Depends on how you define multiplication.. I remember learning it in 3rd and 4th grade too... but my kids start "skip counting" by 2's 5's and 10's in Kindergarten - which is the start of multiplication... how many two's do you need to get to 6 or 8 etc... by 2nd grade my son is starting actual multiplication of smaller numbers (2 x 6 or 2 x 8...).

My sons in second grade and he started learning multiplication after Christmas break. Doesn't seems to be hard core with it, but just the basics.

It depends on the school.
Public or private.
Whether it is an I.B. (International Baccalaureate) school or not.
But it seems, things taught are just getting more and more accelerated. Per grade. ie: kids learning things 1 year ahead. Ready or not.

My friend's son, who is in 4th grade, private school, is learning it now, in a concentrated manner.
Versus, my daughter, was learning it in 3rd grade. In a concentrated manner.
Then previous to that, it was introduced, in a more younger-aged-kid way, in 2nd grade.
Then in Kindergarten and 1st grade, they do simpler forms of it. ie: grouping, skip counting as the previous poster said etc.
My son is in the 1st grade, and for us, on our own and per my son, we are teaching him multiplication. And he gets it.
But again, teaching things, per age/grade.
ie: teaching multiplication to a 4th grader, is different in concept/explanation than it would be for a 2nd grader or 1st grader.

Then what about fractions?
My son in 1st grade is learning that too.

My kids went to a Montessori school and they all started at different times due to their own abilities. But definitely by 3rd grade they had all mastered at least up to the 10s. It just depended how quickly they worked through the materials. I know some children at our school that had started multiplication by the end of Kindergarten, and others who were still working with those materials in 4th grade.

My daughter is 7 and in 2nd grade, but in 3rd grade math. She began multiplication and division to some extend in 2nd grade math with the basic facts (8*7, 81/9), but this year in 3rd grade math she did both long multiplication (387*6) and long division (485/12), etc. By the end of 3rd grade, they are expected in most curricula to have all the facts memorized and to be able to do the longer problems quickly.

And, like other posters suggested, they really begin those concepts much earlier with things like skip counting, grouping, etc.

Third grade for both of mine. The summers before each, I taught them the multiplication tables. I found a cool tape (now CD's of course LOL!!) and played it in the car. We sang it together. I used manipulatives too. When we'd go for walks, I'd pick out stuff we saw for it. The nice thing is that they had a good foundation for it by the time they entered third grade, so it was easy for them to do all that was asked of them when they started the unit.

My daughter is in private school and is learning the concept of multiplication in 1st grade, but not exercising it entirely.

They just visually see it in charts and write the number. They have not begun to memorize the tables like I did in third grade.

My kids' school starts introducing basic/beginning of multiplication in K through the use of something they call '10 sticks' ...and then they progress from there.

My oldest son is in 3rd grade and they are progressing to basic/beginning algebra.

All depends on the school.

If you feel your child is ready to progress, introduce it yourself. No harm, no foul...they have to learn it sometime!

Depends on the school.

My sons preschool introduced it (Montessori)
Then his first public school district didn't do multiplication & division until 5th
Then we homeschooled for 5 years
His current school introduces it at 2nd grade.

Preschool
2nd
5th

3 schools all within 5 miles of each other.

____________

Homeschooling, we finished Singapore 1a-5b in a year at age 6, and moved onto algebra at 2nd grade/age 7, and intermediate algebra at 3rd grade age 8.

Which is common amongst homeschoolers. 3 years of instruction in 1 year.

There's no right/wrong time to introduce math concepts. When they understand it, and are ready to move on, you move on.

Our district uses Everyday Math. If I recall correctly, the basic concept of multiplication is first broached in first grade, is emphasized more in second grade with basic arrays and now that I have a son in 3rd, he is expected to have his facts memorized.

We are in a public school in a good school district. My 2nd grader does addition and subtraction right now but they have started a little bit with the concept of multiplication. They start practicing the multiplication tables in 3rd grade.
