My daughter is 11, she has always had a mole on her lower back, but last night it caught my eye when she was asleep next to me, i'm not sure if its my imagination, but it seems to look bigger, and i think she scratches it. Its worrying me, as I know some moles can become cancerous. she has a few on other spots of her body, but it doesnt seem concerning. Her dad used to have moles when he was younger, he is no longer a part of our lives so i have no idea if he still has them. plz advise, what should i do?

What can I do next?

Just call a dermatologist & make an appointment. It's always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to moles.

Next time she is in for a check up, have the doctor look at it. I took my son to a dermatologist to have his mole checked and they said *generally* if it is smaller than a the eraser on the back of a pencil you don't really have to worry about it, but just watch it. Also, they said it should be symmetrical. If it is asymmetrical, there *may* be cause for concern. Her doctor will know...take her in if you are worried.

I had an itchy mole on my back a few decades ago, it grew somewhat rapidly. Since it itched my doc took it off. She said if it wouldnt have itched it would have been considered cosmetic to remove it. Of course they have to test all moles for cancer afterwards but generally it is not cancer. I'd get it taken off now rather than later because it will leave a little scar. The procedure doesnt hurt tho :)
Just remember to tell the doc it's itchy.... so you wont have to worry about insurance covering it.

Roxy, don't even question it. Go to a dermatologist a.s.a.p and have it checked out. I would even remove it if she's the right age.
good luck

I'd definitely get it checked. I have had many moles removed that were pre-cancerous. I have lots of moles, and the ones on my body that I thought were the ones I should be concerned about were not. I was totally ignoring the moles that were actually the problem ones. The moles they have removed looked more like freckles to me, and since I have freckles, I just thought that's what they were. I thought the raised ones were the problem, but they haven't touched a single one of those. I'm told by my dermatologist that as a very general rule, once the mole raises out of the skin, that basically means it has aged beyond the point where the cells would become irregular and cancerous.

Either way, I'd take your daughter for a whole body exam by a dermatologist if she has multiple moles. If nothing else, he can put your mind to rest that you don't need to worry about any of them.

Just take her in and have it removed. It is a simple outpatient procedure and they'll likely biopsy it if you tell them that you see changes.

I had my first removed was I was around 10 because it kept getting scratched by the hair brush. I don't remember why, but that took a couple of stitches. However, I have had half a dozen removed from various locations since and never had another stitch.

Have her checked by her pediatrician. It is pretty clear to them what normal and abnormal growth is.

In my experience, a doctor will take off a mole if it causes her any irritation. I've had several removed, the first was on my lower back and it rubbed on the waistband of my jeans. That was enough of a reason to remove it.
