Mammogram Question... - Dayton,OH

Ok, so I had a mammogram on Saturday & I'm not going to lie, it hurt! Not that previous ones were totally pain-free, but this one hurt more than I remember any other one. Yesterday my left breast & left chest area felt weird, like a pressure and tender if that makes any sense. Then today, I wake up and OMG the left area itched so bad & somehow I was able to make it through my work day. I just changed clothes and my left breast has some sort of skin irritation, 3 nickle to quarter size bright red areas that actually feel and look like burns. This can't be normal.

I called the place that did my mammogram & they act like I must have been bitten by something, or possibly an allergy to the detergent that they use to clean the gowns. They said I could come in tomorrow & they would have the dr. look at it free of charge. Which if it's like this tomorrow I definitely will.

So I guess my question is...have any of you experienced anything like this after a mammogram?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well..just found out that I have shingles...and that is the cause for all the itching & severe pain & it had nothing to do with the mammogram! I thought shingles was something only old people got!!!

I did not experience what you are talking about.

My last mammo was the one from hell. I thought my ribs were cracked, I could not move. I complained and they acted like it was nothing then charged $500 to do a scan and it was not cracked but there was heavy bruising inside. It took about 6 weeks before I felt normal again.

Oh and I bitched about them charging me when I wouldn't have been there if it weren't for their error. They relented.

Sounds like you may have an allergy to sonething they cleaned the machine with. Don't back down and don't let them charge you.

I read time ago that since mammogram involves radio active rays it may cause some skin reactions to people with more sensitive skin.
Check for these symptoms also (which are not caused because of sensitivity):
Skin over the breast becomes pink, red or darkened with rash-like symptoms
Skin over breast thickens, sometimes with a fine dimpling with texture similar to the skin of an orange (called peau d'orange)
Breast is noticeably warm to the touch
Breast pain or tenderness (which can range from a constant ache to stabbing pains)
Swelling, usually sudden, sometimes a cup size in a few days
Itching
Nipple retraction or discharge
Change in color and texture of the areola
See your doctor anyway to be sure. I hope this helps!

Not like that, but one time, the pressure/squeezing did leave a bruise! I weighed less then than I do now, so I don't know why I got a bruise....

That did affect me for quite a while.... it was several years before I had another mammogram! (Yes, I've had them lately.... June 2011 and just in January and February of this year.... I had to go back for another diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound, but fortunately, everything was clear then.)

It may be the radiation and you ar just super sensitive or it could be whatever they clean the machine down with. I always just experience blotchy, itchy skin right after but it goes away by the time I get home and soreness for 1 or 2 days. If what you are experiencing is in a pattern, perhaps it was something on the machine or the pattern the radiation hit that breast. Hope you feel better.

Sounds familiar. Before I have my mammogram, the mammo tech puts these adhesive circle things with a silver middle on my nipples. I don't know what the medical term for those things are, but after the mammo, they have to be removed and it is painful. I've had itchiness and rashes from those things even after a few days. Could that be what is causing this for you too?

Hmmm.. had one today. Haven't noticed a thing. Never have had any issues. I guess we'll see if there is anything different tomorrow, but I doubt there will be. I just wasn't painful for me. Uncomfortable, yes, but not painful.
