Midwife, OB or Doula - Practice or Practioner

I've yet to settle on what kind of prenatal care I want. I'm leaning towards a hospital birth or birthing centre within a hospital with either a drug-free experience or minimal pain relief....hoping for a hypnobirth. If anyone can give me a name of a practice or practitioner with hospital privileges in NYC that would be great.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thanks so much for the info and recommendations. I'm going to enquire about all your suggestions. Super, super helpful....so grateful. I'm the first out of my group of close girlfriends friends to have a baby so we're all pretty clueless on how it all happens.

Awesome! First of all if you are going with natural birth I wold love to recommend a priceless book to read from cover to cover that'll help you embrace the miracle & experience that is giving birth and the wonders of the female body and its capabilities: Ina May's Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin. This book inspired me to leave my OB and search out a midwife even when I was already 4 and half months along. I highly recommend Maureen Rayson- www.mraysonmidwife.com in the Chelsea area in NYC AND she attends births at St.Vincent's Hospital. I have a few friends who gave birth there with their midwives and they all have raved about the nurses, the doctors & the care and attention they received and how pro-natural birth they are. Best of luck and many blessings to you in this beautiful journey. Hope this helps =)

Drs Worth & Mussali have 2 midwives in their practice and have the lowest rate of drugs and c-section in the city. They work out of St. Vincents in West Village.

I had a great experience with M.O.M (Midwifery of Manhattan) and delivering at the Roosevelt Birthing Centre. The midwives (Sylvia, Amanda, Rebecca, Roseanne and Laura) are all super knowledgable and calm.

I also saw Isa Herrera at Renew Physical Therapy during my pregnancy who got me set up with a TENS unit for pain management during labor (google it) -- long story short, I labored at home, got to the hospital at 10:30am and gave birth to my first baby at 11:12am. Yup. 42 minutes after hopping on the bed. It's amazing what the right attitude towards the birthing process can do. Get excited!

Hello P.,

I had a natural birth at the birth center at St. Lukes Roosevelt Hospital. My midwives were Barbara and Elizabeth from CBS Midwifery. http://www.nycmidwives.com/

They are WONDERFUL and I felt so cared for throughout the whole pregnancy and birth! I would highly recommend them. Good luck!!

Congratulations on choosing a natural birth! I would suggest looking up Judith Halek, who is a wonderful and experienced doula here in NY. You could also try go to www.dona.org for some doula suggestions. I think that any experienced doula you find will have quite a few suggestions on a good practitioner for you, but if you wanted to look into some people yourself I would check St. Lukes-Roosevelt's website. They have some wonderful doctors there that are really into natural birthing, and from what I understand their birthing center, though it has strict rules, is wonderful. Make sure you contact their practitioners ASAP as they tend to fill up quickly. You can also check with the Metropolitan Doulas Group. They meet in Manhattan and they could give you a lot of help.

I hope this was helpful. Happy hunting!
