My mom always told me you can tell a lot about a person's status by looking at their shoes. Uber-shiney shoes just SCREAM rental. Tell hubby to polish his nice dress shoes and he will look great.
My husband and I are attending a formal event this weekend and he is purchasing a tux, since we expect to get plenty of use out of it over the next several years. He does have some very nice dress shoes, however none of them are as shiny as the ones that usually come with tuxedo rentals. Is it ok not to have those uber-shiny shoes?

Here are full sized photos of George Clooney and Johnny Depp in their Tux. Notice their shoes..

I am not associated with this website that I have attached. It gives you an idea of what is available and suggested for shoes to go with a Tuxedo.

They don't have to be patent, but should be black, shiny leather, thin soled and preferably a slip on, not laced. That will look best with the formal appearance of a tux. He should probably just buy a pair for the tux so he has them for future use.
He can ask for a nice pair to buy when he buys the tux. He doensn't have to wear the patent shoes, those are for prom. =) They have a lot of nice formal shoes that would go great with a tux. Keep the box and store them when he doesn't need them to keep them nice and clean.
A nice pair of dress shoes are the best option. They say those shiney rentals are horribly uncomfortable and most guys don't wear them unless they don't have a pair of nice dress shoes. Comfort is key for a man getting all dressed up for an event.
Maybe you could just rent the shoes whenever you needed them, instead of buying a special pair. If he wears dress shoes that he owns, they might have that "worn" look and ruin the look of the tux.
