Medicaid for Pregnant Women

I was wondering if anyone knows about the medicaid program for pregnant women, regardless of their income. I have a friend who is looking into this, who is a college graduate-so doesn't have a full time job, and doesn't have insurance that covers pregnancy. I know a little about the program and have done some research for her, but I would like to know more to pass along to her. It's a new program, from what I know, and that not all doctors take this, but the hospitals do. Any info, web site you can pass along would be appreciated.
thank you for your input.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for passing along such great advice, knowledge - and your experience. I have passed along all this information to my friend to ease her mind. I know this can be a scary time for anyone who is pregnant and doesn't have the funds or insurance that covers pregnancy. Hopefully more doctors will accept this program in the future.

I don't know if you have seen this website http://www.hhsc.state.tx.us/ but that is the main one. It is pretty easy to get on Medicaid. You just go into the office depending on what county you live in and fill out all the paper work. It is a long process but very simple.

I'm trying to get on medicaid right now. I have insurance, and it's my understanding that medicaid will pay the remaining of what I can not pay. If you can find a doctor that is located actually in the hospital, or at least around the hospital, then you should be okay. She could start contacting doctor's and just asking if they accept medicaid. It takes about 30 days before they will get back in touch with you about whether or not she qualifies for medicaid. Don't forget about WIC, she needs to sign up with them even if she hasn't had the baby yet. Good luck and let me know how things are going!

Elaine,

My Dr takes Medicaid and she is wonderful. I had a rough pregnancy and she was fabulous. She is in Presby Dallas. Her name is Natalie Light. Her office is in the Womens building of the hospital.. There are some great Doctors that will take medicaid. Do the research and I would try to stay away from the "medicaid clinics". Tell your friend good luck and congrats

I was on Medicaid for our second child. You have to keep up with the papaer work and sometimes you have to sit in the office for a long time and sometime you have to deal with the workers who place judgements on you that can make you feel awful about yourself. BUT, she will qualify and she is intitled to it. Take advantage they pay for everthing and I found an incrediable OBGYN who I am still able to use with our new insurance. Good Luck!

It seems there is ALOT of various information. I suppose it depends on the person/patient. I had Medicaid when I was pregnant, I was not employed either, full time. Medicaid pays EVERYTHING. ALL Rx, ALL Hospital, and if you go to a DR that takes Medicaid ALL of that is covered al well. Natalie mentioned they did not cover private rooms or RX's. They did for me and everyone else I have ever talked to about it. I had a private room and I was even in there for a full week after delivery, ALL covered. I also was sent home with pain meds, covered! Stay away from 'Medicaid Clinics' to see a DR. If you go to one of them you never see the same DR and you have to re-explain your condition EVERY time you go in. Just find a DR in your area that is taking Medicaid.

Once you fill out the application to apply for Medicaid it takes 4-6 weeks to get any results. Once on Medicaid you automatically qualify for WIC, get it! It is so helpful. Depending on income you may qualify for Food Stamps and may other goverment funded aids. When you go to DHHS They can guide you through everything.

I was on Medicaid with both of my children and they covered everything like the doctor visits, prescriptions, hospital stay, but they do NOT cover vision or dental (only if you are under 21). I asked them and they said no, because I had to go to the dentist and eye exam when I was pregnant and I called to make sure. I agree to go to the local DHS office and fill out a form.
The only catch is that you must go to a doctor that takes Medicaid and some of them do not accept any new patients. I know there is a doctor in Granbury (my doctor-OB/GYN) that takes Medicaid but the pediatrician doesnt take any new patients. In Oklahoma, you get to choose your doctor.

I see the other post said that they did not pay for some of their prescriptions or the hospital stay, but they paid for everything for me and my child. I never had to pay anything out of pocket and I went to very nice hospital and had a wonderful doctor.

The law states that all pregnant women qualify for medicaid, unless income is very high. Have her go to the local office and fill out a form. If she leaves it there or takes it home and faxes it in, it should only take a few days to process. A caseworker will call her and ask her to send in a copy of her birth certificate and pay stubs or other proof of income (unless she has no income). Once those are received she will get a welcome packet in the mail and will need to choose the plan she wants to be enrolled in. The welcome packet includes 3 physician directories, one for each plan, that list the doctors in that area that accept that plan. She can look in there, find her doctor or another recommended doctor. I recommend calling the number and doing over the phone rather than sending the form back. Community First is the biggest and most widely accepted plan. A temporary medicaid card will be received with the welcome packet and she can use that to go to the doctor. Once she's enrolled she'll start receiving a monthly card. The doctors will ask to see it at EVERY visit! If she has any unpaid bills right now, medicaid will pay them as far back as 3 months. She will have full medicaid coverage until 90 days after the baby is born, and the plan will cover all bills and prescriptions, as well as vision and dental, and even bus vouchers to get to the doctor if she has no car. The baby will be covered for a year and will have the same coverage the mom did.

Hi there. I also had to get medicaid due to the same situation as your friend. It covered my three months of hospital bedrest,my week in recovery, and my twins for a year (including the three months in NICU). The worst part is the clinic. That was God awful!! But without it, it would have been between 600,000 to 1,000,000. $45,000 a day, per child for the incubators for the twins alone!!

If she has any questions, or if you do, e-mail me.

I am currently on medicaid. I have also had medicaid with my 2 other children. It is very helpful, and they give you a list of drs to choose from. I dont knw where you are located so I cant really give you a website, its a state based program so its different for each state...I went to my local Department of Health and Human Services office and applied there. Also getting on WIC is a very good idea for her and for the baby afterwards, cuz formula is REALLY expensive. Also, there is a program for food assistance, that is income based, also you can get more info at the DHHS. There are a lot of program available for assistance, its just a matter of figuring out where they are in your location.

Hi Elaine,
Well you seem to already have alot of great advice but I figured I'll throw in a little more info.
Medicaid does pay for everything during a woman's pregnancy except for the hospital room she will recover in after having the baby.
I beleive they pay for a shared room but not private and we always preferred the private.
They cover the majority of prescriptions but NOT all. I had to pay for all of my pain meds after having the baby because it doesn't cover the pain meds.

She needs to get an application filled out ASAP becuase it does take 4 weeks for everything to be processed before she'll get a card to see the doctor.
She should be able to find an OB GYN at a hospital she'll deliver at. We went to Presby of Dallas where I got my OB care and delivered there and was NOT just a Medicaid Clinic.
I had excellent Prenatal care with both of my pregnancies and was also had prenatal care by Dr N. Light with my second pregnancy and she's great!
Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions I can answer for you.
