Hi J.. My name is Annette and I am a mom in Fishtown as well. I have an 8 month old daughter. You are moving to a great neighborhood and there are a bunch of playgroups. There is also an online mommie group that is invite only and is for the moms in Fishtown and Northern Liberties. Please email me at ____@____.com when you get to Philly and I will be sure to invite you on the blog site and fill you in a little bit more about playgroups, pre schools, etc. Luckily there is a ton of stuff in our area. Welcome to the neighborhood!!

Hi J., good luck with your move! My family and I recently moved to Fishtown from North East Philadelphia. There are a few small playgrounds and parks in the area. The recreation center has a cute little playground.. my only gripe would be the occasional trash/bottles that are left there, probably from the older kids hanging out at night. There is a park in Northern Liberties on Laurel Street that is less than a five minute drive away that I love. The playground is pretty big and there is a big grassy area and a small garden. There is also a nice little outdoor walk just a few blocks away with a coffee shop, candy store, cupcake bakery, a few little restaurants, and two boutiques. And, one of the horse and carriage companies have a small stable that is also just a few blocks from the park. I am going to try the Little Gym in Cherry Hill for a mommy and me class (they go by age group) so I will let you know how they are. There is also a Bounce U in Cherry Hill for when your daughter gets a little older (the height requirement is 34 inches). Fox Chase Farm is in North East Philadelphia and they have different events on the weekends. The Camden Aquarium is very nice (they have indoor and outdoor exhibits and a children's garden)and it is less than 15 minutes away. The Philadelphia Zoo is a little more expensive but also close by (probably better for next year though when your daughter is a little older). I am still learning about the area but I will let you know if I find anything nice.

Wow! Has Fishtown changed! I've lived in the Philly area all of my 46 years, and it used to be a working class, Irish-Catholic, sort of rough neighborhood. When I was little, I had cousins who lived there, and it was just a basic, rowhouse sort of neighborhood where dads went to work at the old Schmidt's brewery, or maybe a little further up north at the Stetson factory or Tastykake. There was a lot of industry up in north philly back then. But that all died out and by the time I was in college in the early 1980s, Fishtown was a real mess, lots of drug dealing, etc. But today, you'd never know it! It's really the hot spot in the city right now, with a very tight community, lots of artist-types, and plenty to do. It's neat, and cute, almost like a little village. I think you'll love it, especially if you're near the river. The real draw seems to be the riverfront area.

Another post mentioned Mt. Airy, but that's not really close at all. Mt. Airy is completely across town in the sort of "arm" that sticks out of Philadelphia to the west. Fishtown is right on the Delaware River between north philly and center city. I'm so glad that it's an area coming back to life.

I don't have small children, and I only go down to fishtown occasionally, but I would suggest you start at the library. There is a beautiful old library at 1217 Montgomery Ave. I think it's in an old firehouse. I'm sure they have listings of community events, neighborhood groups, and story times for even the littlest ones. It's always good to get to know your neighborhood library.

Welcome to Philadelphia! I love the city. There is so much to do here. It's a big city, but it has a very small town/neighborhood feel about it. My youngest son is starting college at Temple University this fall (where my husband and I went to school many, many years ago), and he's excited about having Philadelphia as his college campus. There's so much to do and keep you interested!

Hi, J., welcome to Philly.

A great resource is the Child and Parent Center at Hall Mercer, which is affiliated with Pennsylvania Hospital and located in Center City. They have great playgroups year-round, which are so fun and a good way to start meeting local moms.

Enrollment for the fall is super-competitive, however, so if you're interested, make sure you find out what day they open registration for the fall and get your forms in that day if possible (it sounds crazy, but it is that competitive).

Here's their info:

Hall Mercer - Child and Parent Center
Contact: Beverly Levitsky
245 S. 8th Street, 3rd Floor
Philadelphia
PA 19107
Phone: ###-###-####
____@____.com

Welcome again, and good luck!
