Moving to Denver Seeking Advice on Neighborhoods

We recently found out that we will be relocating to Denver, CO. My husband's job will be on the east side of Denver. At 70/270. We are working with a corporate realtor but would love to know of any family friendly Denver areas that are recommended by you. Gurnee has been a great area for us and we would love to find something similar. We want to be close to my husband's work so keeping the commute to a minimum is our goal. I may be a SAHM since I am expecting our second in 10 weeks and not sure I will be able to transfer with my job.

What can I do next?

I have relatives in both Denver and Aurora. Aurora is southwest of Denver. I have never been to Aurora so I don't know much about it.

Good Luck!

You may want to join the mamasource for the Denver area and see what the moms out there have to say.

That is such a great area! My brother lives in Highlands Ranch and loves it. We love visiting whenever we can. We live in Glen Ellyn and it is very similar. We also have friends who live in Parker and love it as well. I think both are suburbs of Denver. Good luck, it is beautiful out there!

My husbands family is out there. Its so nice. My Father in law is in Denver, mother inlaw is is Federal heights and my sister in law is in Lakewood. I think Lakewood od a nice place to live.
Since I do not know a whole lot about Denver, I am going to send this to my sister in law, she can be a great go to resource. That is the onlyplace she has ever lived and has done a whole lot out there. Her name is Dani.
GOOD LUCK

I am from Denver, moved here (Chicago) in 1999. My Mother in Law lives fairly close to the 70 270 junction in Arvada. I would think Arvada or Westminster would be your best bet, its fairly close to the highways, has lots of stuff to do for families, and is still really accessible to everywhere else. I think it is still pretty affordable too. You will get a community feeling like you have in Gurnee, but it will be a bit more accesible to downtown Denver, the mountains, and most of the major highways. Good Luck!

We moved from Denver to Naperville about 18 months ago. Since then I travel back and forth all the time.

Denver is beautiful and sunny about 300 days a year : )
Make sure you drink alot of water as you acclimate to the altitude.

We lived in the Lowry area and loved it there. It is in the southeast part of Denver. Very kid friendly. It is a new development-about 6-7 years old, I think. Everything is new-from the schools to the library.

The Lowry Town Center is fabulous and has events(kid friendly) all throughout the year.

It is close to Alameda and Quebec. Which is about 10 miles away from Quebec and I-70/270. Just south of Stapleton-which is at Quebec and I-70/270

Stapleton is also a new area and very nice. The houses are big but have very little yards. I mean very little yards.
But there are lots of parks close by. Lots of families in this area as well.

Aurora is just east of this area and has some nice communities a little farther south east. Newer developments. There is the Smoky Hill area-very good school district. This area is a little more sprawling and a little older, bigger yards. Farther from Downtown Denver. Important if you like the city. You are farther away from things.

My son went to Lowry Elementary-Denver Public school. It is comparable to the Naperville 204 school he now goes to.

Cherry Creek school district is renowned but not all the schools in the district are as good as others.

If you live in Denver, your child can go to any Denver public school. There is even a public montessori school that has a long waiting list, but you have time : ) It is closer to the downtown area of Denver, but if you live close to I-70 it is an easy commute. And trust me-Denver does not have anywhere near the traffic that the Chicagoland area does.

I-70/270 also hooks up with US 36, which takes you right into Boulder-about 30-45 minutes away. Amazingly beautiful drive.

Other area to consider would be Broomfield, Westminster.
Commerce City is also another area. The name has a bad rap but there are nice new places there and you get alot for the money.

Just thought of one more area-there is an older neighborhood (if you like older homes with more character-this is the hood to look into.) just west of Quebec and Montview. Not sure what it is called, but it is east of the Park Hill neighborhood. We have friends that live by 20th & Grape and love it there. nice size houses, bigger yards and more trees.

Hope this helps!

Cheers.

Hi. I have a cousin who lives in the Aurora area. She LOVES it. They are in the Cherry Creek school system, which is one of the most desirable school systems in the country. I have a friend who went to school in the Cherry Creek Schools and from what she says they are really good.

I myself am not all that familar with Denver other than visiting my cousin and friend. But if you want I could get some information from them and get it to you. Let me know.

I stayed in Lakewood, CO, very close to Golden, CO. It was great and a straight shot on the freeway to Denver maybe about 20min drive. It was beautiful there and just at the Foot Hills. I know Westminster is nice and Cherry Creek is within Denver, but really upscale. Everyplace was family friendly with lots to do in your own back yard (literally, we hiked in our own backyard!!!). Good luck to you and your family and a very happy birthing to you!!!

We lived in Denver before we had kids. I would recommend picking your neighborhood based on the school that you want to send your kids too and then find a house there. The Denver city schools are not known for being that great. We also found that we would have preferred to be closer to the mountains (we lived in Park Hill) so that we could quickly get to outdoor activities. You give up restaurants and the social/cultural aspects of a city, but the tradeoff is an awesome outdoor life. Enjoy!

Denver is a wonderful place. My husband and I have been looking into relocating there. As for places to live, I have friends that live in Highlands Ranch and Littleton. Those areas are nice and on the southwest side of Denver. Like any big city there are nicer areas and not so nice. I'm sure your broker will be able to help you select the town/suburb that will be best. As for activities, I encourage (if you are all ready not) become a lover of the outdoors. There are so many parks with trails and great vistas. No one really lives in downtown Denver like they do here in Chicago but there are many places to visit. Good luck and explore Colorado. Great day trips from there.

I lived in Denver for 6 years. It is a great place to live and the weather in fantastic. There are more sunny days that Miami beach, and no bugs!
We lived in the Cherry Creek School district which was fantastic. Your husband will be working at 70/270. My husband used to work near that location when we lived there and we lived in south Arapahoe county, near Parker Road and Orchard. It took him around 30 minutes to drive to work. As I said, we picked that location because of the schools. We made some great friends as well. Your kids are younger so I do not know if that is what you are looking for. I guess it depends on how long you will live there. I know that there are some newer developments in the Stapelton area. Let me know if you need any further info.
