Medical Center of McKinney on Hwy 121

I recently took my oldest daughter to the closest hospital to our house for a medical emergency. I had debated which hospital I was going to take her to while we were on our way there because of a past experience with the baby. Our youngest had RSV when she was 3 weeks old, and we had a bad experince at Medical Center McKinney because they didn't know how to set up an IV on a tiny baby. They are used to dealing with adults, so after several attempts, and several bruises, they were finally able to get the needle in her hand. I thought that they would be different in the emergency room, so I took my oldest daughter there for a bladder infection, when it was keeping her up all night. To make a long story short, I found out that they don't even know how to take care of children in the emergency room!!! When we left the hospital 12 hours later, she was worse off than when she went in!!! Has anyone else had this problem with them? I want to make everyone aware of how bad the situation is, and find out if anyone else has had similar problems with them. From now on, we will go all the way to Allen to get treatment because I can't put my daughters through this again. It was a total nightmare for the whole family, but especially for the girls.

I've only heard bad things about MCM- my dad cut off his finger & waited for 4 hrs until they decided- they couldn't fix it & sent him to Plano. I LOVE Centennial Medical Center- Frisco. I have never had to wait & they are very compassionate. I had a Dr. even start diagnosiong when I was doing paperwork.

It has been interesting reading all of your experiences at MCM. We also had a bad emergency room experience.

When my oldest son was 2 we took him to the ER for a jammed/possibly broken wrist after a bad fall. The Dr. didn't see anything in the x-ray that said that his wrist was not broken. He examined him further thinking he might have injured his elbow. The Dr. "popped" his elbow and said that it was a simple case of nurse maid elbow - impling that I jerked his arm out of the socket.
When we couldn't calm my son down because of the pain they gave him a sedative and called the Dr. back. We went back in for more x-rays and shortly after that he popped his elbow back into place.
To sum it up, he dislocated my babys arm and had to pop it back into place to fix his mistake. In addition he charged us for 2 surgeries (1 for popping it out of the socket and 1 for popping it back in). We won't ever be back!

My mom, who is a nurse, warns people to stay away from that hospital, based on the experiences she has had there and the experiences of many others that she has spoken with.

I think it is worth it to drive the extra 3 minutes to Allen!

Thank you to everyone who has shared your stories, I knew I wasn't the only one out there!

I have had a really bad experience with that hospital as well. My mom passed away in the ER there.I don't want to get into the details.I will just put it this way we were shocked when we found out. I have rarely heard any good stories about this hospital. I have taken my kids to presby Allen and they are great. The nurses seemed to be trained on placing IV's in children! I highly recommend presby Allen and it's really not that much further than the McKinney hospital.

I've heard horrible things from everyone that has ever been there...and some from people who work there. I had one experience there when I took my mom after she fell and broke her arm. I wanted the closest place so I took her there. She was about to pass out (It was a bad break and fall) and I went in first to get a wheelchair. I was calm and explained what I needed...the response response "She doesn't need a wheelchair, she broke her arm...not her leg!" I decided right then to make the drive to Allen. I would never go there again.

I had a nurse in McKinney tell me to never ever go there. Seems the news stations should know about all these problems. So scary to think that in this day and age this many people could have this many problems.

My neighbor nearly died because Med Center of McK misdiagnosed him as having a gall bladder problem instead of a ruptured artery and sent him home. I have never heard a good thing about them and will avoid going there as best I can.

This hospital almost killed me. I was brought by paramedics after a fall, they discharged me with "maybe a stroke". I had cranial bleeding and my foot was diagnosed as a sprain and have had to undergo major foot reconstructive surgery. I am maimed for life, but can't sue because of tort reform.

This is a very dangerous hospital!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have NEVER heard anything good about the McKinney hospital, but I've had several friends with terrible stories to tell. I just had surgery at Baylor/Frisco (LOVE that hospital) and the nurse there told me NOT to use McKinney. She said to go to Allen or McKinney (or Frisco) if we have an emergency or need care.

I have made sure that my family's dr's use the Plano hospitals. We have to drive further, but the piece of mind is well worth it.

You know, I haven't been to that hospital, but I did have a HORRIBLE experience at Centenial at Coit & 121. Be careful of that one too! Scary because I live in McKinney and I haven't heard anything good about ANY of hte hospitals!!! I know that a good place to take kiddos is Acute Care Kids between Alma & Custer on 121...that is an after hours place.

My experience (in a short version)...I was in my 1st trimester after dealing with infertility. I was having cysts rupture and this particular night it was a bad one. We went to the nearest hospital Centinial(spelling) and I was there for almost 6 hours...the ER doctor did not know what progesterone was (which I was on to help the pregnancy "stick") and after being in there for so long he gave me a shot of Morphine in my butt and told me to call my OB in the morning. By the way, I was the only patient in there that night.

I will be driving to Allen if I need to for any other emergency!

I'm so sorry to hear about your experience at MCM with your girls!! I visited the ER at MCM twice during my first pregnancy, and I wasn't impressed at all with the service I received. They didn't do much for me, and luckily I was okay until I could consult with or see my doctor the next day. After reading all of these reports about children's experiences, I definitely won't be taking my son there, God forbid that we should ever be faced with that decision. In defense of the L & D department, I had a wonderful birthing experience at MCM, thanks to my wonderful doctor. Their night-shift post-partum care nurses left alot to be desired though...such horrible attitudes.

Thanks for the heads-up on MCM with children. I really appreciate it!!

The few times that I have been to McKinney Hospital, it has been a pleasant one. I had to take my two yr old at the time to the ER becuz he slammed his head on the concrete. We were seen right away, and then sent home after treatment. I dont recommend going to Allen Presby if you are pregnant. I went when I was having contractions and they said I was at 3cm but after 5hrs I hadnt dilated anymore. They sent me home with Ambien and Demeral..I live in McKInney so its about a 15min drive I guess. An hour and a half later, I was delivering my son standing up(remember I was drugged and out of it)in the bathroom. He dropped on his head and wasnt breathing. My neighbor got him to breathe. Thankfully, he is almost 4yrs old and is doing great. My favorite hospital would have to be Plano Medical Center. Good Luck.

My husband and I both work in health care and we live in McKinney. I have NEVER heard anything positive about McKinney Medical Center both from strangers and from people we know. We take our 3 year old to Presby Allen on Exchange parkway and it is WONDERFUL. I would never hesitate to go back there. The care is excellent and they like kids. Our pediatrician is in McKinney and their office recommends Presby Allen because of the care. I am a Nurse Practioner and I am really picky. I have never used McKinney Medical Center and I don't plan to just because of what I have heard. My husband does go there sometimes for his job but he never says anything negative about anyone or anything. I hope this has been helpful.

H., I am so sorry for your experience. I too have had a terrible experience there. 10 days after my son was born I was rushed to the ER in McKinney and into emergency surgery. The surgery was fine but the care afterwards was horrible. I will never go there again. Two months after I left the hospital I received a letter stating that if I happened to use the mouthwash provided by the hospital I needed to be tested for a serious bacterial infection because it was contaminated.
I always take the time to drive to Allen Presby. My two children were delivered there and everyone was incredible.

H.,
I have had a bad experience at the McKinney Hospital emergency room as well. I have never seen so many incompetent people in the medical field all in one place. It was scary. I finally took my daughter somewhere else after 4 hours, realizing they had no idea what they were doing. To make a long story short, I was telling a girlfriend of mine whose husband is a doctor about what happened there. She told me that her husband told her to NEVER take their kids to that emergency room if there was ever an emergency.

I had a bad experience here as well. My 3 yr old busted her chin open. We spent 5 hours at the emergency room. They did not put the numbing gel on when we got there so it took longer because we had to wait on that. And I had to tell the doctor that he needed to put one more stitch in because it wasn't closed good and I am an accountant, not a doctor. Not to mention I don't think he did a good job anyway. That hospital needs to be seriously evaluated and straightened up.
