Moving to Suburbs

Hi,

My husband and I are considering a move from the city to the suburbs. I don't know where to start researching the various towns, schools, home costs, etc.

Can you share any advice on how to start this process? Or your experience or favorite suburb? Our main criteria are good public schools (without being ultra-competitive) and some semblance of a 'neighborhood' feel.

Thanks,
A.

Hi A.
I live in Oak Park. Oak Park was voted very high for being a kid friendly place. The school system is awesome. They have a wide variety of things for kids and families. One thing that really sold me was the low class sizes and all the help you child can recieve right there in there own school without the parents trying to run all around trying to find help for any issues that might come up.

I hope this helps.

It depends what size house and cost you want to pay. There are extreme differences among suburbs when it comes to housing. The further west or south you go, the houses are more affordable, and more newer subdivisions/construction. However, the negative is usually the commute to and from those cities. Plainfield, Bolingbrook, and Oswego are extremely popular, growing communities these days, but the traffic is horrible. I have heard mixed reviews on Bolingbrook schools. Naperville schools are top notch, but again the traffic is horrible and taxes are high. Orland Park is a nice community too. I think there is a website that rate school districts. Good luck and let me know if you want to know about other suburbs. We looked for 4 years until we finally settled in our new home.

At any chance I get, I sing the praises of La Grange! We are really happy here. It's so close to Chicago and the metra is fantastic (16 minute express into downtown). We are in walking distance to the train, library, Borders, coffee shops, and other general shopping/restaurants. I don't feel at all like this is a competitive place to be. All of my neighbors are really down to earth and I've made a lot of friends here--without even really trying! It's got a small town feel, but it's certainly not isolated.

Good luck!
