Morning/ALL DAY Sickness

HI Ladies. I am 7 weeks pregnant with my second baby. My daughter is 15 months. I had horrible morning/all day sickness with my first pregnancy. It lasted 6 to 18 weeks & basically kept me bed ridden most of the time. I ended up getting on Zofran for about the last 3rd of that time & it was a miracle drug for me-curing about 85% of my discomfort. This time around I went to the Dr @ 5 weeks & got the perscriotion send to the pharmacy in case I needed it again, it would be there. Like clock work @ 6 weeks & 4 days, I woke up with the sickness. I waited 2 days to see if I could handle it without meds & on the 3rd day began with 1 pill of the 2 suggested per day. I did that for 2 days & now am taking the 2 per day...only problem is that it is not working half as much as it did before-I am still naseated all day, with a constant sour stomach & feel exhausted. I am literally useless right now which is not an option since I work from home for my family business AND care for my daugher full time...I was just reading on babycenter that quite a few women that had great success with the medication, did not have success the second time around....AHHHH! I am apparently joining that group of women! Are any of you out there, 'those women'? & what worked for you? Thanks

I had morning, noon and night sickness until I examined my diet. I figured out the triggers (for me it was anything with fat, grease or butter)stopped eating them and it got much better. Try keeping a journal of what you eat and see if you can figure out what might be triggering you.

Oh man, I feel for you. With my first, I was so nauseous 24/7 for the first 6 months that I almost didn't have baby #2. It took me over 6 years to work up the courage to face that misery again.

My sister was determined to solve this during her own pregnancy and my 2nd pregnancy. None of the "normal" remedies worked for us, so she researched like crazy. What really helped alleviate the nausea was making sure we never had an empty stomach. And if we just ate carbs (like crackers), it was too light, it made our stomachs too acidic and didn't help the nausea. So we both pounded lots of lean protein like eggs and chicken. This staved off hunger and also didn't make our stomachs too acidic and sour.

If we ever allowed ourselves to get hungry, the nausea would hit full force. So we always tried to eat protein pre-emptively (ie. every 2 hours before we got hungry). Good luck to you!

Sorry to hear your sick,i know how it feels! I only have one son but was sick and in the hospital every day for i.v and vitamin b shots, dropping from 117 lbs to 96. until they gave me the "miracle drug" (as i called it also) zofran and it helped so,so,so much at least enough to get out of bed by myself and actually keep a decent amount of food down but stop working so well and i was back in kaiser for shots and i.v.s sick as a dog. One day a nurse(who i often seen) asked if i ever had thyroid problems and i gave her a clueless look and she said shed like to test the levels because she had the same symptoms and turned out she had thyroid problems, sure enough the test came back i had hyperthyroidism and thats what was cause most of the fatigue and weight loss.. after i got that under control the zofran could do its job and i got to enjoy the last month or so of my pregnancy... may be you can look into checking your thyroid levels, hopefully you get feeling better and congratulations on the new baby!!!

With my daughter I was sick all day too. Don't know when you are taking your vitamins, but I started to take them at night rather than the moring and the sickness stopped.

Sucking on sour candy can sometimes help with morning sickness. I had good luck with it during my second pregnancy. Also, have you tried Sea Bands? They are pressure point bracelets used for motion sickness, but help with morning sickness too. I had horrible morning sickness with both kids, but didn't want to use medicince unless I absoultely had to, and both these things helped along with all the other information you probably already have--don't let your stomach get empty and don't eat huge meals etc.

I had severe nausea and vomited quite a lot. The only thing that helped me was acupuncture. Go to someone who specializes in pregnancy. My acupuncturist was awesome - she even helped me control my blood sugar numbers (I had gestational diabetes) and also helped induce my labor. Her name is Abigail Surasky and she's in Berkeley.

First, CONGRATULATIONS!!!

OK. Here's some things to try...
1. Acupuncture
2. Red raspberry pills / tea
3. Pregnancy Tea (Traditional Medicinals)
4. Ginger beer (I like the Fever Tree brand best, less sugar, more ginger)
5. Crystallized Ginger
5. Saltine crackers (Especially first thing in the morning)
6. LOTS of sleep / rest (Often nausea is due to being so tired, your digestive system can't function properly especially if it is happening after you eat.)
7. Eat the minute you feel hungry

Given the severity, I would go for acupuncture first. I have been seeing an acupuncturist, but she has been more focused on balancing my overall energy because I haven't actually thrown up yet. However I find I feel less nauseous for a few days after seeing her. She has told me she has a treatment that will work immediately if I ever actually toss cookies. I am currently taking Solaray's Red Raspberry pills, drinking ginger beer, and carrying crackers with me everywhere I go :) Hope these ideas help!

P.S. I will be 9 weeks tomorrow and like you started with the nausea close to 7 weeks. My other 2 pregnancies, I only needed a little red raspberry, but this time the twins are making it worse... Silly little beans :)

An advice nurse at Kaiser told me Benadryl works on nausea and is safe when you're preggers. I recently had the stomach flu and was miserably nauseated and 32 weeks preggo. She told me to take 1/2 the reccommended adult dose during the day and full strength at night as long as I don't mix it with anything else like Tylenol etc.
It seemed to really help!

Hi J.

I'm so sorry to hear that you're having a rough time. There is no misery like morning sickness. I'm 9 weeks pregnant with an 18 month old and have also been sick as a dog all day. I'm taking Zofran as well and it has really helped. My prescription says to take one 4mg pill up for 4 times a day for nausea. My doctor recommended starting with three times a day and that seems to be enough for me. You should first check your dosage and then talk with your doctor or pharmacist about increasing it. That might be enough to give you the relief you need. One thing I've learned about these antinausea meds is that they accumulate in your blood stream. That means that you may actually feel ok when it's time for your next dose, but if you don't take it then, you might have to pay the piper in 6 or 12 hours. I tried to drop my dose to 2 pills a day for a couple of days because I was feeling decent. It turns out I was just riding this cumulative effect of the medicine the first day and then I plunged in awful nausea and vomiting again the second day. Once I increased my dose again, I felt better, but it took a good 12 hours on the higher dose to recover. My mom's a doctor and spent some time explaining to me how these meds work. Once I understood, I've been able to manage much better.

I've done some reading in medical journals as well and I've found that vitamin B6 can help with some nausea as well--up to 100 mg a day. Ginger can also help. Mostly, I found that I just need to ask for help when I need it and rest when I feel I need it. My husband and friends have been awesome about watching my little one so I can sleep more. I hope you have some people around who can offer you similar support.

I hope you start to feel better. Hang in there. I know it's awful coping with the sickness, but remember that there's a beautiful baby at the end of all this! Good luck!
