Mamapedia - This Website Vs. Mamapedia - the Facebook Page

Members: are you aware that the content we post on this website is also used on Mamapedia's Facebook page?
(okay, so that's my official question.)

For those of us preferring anonymity, this creates an issue. While I stand by my own words, I do not post my full name here on this forum. It is my choice for privacy.

So, my next question would be: can anyone point me in the right direction? I want to read, on this website, that I have given permission for my words to be used elsewhere. I want to read that my authorization has been given for my contact info to be shared/accessed elsewhere. In other words, can someone please show me how I "gave myself away"? :)

(sigh) How did I miss this? & really, I know that anything I put online can be copied/pasted/stolen/altered....it just hits me wrong. I enjoy Mamapedia. I've been on here for years, before the merger. I'm just feeling a little violated today.

TIA :)

So What Happened?

Thanks! I knew it was legal. I knew it was posted somewhere on the website. & I knew someone could point me in the right direction!

Now, it's up to me to decide how I want to personally handle this issue. & additionally, I log into this website on my home computer only. I never use my phone for it. I keep many, many things separate!

Thanks, again!

EDIT #2: Mamapedia has posted an apology on FB for the error on Cat's post. :)

Oh my gosh! If I had known that my posts would be highlighted else where, especially facebook, I would've been more careful of using certain names, examples and situations that I used when trying to relate or comfort another mom.

Grrrr. NOT HAPPY!!!

I don't post anything here that I wouldn't want my kids to read or would be embarrassed if my mother read it.

What they did with Cat's post really bothered me. To exploit her like that in her time of grief is VERY disheartening. I truly hope that they remove the post from the MMP Facebook page.

Hope that helps. It sucks they did that.

This is so disappointing. I bet MP lost a ton of people. I changed my name and location about a year ago out of concern someone could somehow trace my answers. I am so glad I did.

What the hell!! I just checked it out. How offensive that they took Cat's post and then didn't really read it or care!!

SH what they are doing is say you posted a question here. They link it over there. So you know how Cat lost Peter last week, the posted a link but apparently didn't bother to read it or know Cat so they said she lost her son not her fiancee! It is disgusting!

I know anyone can link to the questions but if it is the people who run this site they should tell us they were doing it.

It doesn't matter if you have your FB linked here or not. I have both. But I purposefully NEVER linked them.

And I fully understand that they may be within their legal rights to do what they are doing. But, like many, mannnnny other things, just because you have the legal right to do something, doesn't mean that you should do it. It is distasteful to me.

There are reasons I do not use FB to log into most other sites.

ETA: I would love it if they posted this on FB, but I doubt they will. "Moms don't want their questions turned into bland snippets and reposted on FB. Weigh in here...." :P

I've gotta say that this bugs me and I will definitely be even more careful with what I ask and answer. I really, really don't need someone in real life recognizing my profile from an answer I give or question I ask, especially about things that are delicate in nature or involve my blended family.

And that they dared to link to a sensitive post by one of our most beloved members - and GOT IT WRONG - is just offensive and appalling.

It looks like it's a new thing for them to link to our questions. I went back quite a bit and mostly the links are to those blogs on the home page.
We should all go over there and get mad that they were so stupid as to not read the actual link they were posting (Peter being her Significan Other and NOT her son) Dumb Dumbs.

For the first time since I joined the site, I just read the terms & conditions (link in the lower right hand corner of your screen). Here's the applicable section: :(

I've never logged onto mamapedia through facebook.
If they are snitching my posts, I won't delete facebook, I'll delete mamapedia.
I do have a facebook account, but I use it only to keep in touch with distant family. I never post anything too personal.

I'll have to check it out.
I can live without mamapedia.

I didn't know this until today. At the very least, they could post the question or theme of a post, but not post our answers to them. Just let the FB members answer or respond to it. This is just awful.

This might finally prompt me to have my Facebook acct deleted.
I don't use it except to lurk anyway.
So how exactly do they link one acct to the other if you do not log on here via Facebook or use the Facebook Connect link in your Mamapedia profile.
Do they use a common email addr?
If that's the case, I'm creating some new email addr's so none are in common between accounts (and creating some new accts with nothing in common between them).

For the most part I don't care if my content entered here is copied there.
What I DO care about GREATLY is that I can be anonymous here and my post might appear with my actual name in FB.
Not cool AT ALL.

It's one thing it you WANT to connect all the facets of your digital life.
It's something else if they are connecting up behind your back.
Facebook has it's fingers in too many pies.
Mentally I picture it as a mythical hydra where if you cut off one head several more grow back in it's place.

You are still anonymous over there. If this post was shared on FB, for example, you would still just be "S. H." Also, haven't you ever noticed the little "share on Facebook" tab which pops up with every response to a question, near the "send a flower" option? Anyone on THIS site can share anything you say here on Facebook with one click.
Mamapedia is a business, and most businesses these days have a Facebook page promoting that business.

I choose not to have a Facebook account. Therefore, I don't want to post on there. Simple enough correlation. I suppose I can't say I am surprised what is here can be there. However, it doesn't thrill me. As for what happened to Cat, shame on Mamapedia. In my opinion it is the perfect example of why the cross posting isn't appropriate or necessary - meaning, intent, content, truth gets lost in translation. Besides doesn't it seem self evident if I wanted to post on Facebook, I would post there myself and conversely if I don't want it there, I won't post there? Digital dots can be connected BUT to me that is akin to snooping through someone's phone/diary/personal matters. Be careful what you find. It violates the basic gentleman's agreement about privacy.

Well, S., I always knew there was an 'alternate dimension' of MP out there somewhere since FB came along. I really dislike the fact that there's no way for me to post comments on featured posts, maybe because I'm not on Facebook. (There's always an option to sign in with Google, Yahoo, etc. but they still never post.).

I took a look at the FB page-- funny, they actually linked to a recent question of mine. I think you have to expect that if it's on the internet, it's pretty much up for grabs. "Anonymous" is only good on paper these days.

ETA: Jo-- sad that they couldn't be bothered to read Cat's post and label it correctly. I think that's one problem with our fascination with just posting sh*t all the time, for the sake of posting-- forgetting to read for content and context. The blurbs are certainly an oversimplification....

So you have Facebook?
How do you log into, Mamapedia?
Via the Facebook icon, or just the "login" screen?

You should contact MamaPedia support, and ask them.

I never log into MamaPedia, via the Facebook screen.

What does their terms of use say?

I never knew this! I log in this site via their regular login, not with facebook. I totally agree with you, S. H. I wish to remain anonymous here too because when I'm on facebook, the only people I am friends with are friends and family that I actually know. Here on mamapedia, we are all strangers, but like you, I stand by the words I write.

I have never given Mamapedia any accurate information about me. They don't have my real name or real location. It's all fake and I change my location periodically as well. I've always assumed anything posted here was public domain, as with anything posted online.

I think we are all smart enough to know that MMP "can" do this (legally). I think we are all smart enough to know that any time we post something on the internet, it's out there. However, just because they can do something doesn't mean that they should. I'm miffed about it. I've been a member of this site for a long time. I changed my name & profile pic today, and I doubt I'll be posting regularly any more.

Honestly, you have to be careful even if they dont post to fb. I posted a question about some problems I was having with my husband. At that time I was using my first name only on here. A wife of one of my husbands coworkers read my post, told her husband, who of course told my husband, and by that time the story was I was taking the kids and leaving him, which was not true and not what I posted. I now use a screen name on here, and I dont 'like' the page on Facebook to be sure to keep them separate.
