Moving to Metro area--Where Should We Live?

I am a native of the Nashville/Antioch area. If you are having to drive to work to Vanderbilt, anywhere outside of the city is going to have traffic problems. If you can find something in the Green Hills area or West End then that would be a benefit but pricey. If you would prefer to "bear" the traffic then Hermitage or Mt. Juliet are nice choices. Good luck to you. I also have a family of three. My daughter is now 7 months and I feel the same as you do.

I work in the Vanderbilt area off of West End. I'm a native of Nashville and I have lived in many apartments/condos in the area. My favorite apartments are Legacy Hill Apartments. It's away from all the Bellevue traffic. The only time I go to Bellevue, is for groceries. Easy access to Highway 100/Old Hickory Blvd if you want to go to Brentwood or Coolsprings. They are located on Highway 70 between Belle Meade and Bellevue in a residential area. Depending on your daycare situation and the time of morning you need to be there will determine how long it will take you. If I don't have to drop off my girl at daycare I make in 20 mins to the parking garage. If I have to go Green Hills to drop my girl off, I can get to work in 35-45 mins. I'm usually at work by 8:30. Rent for a 2 bedroom is 795 and I think a 3 bedroom is 895. I've lived EVERYWHERE...and for the price this gives me the most for my money. Lots of working professionals in this community, so its seems to be quieter. All apartments have been renovated. Brand new carpet, paint, white trim in dining area, good size closets and bedrooms, brand new floors, dark counter tops, black appliances. Very modern. They are fixed up nicer than any other apartments in the area. Message me if you want any more info or have any questions about apartments/condos in the area. I recentley went shopping and I know the prices and the repuation of these places. Very very safe!

Try the Hendersonville (37075) or Goodlettsville (37072)area. Lots of Vanderbilt employees in the area! Great schools, parks, family activities, etc. Both areas are about a 25 minute drive to the main Vanderbilt campus.

We also had to move quickly because of a job. We settled on Sylvan Park. It is pretty close to Vanderbilt and the houses, while still pricey, are not as expensive as some of the others. The public school, Sylvan Park Elementary, has been great, the neighborhood has a traditional neighborly feel and there are rentals for the short term. The zip code is 37209 and the area goes from about 35th Ave to 54th Ave and generally the streets are named after states. best of luck.

Hi..my name is T.. I'm currently living in the Bellevue area which is west of Nashville. I work downtown Nashville and it takes me about 20 minutes to get to work. It's a really great area to live in that's not too close to town but close enough. There are a lot of condos and apartments in that area for reasonable rent. You can look on www.tennessean.com and look in the classified/homes section for places to rent. Let me know if you need any more information.

ps....in response to Lara's message...the Murfreesboro area might be nice to live in, but the traffic on I-24 is horrendous at any given time of the day. I would not suggest that as an option. Franklin and Brentwood are great places to live (plenty of shopping), but it's about 30 or 45 minutes south of Nashville and quite more expensive. Mt. Juliet and Hermitage are good suggestions, too. It really depends on what you're used to.

I don't know much about the areas near Vanderbilt ...except it is near downtown. I would look in Green Hills, Bellevue and Franklin.

There are several good areas to live in depending on how far you want to drive, etc. If you want a lower cost of living and a farther drive look in the Smyrna/Murfreesboro area, if you want a slightly higher cost of living and a slightly shorter drive look in the Hermitage/Mt. Juliet area. I noticed a "for rent" sign went up in front of a house just up the street from me in Hermitage this morning. Private message me if you want the phone #, I can get it when I go back out this afternoon. It looks like it's probably a 3 bdrm ranch, I have no idea how much rent they might be asking.

I live in Antioch and work Downtown Nashville. If your housing is temporary until u find a house, then I would suggest The Apartment Guide, they will help u with month to month options. There's a daycare/Pre-k school called Lil bit of Heaven, good choice. My grand daughter attends their and they're great with children.

I live in Smyrna and love it. Traffic is only bad during regular commuting hours. I drive in and out of downtown all the time and it isn't terrible all day. I've driven on all the highways during all different hours and in any city all highways will have problems during the commuting hours, Brentwood and the 65 are no exception. When it comes to safety I would not reccommend Antioch or north Nashville. I've known too many people who have moved out of there due to crime.

My suggestion to you is to go to the local news websites and read. You will see what areas are having problems. I like Smyrna because of the lower cost of living, low traffic in the city and it is an overall quiet place.

Thought i'd mention an area no one else has thats closer than hermitage/Mt Juliet, Antioch and Bellvue. We've lived and worked in the Vanderbilt area so when we bought a house we wanted to stay in that area..... we moved to Crieve hall. I drop my son off at day care 1 block over from vanderbilt and from our house its a 15 minute drive and I don't get on the interstate at all. Most rentals in this neighborhood of 50 and 60's ranches run around $800 to $1000 but you have a nice yard and its a very quiet safe neighborhood. We are south of nashville and east of greenhills... some people refer to this as the affordable greenhills. When you come to nashville its the neighborhhod east of the Harding Road exit off 65south. Easy grocery stores, library and parks close by plus we are in one of the best school disctricts in Davidson county.
