumpet and one who plays the violin. Neither have figured out the bass clef. THen the other two both play the piano and just picked up the flute and clarinet. THey can both read music, treble and bass clefs which gives them an advantage over those who only play a instrument that uses only one clef.
Also I took 8 years of piano and given the notes of the strings I was able to figure out the violin and my hubby's guitar.

I took piano starting at 5. It was awesome and a great instrument to play. If you do decide to give her music lessons just don't force her to play for people if she doesn't want to, that'll turn her off big time.
