Moving Next Week

So we are finally moving to Long Beach next week. I am just trying to tie up some loose ends. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good pediatric dentist? Also I would love to find a part-time job that works around having kids? Finally, what kind of clothes should I be packing? Obviously my kids won't need snowpants and boots. Is it warm enough for sandals and shorts?
I am pretty nervous but it should be fun. The weather is cold and dreary here so I am ready for sun.

I wish it was sandal and shorts weather, but no we are getting colder out her on So Cal. Although you wont need snowpants and boot, you will need pants, long sleeves and a jacket. Depending on where you are in Long Beach you are still fairly close to the water so it is usually cooler than inland where I live. Usually my daughter will go to school with a sweatshirt in the morning and by about 11 am she has taken it off. Sorry I can't help you with the dentist or the part-time job ... but good luck!!!!!

Hey D.,
Welcome to CA! :)
I don't live in Long Beach, but have worked in Long Beach in the past. Although CA does not get as cold as MN, it is cool, especially if you are closer to the water. We get a lot of morning haze which usually does not burn off until 10:30-11 AM making the air cool and damp. So, although you may want to bring some sandals and shorts, I am thinking that you will want to bring clothes that can be layered. Layering in CA for kids usually entails: long pants, socks and tennis shoes, t-shirts and a sweat shirt or sweat jacket. In January and February it is even cooler, so having a heavier jacket would be beneficial.

Well I live in long beach and the weather is sort of crazy right now. One day its chilly one day it's hot. The temperature averages about 65 at night and 70 during the day. Its definitely warmer than Minnesota. LOL

Congratulations on your move! I know you've been planning for it for quite some time as I've seen your posts several times and have responded to at least one other. Good luck next week as you officially make the transition.

Regarding a pediatric dentist in LB, I have 3 recommendations. I've heard amazing things about Dr. Cortez who's been mentioned a couple times below. I've also gone to Dr. Stella who is amazing as well. However, both of those dentists are not preferred providers for Delta Dental. So, I switched to another dentist and he's wonderful. His name is Dr. William Worden and his phone # is ###-###-####. We've been with him for 6 years and I've been very happy.

As far as the weather is concerned, it is a bit warmer right now than usual...low to mid 70's (however as someone mentioned it's much cooler in the AM with the marine layer). Pack/dress how you feel comfortable. My son wears shorts almost daily. A sweatshirt over his t-shirt suffices in the AM. However, my daughter is much cooler and dresses more warmly with a sweater on most of the day. The ground is cold, so bare feet are little much, but I wear flip flops regularly...with pants, though. And, even though we have warmer weather than most of the country, we still like to dress in fall attire. Most of us ditch the summer look. We crave seasons, but wouldn't change the mostly consistent weather for the world.

Again, good luck with your move. Feel free to contact me for more info/connections.

D., while I cannot recommend a dentist - I can tell you that the weather this time of year varies depending on the time of day. I would have a couple pairs of shorts for the odd warm day, pants, and layers on top - t-shirt and sweatshirt, t-shirt and jacket, etc. We wear flip flops all year round except for days that are really cold - so you may want to have both sandals and tennis shoes available.

Congratulations on coming to Long Beach (I'm guessing you mean the one in CA?)

At the moment I wouldn't go shorts and sandals but you could do during day shorts and a fleece. But at night jeans & fleece would be recommended. Keep the snowpants & boots for the mountains & the fun times you can have up there.

Once you get settled in you should look up the local mommies group: www.coastalcuties.com

Again congratulations and Happy Thanksgiving!!

Hi
Depending on your willingness to drive, a great pediatric dentist in Manhattan Beach - half hour on the freeway from Long Beach - is Janelle Holden. Her office is top notch and she is fantastic with kids. I recommend you keep your jackets handy as it is pretty chilly in the evenings. Right now the weather requires shorts and maybe long sleeves during the day and a sweatshirt in the morning with pants/sweatshirt at night. It is likely to start to rain soon as well. It will be splotchy, but you will need rain gear and will run your heater in December and early new year. Spring will amaze you. And yes, the kids do wear crocs/ flip flops all year long:) Make sure you note the ratings for your beaches before you go on outings... because of the harbor, there are times when going in the water can be a little less desireable. Good luck in your move!

Very exciting news! I was born and raised in Long Beach, but now we live in Lakewood, just a few blocks from the border of the 2 cities. We love Dr. Santos Cortes on Los Coyotes in Long Beach. His associates are great, too. ###-###-####. It gets quite chilly when the sun goes down, but there are plenty of warm afternoons. When you get settled, check out the beautiful El Dorado Park in Long Beach, specifically the Nature Center off of Spring Street. The floating lighted Christmas trees in all the parks and Alamitos Bay are a pretty sight this time of year. Hope you all have a fun and safe trip. Good luck, B.

Hi D.,

You mentioned looking for a part time job that works around having kids. My husband and I own our own business and we're always looking for sharp, motivated people. If you are interested in learning more, give me a call at ###-###-#### once you arrive so we can set up an appointment and we can share more information with you. You would be able to set your own schedule so it's great for moms. I look forward to talking to you. Have a safe move. It is a lot more warmer here than in MN, but I don't know if it's warm enough for sandals and shorts. :-) Although it's supposed to be 77 degrees on Thanksgiving! :-) Take care.

Yes people wear sandals and shorts year round here. But during the winter you would probably feel better in jeans and a light jacket, especially after the sun goes down. We do get some “cold” rain in the winter months. Don’t throw out those snow pants and boots, because our local mountains offer snow sports and activities. Snow is much more fun when you only visit it. The good news is that the weather here is truly lovely. The bad news is that the unemployment rate is 12.2%. Finding work maybe a challenge right now. Long Beach’s population is about 400,000 more than Duluth’s so you may want to include the area you going to be living in when you ask for docs of dentists. Best of luck to you and Welcome to the land of endless summer.

Hi D.,

I live right next to Long Beach, Seal Beach, and you will love the area. In regards to part time income, I am expanding my team and have something to offer you that you can work your own hours, have flexibility, and you can get started right away earning money. There is no additional purchases you need to make, no inventory, no deliveries, and no monthly mininums requirements.

Let me know if you would like to talk more about this.

You will get sun! It is warm enough for sandals and shorts...some days. Then some days you will be more comfortable in pants and a jacket. Just check the weather cause like someone else said it is back and forth lately. Good luck with the move! :-)

Hi D. .

You are going to love being out of the cold. My kids
had shorts and sandals on yesterday. The weather has
been great. I was born and raised in LB and just moved
back. We also go to Dr Santos Cortes and like him for
my little ones. We are a very active family and do
activities daily. If you want to email me once you are
settled, I would be happy to help you with fun things
to do. Have a safe trip to beautiful CA.

It's not long beach, but it's right on the border. Dr. Susan Ishioka is INCREDIBLE! The kids love her and her awesome staff.
5122 Katella Ave. Los Alamitos ###-###-####
She comes in weekends for emergency appointments, she does ortho too if the need arises. Nicest woman on the planet. Will work with you if finances are difficult. My favorite story is she took off my friend's son's braces for his high school senior portraits and put them back on for free!
Call her, you won't be sorry. Her husband, Dr. Pai, shares and office with her and does adult dentistry, he's super wonderful too!
