Mirena IUD - Fuquay Varina, NC

I am wondering if there is anyone else who has the Mirena IUD that has experienced weight gain and feel that is the reason. I had my third and last child in February 2008. After I had him, I lost 15 pounds pre-pregnancy weight and was feeling wonderful. I had the IUD inserted in June 2008, and ever since then, I have been gaining weight. Now, I am about 15-20 pounds more than I was before I got pregnant and I have been dieting and exercizing and my weight is still climbing. I had the same experience when I was on the depo shot, so I had asked my doctor before I chose this method about whether or not this caused weight gain, and he said no. Does anyone else feel that the IUD has caused them to gain weight?

What can I do next?

I also had weight gain with the Mirena IUD. I have had weight gain with every hormone based birth control I have used. I dont see how doctors can tell people they wont have weight gain. Everyones body is different and can react differently to hormones. Just be careful if you have it removed...I got pregnant 2 days after having mine removed!

The Mirena IUD is hormone-based birth control, like the pill, so it could cause you to gain some weight. Hormones in birth control react differently with different people, so while MOST people may not experience weight gain, someone else might. Like you. If you don't want the possibility of weight gain, use a method that doesn't have hormones in it, like a barrier. Also, Paragard IUD doesn't use hormones. Ask your doctor. Good luck!

While I was pregnant, I had gestational diabetes, & was put on a special diet which helped me lose 33 pounds. I then had Mirena put in after my 2 month check up and I did gain back my weight. That was a year and a half ago, and just recently I have started to lose weight without much effort. I think that you have to let your body & hormones readjust to everything after having the baby. Just keep taking care of yourself and keep a positve attitude. Good luck!

I have also noticed that over the past year since I have had the Mirena IUD I have gained weight. I just contributed mine weight gain to getting older and not being able to eat like I used to. I am going to be 31 and it just seems like it won't go away.

Yes I am so glad that you wanted info about this beacuse I am having the same problem too. It seems like every doctors trip I make I am tipping the scale more and more. I have only had my mirena for like a month and a half right now, and I have noticed the tremendous weight gain like I am getting wider. I also try to work out and nothing. I too have asked my doctor if it causes weight gain and he said no. I was on the depo shot and didn't start to gain weight until after my 4th year on it, but this is all happening way to fast. Please let me know how it turns out.

In short..yes I've had the same issues. Except my little girl just turned 2 and the issues have not stopped. Last month I really tried to get on the ball and eat better, drink lots of water, and work out 5 days a week. Normally when I would do this I would at least lose some water weight within the first two weeks...Instead, I gained 6 lbs!! I was so discouraged. But then I thought, holy cow, I must be pregnant since I'm gaining. Nope- two HPTs were negative. So I'm actually going to get it removed here in the next few months or so. I'm about 40 lbs over weight and just feel aweful. I never thought it could be the Mirena until I started doing some research and realized that no matter the level of hormones, each person's body reacts differently, and unfortunately I gain with artificial hormones. Oy! Back to condoms I guess. Good luck to you!

The Mirena IUD is hormone-based, that's why I didn't choose it since, like you, I had problems with other forms of hormone birth control methods. I would ask your dr about the Paraguard IUD. I had that for over 6 years and never had a problem. Good luck!

Yes! I have an average build and was alway able to keep my weight the same over the years. I'm older, 46, so that's a long time to stay prety much the same weight, IMO. Now since having the getting the Mirena one year ago I have gained a total of 15 lbs!!!!! I'm so upset about it needless to say. My doctor wouldn't say either way about the weight gain...just said it was possible. :-/

I got the Mirena due to some heavy bleeding issues so I sure hate the idea of going back to THAT. But I have decided to have it removed once we are all settled and find a new doc. (we are in process of moving)

I have had the Mirena now for almost two years. My doctor also told me that this form of birth control wouldn't cause weight gain and that has been true for me. I was once on depo and gained about 20 lbs. I have personally been very pleased. I'm sorry you haven't had a pleasant experience thus far.

I got mine 3 years ago and no weight gain. I was on depo before and couldn't loose any weight and gained a little. But with the Mirena, I have been about to maintain a healthy weight. I think that the hormones amounts are so low that it shouldn't affect weight. Maybe you need to try changing your types of exercises (try Spinning or Zumba). Weight training will help with weight loss too.

I have not gained weight with mine, but I have not lost it either - I waited until 3 months after my daughter was born to have it put in, but since then I have not lost more than a couple of pounds (which keep coming back) of my pregnancy weight even though I am breastfeeding. My daughter is 11 months old and I am still breastfeeding multiple times a day. You would expect this to burn lots of calories... of course, I'm not the best about watching what I eat all the time, but I think I usually do a decent job. I've enjoyed not having a period for the last couple of months though.

I hate to even wonder this, but have you taken a pregnancy test? It's supposed to be 99% effective, but supposedly it can get expelled without you really realizing it. Just a thought - best of luck!
