Moving to Olympia

Hello. I'm moving to Olympia next month. I'm on a temporary assignment with my company until I move to Oregon in May. I'll be bringing my 18mo. old and three year old with me while my husband stays behind in NY to sell the house. I'm afraid the move will be hard on my three year old because he has a lot of friends here and loves his teachers. Does anyone have tips on how to make the transition easier for him and does anyone know where we can go to socialize with other moms and kids? I could also use some info. about daycare. Thank you in advance.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you very much for your responses. I will certainly be emailing you when I'm in town. After "God knows how long" of driving with Mom and Dad, the kids will need other children.

Jennifer,

I'm a long time resident of Olympia and one of the best things that I have seen to get my son (4 yrs old) social time with other kids is a program at the community center in downtown Olympia called Kindergym. The Olympia Parks and Recreation department actually has programs for kids starting as young as 6 months. The cost is pretty decent too.

I don't know about daycare options, I'm sorry to say and don't really have any tips on making the move easier. . . but I hope you will like your temporary home here in Olympia. Feel free to contact me personally through my profile if you wish to meet when you arrive and get a feel for the city. Good luck with the move and have a safe and happy holiday season.

I also attend Kindergym with my 2 year old son at the Olympia Center downtown. You can Google it for a website. We love it and it is about $20 a month, meets 3 days per week. Before that we attended the Toddler gym which is only 2 days per week. One or the other may be good to take both of the kids to at the same time, since you have to stay with them, and the staff are really nice and may let you sit in on both classes before you register to see which would be better for both kids. Olympia is a pretty children friendly town and with a little research and creativity there is always something to do. Another favorite of ours to do on the weekends is The Hands On Children's Museum, also downtown.
Also, I am currently searching for daycare and there definitely is daycare of all types available. I was looking for a non-religious based daycare for my son 2 days per week. It was hard to find a both part-time and the type of curriculum that I wanted, however I just met with a woman today and will most likely enroll my son with her. Her website is www.BrightBeginnings-Carmen.com
Also, in Olympia there is a free service for a daycare search that will give you a list of licensed daycare centers and homes their website is www.ccacwa.org They reply within minutes and it is an actual person who performs the search, not just a computer.
Hope this helps, I know it was a long reply, If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me. I have lived in Olympia for a little over 5 years now and love it!!!

Hi Jennifer,

You will like the Olympia area, and since you already have friends here it will make it easier on you.

I live in Lacey, just a few miles from Olympia and I like the kindercare day care's here. They are all very well licensed and educated. The center is run like a school, where they teach your children.

My email address is ____@____.com, if you want to email me when you get out here.
