Maternity Back Support

I just want to know if anyone has ever used a maternity band or any kind of support that an obstetrician might write a prescription for. My doctor wrote one for me with my first pregnancy and I never filled it--I just hated the idea of wearing anything under my clothes that seemed like it would make me sweatier or less comfortable. I have been having a lot more lower back pain with this pregnancy, mostly concentrated in my right hip, and in spite of using a heating pad in the evenings and soaking in a warm bath, it is becoming very irritating. Has anyone used one and if so what are your thoughts? Was it worth the cost? Did it help? If it helped, did it help just for regular support or did it help with physical activity? (We are in upstate NY so I've got a few more months of snow shovelling and skidding along sidewalks in my boots--not always fun.) I also sit at a desk full-time. I take walks when I can and stand up a lot, but am seriously considering the back support this time.

P.S. I am very careful shovelling snow but still have to be able to get to my car and out the driveway when my husband is not around. He does not like anyone to think I'm shovelling because he won't, only because he is not always home to do it. =)

Find a good chiropractor who adjusts pregnant moms and babies. Made a HUGE difference to me. I even got adjusted IN labor and all of the pain that was in my low back was instantly gone. I've had 3 babies at home without any pain meds, so keeping my pelvis moving and decreasing my pain was a HUGE. One of my babies was even over 10 pounds and no tearing, etc.

Get thee to a chiropractor!
I had one through my second pregnancy, not my first and I can't tell you how much better I felt with regular adjustements and stretching.

I just want to agree with both of the previous posters!

1. Hated the harder, super supportive constricting ones. But the wide elastic velcro belt type support band that I bought at the maternity store was helpful. It just relieved some the the stress and I liked the support.

2. FIND A CHIROPRACTOR! i don't know how I would have made it through either of my pregnancies without him! Both my girls sat very low in my pelvis the whole time, just grinding on my sciatic nerve. But getting an adjustment in my lower back released the pressure and pain immediately.

I wore one of the belly bands and it didn't seem to effect it at all. I did wear the soft one that comes at the maternaty stores that just holds tight. I liked it but the hard ones I hated.
