Has anyone ever been "scammed" by a debt settlement company? What did you do? Is there any way to get back what you paid?

Hi Grace,

If you feel like you were scammed, contact your State Attorney General's office. Often they will investigate these issues, and hopefully help you.

Hi Grace,

I don't mean to be rude, but since you didn't provide any details, are you sure you were "scammed", or did you not fully understand the agreement you made with them. Debt Consolidation companies are kwown to have questionable practices, but most of them are legal, so your chances of recovering your money isn't very good.

Either way, I recommend contacting the BBB. You should also try contacting the National Consumer Law Center.

Good luck.

We had issues with a debt consolidation company. it was a mixture of scam and us not completely understanding the "procedure" they wee using. supposedly they were getting the companies to take less. we were making big payments and the company was going to send the payments. turns out they wouldn't tell us exactly what the companies agreed to take. then they also didn't tell us that they would be collecting their "total" fee ( a big percentage of what they were able to negotiate for but they never would give us the numbers) up front and then start making payments to the companys. we made $1400 a month payments for 6 months before we finally called it quits. no payments had been made to any of our creditors. we were able to get back about $4000 of our money and that was all. there had to be better ways to handle it but we finally gave up and filed bankruptcy.
