Managing Morning Sickness Medicine

I am asking on behalf of my daughter (who is too sick to read the computer). She has morning sickness all day and actually has the medicine from the doctor that could/should help manage anti-nausea. The one time she took it, she threw it up. Any suggestions?

Tell her to try sucking on hard candy. I used butterscotch which helped but I've also heard peppermint. I didn't like peppermint so I used the butterscotch. I would even put one in my mouth right after I ate to help keep my food down. That was my first one my second one it didn't help because my sphincter muscle wasn't closing so I had to be on prilosec to help calm the stomach even though I didn't have bad reflex but when i would be digesting food there wasn't anything stopping it from coming back up my esophagus. I also had to eat small meals several times a day. Sometimes it was just saltine crackers and peanut butter. That should also help with the nausea. My doctor had told me that if you go long periods without food to the point of feeling hungry sometimes that contributes to nausea or even vomiting when you are pregnant. Good Luck

Definitely contact the doctor about this. I was put on Zofran when I was pregnant with twins. It helped me function when I was completely incapable of caring for my older child. I know how debilitating pregnancy can be. Ask her doctor if she can prescribe Zofran (the kind that disolves on the tongue). ...it's extremely expensive but there is a generic form out now. If she was given phenegran, it just won't do the trick when you are this sick. If she isn't drinking or eating enough (or losing weight) the doctor WILL prescribe it.

Dear G.,
Have her try alfalfa capsules from the health food store. They will not cause any bad reaction because it is food. Alfalfa has many vitamins and is rich in protein. The capsules will not cause sleepiness or jitteryness as they are not a stimulant. It is also important that she drink plenty of water throughout the day. HTH
Congratulations on the upcoming bundle of joy!

Yes, the same thing happened to me. I was sick day and night. The Dr. prescibed Phenergan antinausea medicine which made me throw up. So then she prescribed Zofran which was a miracle worker! It took my nausea away almost completely. However, the side effects were really bad. I got so constipated I nearly passed out once from straining. The only non-prescription thing that remotely worked for me was unisom (doxylamine succinate). It kept me from throwing up and I got a great nights sleep. The dr. said it was ok to take it. I took it about once per week just to get a break from the sickness because I didn't feel comfortable taking it every day. Unisom combined with vitamin B works even better. I tried that several times too. I was sick for the first 20 weeks of my pregnancy, throwing up every day. The only days I did not throw up were the days I took Zofran, or the days I took unisom and vitamin b. I hope this helps.

Call the Dr and ask for different medicine. She could also try the medicine again, if it's possible that she vomited up the pill before it had time to work.

Zofran can often help, but even with meds there are still times she will still throw up. One of my girlfriends is going through this right now, and her doctor upped her dosage to try and counteract the vomiting. She said it helped, instead of throwing up every two hours (whether her stomach was empty or not) she stretched to four or even six hour periods. Doesn't sound ideal but was definitely better for her.

Tell your daughter to call the doctor rather than waiting for her next appointment. And even though she feels terrible, she needs to eat/drink something to prevent dehydration.

I was sick all day for the first four months. Any meds I took made me extremly tired (not able to function tired). The only thing I learned was that if I started to feel hungry I was going to throw up. So I would eat yogurt, throwup and then have a meal. Drinking milkshakes also helped. The only thing that worked for me regularly was to always have something in my stomach. Yogurt and milkshakes (or milk) were easy because you don't really have to eat (which is sometimes hard).

I was prescribed Diclectin and it worked wonders for me. I work in a law firm and my morning sickness was really "all day" sickness.

My daughter was also sick all day during her pregnancy. Doctor finally found a medicine that gave her a little relief. I think it was Zofran but not 100% sure. It is what is given to cancer patients when they are going through chemo. Didn't completely get rid of the naseau but helped a lot. Your daughter might want to ask her dr. about it. Also a word of encouragement, my daughter did finally get over the sickness and now has a beautiful, healthy baby gir.

MY MS was HORRIBLE, but the meds did not help at all. The things that helped the MOST were cola syrup (a super-concentrated anti-nausea med: buy it at walgreens or other drugstore) over ice and making sure my stomach did not get too empty (one of the reasons it is called morning sickness is because our stomach are the most empty upon waking and with all the hormones present nausea is inevitable on an empty stomach!

You may research HG pregnancies. I had HG and had to eventually be hospitalized. It was horrible. I could only drink water (after getting out of the hospital), suck on ice, and, eat whatever sounded good at the time. I was very sick, the entire pregnancy, but, after getting out of the hospital I was manageable. I took zofran, after other things, and, that was the only thing that helped. I already had two kids, so, it was very hard on me. Many doctors do not take this seriously, so, make sure her doctor is listening to her. Not everyone has regular morning sickness. I was so dehydrated by the time I went in. I had not kept even a drop of water down for 4 days. I feel for her, but, please tell her she will get thru this. My baby was very healthy, despite me feeling like I was dying.

G. S,

I am so sorry to hear she is that sick. One thing would be to try to see if she feels a little bit better at a certain time of day. If she took the medicine in the morning that is not always the best. She can try ginger tea or wrist bands that apply pressure. Maybe a few of these tricks would work and allow her to get the medicine in her. Tell her to hang in there. She will start to feel better later in the pregnancy.
I will be praying for her and her little one.
Take care,
Danabeth

I was on zofran and still threw up @ 8-12 times a day. Nothing helped, but what I learned was that most of the time I was dehydrated and if I got regular IV'S FOR DEHYDRATION i FELT SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER AND THE THROWING UP JUST TOOK A MOMENT (i COULD EVEN PULL OVER AND THROW UP IN THE CAR AND THEN KEEP DRIVING). i WOULD GET THEM AT MY DR'S TWICE A WEEK (OR SOMETIMES URGENT CARE ). The good news is it won't last more than 9 mths.

When I was pregnant with my first child, I was nauseated and vomiting 24/7. We came to discover that the iron in the prenatal vitamins were causing it. The doctor had me stop taking prenatal vitamins and eat Flinstone chewables instead, after a meal. I was surprised to find out it was the iron because I've always taken a multivitamin with iron without nausea or vomiting. You may want to have your daughter stop taking the prenatal vitamins for a few days to see what happens.

There should be various medications the doctor can prescribe for your daughter. I believe the strongest one is Zofran. It is used normally for cancer patients going through chemo/radiation. I know it is available as a pill that dissolves on the tongue. If that is not what the doctor gave her, maybe she can ask about it.
Tell her not to wait for her next appointment to get it. They are so far apart during the beginning of the pregnancy. Call in and see if they can either prescribe something better/stronger or if they have to see her, hopefully there is a time of day that she doesn't feel quite as nauseous.
Tell her to hang in there! I can sympathize. I had morning sickness (that lasted all day) with both my pregnancies that lasted 4 months each. I lost 15 pounds with my first child & 11 with my second.
If she can't hold down even fluids, she may have to be admitted for an IV so she can stay hydrated. I hope she isn't as bad as that.
Good Luck!

(Just read the previous poster's comment about Zofran making her constipated. I too was constipated - pretty much throughout both pregnancies, but I don't know that it was caused by the Zofran. Constipation is a lot of the times caused by the baby taking every last bit of nutrition it can from your body. There may be something she can take for constipation if she has it. My doctor had me take Milk of Magnesia for my second pregnancy (stool softener did absolutely nothing to help), but I'm not sure if you have to be a certain number of weeks along for it to be safe or not.)

If she was prescribed zofran in pill form, she should ask for the sub-lingual. If she is unable to keep any liquids down for 24 hours, she should call the doctor and let them know. She could be dehydrated which will make the nausea worse and essentially eliminate the benefits of the medication. If she is severe enough she may be diagnosed with Hyperemesis Gravidarum. If she is, I recommend she visit www.hyperemesis.org. There are support groups forums that connect women who suffer and know all the ins and outs of medication, etc. Also, zofran is very constipating. I found Miralax worked best, since I was unable to keep most laxatives down. Good luck!

Motion-sickness bands. They're wristbands with little knobs that hit the right pressure point on your wrist. Supposed to be for travel, but I used them just fine for morning sickness. Sour candies helped a bit, too. For me, peppermint made things worse, and so did Preggie Pops.

If she is that sick, I don't know if this will help, but green mint tea is very good for settling the stomach. It worked with my pregnancy with my daughter, but not my son.

I will be thinking of her and wishing her the best!

BTW, does her doctor have a suppository anti-nausea medicine she could take??? I know that sounds gross, but if she is that sick it might be the only way she can get the medicine into her system.

My mom & husband were very concerned too.

My doctor started me on phenegren, it knocked me out and wasn't a miracle worker. With my first pg I would 1/4 the pills and take them every 2 hours (instead of 1 every 4) to try to help cut the sleepiness & nausea. I could function, but would still get sick. Chewing gum, hard candies, goldfish crackers, sprite & gingerale temporarily helped.

With our second pg I started on phenegren again, but the 1/4 pill did nothing. Taking a full pill I couldn't function, and even when I moved I would still get sick. Dr switched me to zofran which helped - if I could keep it down. She switched me to the dissovable pill - its NASTY under the tongue, and worked miracles - for a week. My sickness kept getting worse. I was losing weight and couldn't care for our 18 month old without vomitting - often. My mom brought home every ginger product she could find - chews, hard candies, syrup to make tea, etc... I also put the motion sickness bands on both wrists. I was still so ill. I ended up in the hospital for an afternoon for fluids - dehydration makes nausea even worse. After the fluids I felt better, but we didn't take any chances. From that afternoon on my mom took our toddler, and my husband set up a schedule to get me food, drink & medication. I spent the next several weeks on phenegren and as unconscious/still as possible. Thankfully after 12 weeks I felt human again. The first pg I was sick till 18 weeks, so we were worried. My girls are 3 & 1/2 and 18 months now - both healthy.

A friend of mine that delivered twins would have her husband wake her up to eat some crackers, she'd doze again and then when she had to get up her stomach tolerated it better. She also took frequent naps (lunch time, after work).

Also I discovered in an unrelated hospital trip that zofran dissovable could come in a minty flavor - not great, but better than the original I took.

My only suggestion would be, if she is taking pre-natal vitamins, stop taking them and see if it helps with the nausea......if it does discuss with the OB not taking them, I couldn't take them when I was pregnant, the OB checked my blood work more often, but basically I ate a well balanced diet and baby and I did fine without them. I did have morning sickness the entire pregnancy, everyday, we laughed that I had any-time of day sickness, not morning sickness, weighed 12 pounds less when he was born, than at my 1st visit, that is the upside, and he weighed in at nearly 10 pounds, so he was a pretty healthy guy at birth.

God Bless
