Morning Sickness and Business Travel Coming Up--help!

Hi Mamas,
I'm about 6 weeks pregnant and am experiencing really uncomfortable morning sickness. I'm not throwing up, but I feel nauseated pretty much all day with only small mysterious breaks. It's sapping my energy and good humor.
I'd be okay coping with this but I have a business trip coming up where I'll be traveling to Madrid for 8 days. The thought of two long-haul flights with transfers and lots of hard work and possibly eating at irregular hours has me really dreading this experience. Is there any magic pill or herb or homeopathic remedy anyone knows of? Should I wear some kind of mask so I don't smell the awful airplane air for 12 hours? Ugh. I'm afraid I can't easily get out of the trip and I'm also not ready to tell my employer.
Any and all advice is welcome.
Thank you so very much.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your wonderful advice and support! I ended up getting a prescription for Zofran. I looked at the situation as a challenge-- I was going to do my very best not to take the medication. I didn't take it until the flight home and then wished I had taken it sooner instead of suffering! The trip was pretty hard with bumpy flights and different meal schedules and not-very-appetizing heavy food (i.e. lots of ham, olive oil & garlic). I'm REALLY glad to be back home eating familiar foods. I still feel nauseated nearly all the time and am trying to reserve the medicine for special circumstances. Hopefully, it will all pass soon.
Thanks to you all again.

I agree with keeping something in your stomach. I also found that certain spices increased my nasea, and it was different for both my pregancies. The first time, I couldn't eat black pepper, but cayenne was okay. The second, oregano did horrible things to me, even the smell. For both, cumin made me lose my appetite after a few bites (and left me ravenously craving unhealthy snacks later because i hadn't eaten properly!). Maybe some sleuthing and trial and error before you go? My OB also said Tums were okay. I started drinking soy milk instead of cow's milk, because regular milk increased my nasea (which sounds like it was similar to yours).

Dear A.,
While pregnant with my second child, I didn't have the same kind of morning sickness but something similar to what you are describing. What in the end helped me was constantely eating... Just little things and after three months it passed, so my weight didn't climb beyond what it should. Good luck, A.

Hi A.,
I had a lot of nausea during my first trimester and did travel by plane during that time. What worked for me was bringing a bunch of healthy snacks onto the flight and snack every 3-4 hours. I found keeping my blood sugar levels in check kept my nausea at bay.

Hope this helps.

I battled with this too, and my midwife prescribed some medications. Zofran more recently and phenergan earlier. The first prescription I had was for phenergan suppositories, but using the suppositories was pretty uncomfortable for me.

Although I had near-constant nausea, I could keep food down, so the pill form worked much better.

I also used a combination of B6 vitamin and Unisom (it's sold as an over the counter sleep aid, but it's actually an antihistamine). The combination used to be sold as an anti-morning sickness drug -- called Bendectin -- in the US, but it's no longer sold in the US (just from a fear of lawsuits, it's available in other countries and has been used for more than 30 years, I think.)

My nausea was AWFUL, but I tried to use the least medication possible. If I could manage without anything, great. If the B6/Unisom kept it under control, great. If that didn't work, then I took the prescription pill.

I never had much luck with other methods (keeping something in your stomach, eating crackers before getting out of bed, etc.)

Hi,

I had really bad morning sickness. With my first child I lost 10 lbs and the second about 5lbs. I was taking some drugs sorry I can't remember the name of it just call your dr and they will get it for you. They are great but they are a suppository. Talk to your Dr. and see if you can get it. I am not sure if they will give it to you if you not throwing up.

Good luck.

P.

Hi A.,
I have heard of some pills that do help with morning sickness. I have no clue where you can get them, however you could ask your doctor. But ginger does help with nausea! Whole Foods has some ginger snacks. I never ate them when I was pregnant but they have helped in the past when i felt like throwing up. Anyway I hope everything goes well with the trip!
