Major Poop Explosions

Dear Moms,

Please help me. My daughter usually has daily bowl movements, however when she skips a day or two she ends up pooping a ton more than usual. When this happens, I change her immediately and when I lay her down the poop slides up out of her diaper and onto her back and sides everytime. The other day we were out having lunch and this happened at a restaurant. We rushed her to the restroom immediately and it was already too late. What do you do to prevent the poop from coming out of the top of the diaper? She is almost 5 months and wearing a size 2 diaper. She is a tiny baby, only 5 lbs at birth and now I think she is 13-15 pounds, so maybe a bigger diaper would be a solution? Size 2 seems quite comfy on her. I am currently using Luvs, but I never stick to the same diaper brand because they all have seemed to fail me at some point, even Pampers. Regardless of brand, the poop spills out of the top. What do you think? Thank you so much!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ladies,

Thank you so much for all the advice and feedback. So far I have tried putting wipes on her back before laying her down to change her and that has caught the extra mess. I also made a call to my pediatrician because I noticed about 2 weeks after starting the baby on solids this happened. I found out I introduced green veggies too soon. I should have started with yellow/orange veggies but instead I started with green, therefore a laxative effect was taking place here. So far the poo is less watery and has not been spilling so much. Still, I will continue to refer back to everyone's advice if I continue having this issue. Thanks a million and take care.

wow, i guess it happends to all of us... mine used to poop all over the place, and it mostly happend in a car seat, where i had to take it out, take it appart and wash it... almost once a week... ehhh... but i bigger size should do the trick... i personally used pampers, and was very sad to switch to cruisers after swadlers, (got spoiled with the softness... )but they seem to get the job done... and i found that the size on the box dont really matter, the LB's ar off, mine was a big kid, so he's always been in bigger diapers then what it said on the box...
also, soon she'll eat solids, and you can give her rice to constipate her a little, so may be she'll take 2, 3 little poops instead of one big one... Good luck

This is just a part of being a parent. Luvs are not a good choice, try pampers, and not just pampers, pampers swaddlers. They go much higher up the back so there is more barrier. But otherwise just smile and laugh, because this is one of the least serious dilemas you will have to worry about in the next few years.

And always remember to pack extra clothes!

I had the exact same problem. Every single time my daughter would poop it would ruin whatever she was wearing. I have learned to hold her in an upright position while unbuttoning her clothes. I then put 2 wipes down the back of her diaper so when I lay her down the wipe catches her poop vs. going onto her clothes. It works everytime.

Good luck,

Hi there, we have had the same problem and realized that our little girl was reacting to dairy that I was eating (she's breast fed). Once I cut out the diary her poops were much less explosive and less messy. Might be something to consider... Hope your diaper changes are going more smoothly!

A size 3 diaper might help. And I recommend Huggies. Pampers Swaddlers are also really good, but they are more expensive. If you have a Costco membership, I believe that is the cheapest place to get Huggies. I have been using them for over 3 years (with my 2 little ones) and my only complaint is that occassionally one of the side "tapes" will come right off when you pull it out to strap on the diaper, so that's 16 cents down the drain, but that has happened maybe 6-10 times in 3 years (and we're talking thousands of diapers!). They have always contained my babies' bowel movements, with only a few exceptions when there was some very slight spilling out the top or side. But this is just part of the diaper days. If the bigger size or a different brand don't help, hang in there. As they say, this too shall pass (no pun intended).

The next size diaper up always helped for me, even if she's not the size for that diaper. Also, little plastic pants with elastic over the diaper should help from the poop coming out. Plus, in a few months her poop should be more solid, and won't spill out. It gets more solid the older they get, especially once breastfeeding is over.

I had the same problem with both of my boys. Unfortunately, sometimes there's nothing you can do....it's gonna happen no matter what precautions you take. However, going up a size in diapers did help a lot. I, also, tried all different kinds of diapers and I found that Huggies work the best. Hope this helps and good luck!

I know all about blow outs, my twins were masters at them and then my new little guy was just the same. You are so right, no diaper works. They ALL leak! I have tried them all, even the gdiaper and cloth with wraps and elastic pants. Huggies does have that back little elastic thingy (in the small of their back), that can sometimes catch it. But you have to remember to kinda pull it out a bit and even then, it doesnt always help. Also, I found huggies leaked pee with my side sleeping babies. Anyway... Maybe a bigger diaper will help because a bigger diaper will go further up her back. Really, and sadly, the only thing that works is solid food. I waited to feed my new little guy baby food until he was almost 8 mos. and therefore I had to endure blow outs for 8 + months!!! And you know if you call the number on the package of diapers and complain, they will send you a coupon for a free pack. Anything helps! Good luck.

Hello,
We had that problem as well. We tried different diapers and went up sizes. When our daughter was born Huggies were the best. Then they stopped working so we went to Pampers Swaddlers. These worked the best for the longest amount of time for her. Then we went to Pampers Extra Dry (the Cruisers did not work). But when she was at about 1 1/2 they stopped working so we went back to Huggies and they worked until she was potty trained. However, my sister-in-law had exactly the opposite thing happen. She loved Pampers Cruisers and the Extra Dry did not work for her children. Her children stayed in Cruisers the longest amount of time.

My suggestion is to buy small packages of diapers and try them out. If you go to a bigger size just make sure they fix right around the legs. Or if you have friends with a child about the same age borrow a couple of their diapers and try them out. That is how my sister-in-law found out the Extra Dry did not work for her.

Hope that helps,
K.

For us the poop explosion has always been a surefire sign to step up to the next size. Even if it seems too big, just cinch it up and you'll have more diaper for maximum containment. Good luck!

You are sooooo not alone. I used those plastic pants that have the elastic around the legs and waist. Those were used when the cloth diapers were big. When I had my kids my daughter had those episodes and I started putting those plastic pants on her. It's not any cleaner, but it definitely kept those explosions in her pants and not up the back side. I hope this helps?

Hi Gina,

What you're going through is very familiar to me. I do not know how to prevent it, however. Most diapers do not seem to be able to withold/hold it when it gets that big. I really don't think a bigger diaper would help. I use huggies. My 7 month old is around 16 lbs and uses size 2. (Each brand seems to have several versions and they each have their own sizing chart.)

What I can tell you is that when the baby begins to eat more solids, her poopies will be less runny. Meanwhile, I recommend you carry thick paper towels with you so that when you go to change her, you can place them between your baby's clothes and diaper as a "catchall" when you lie her down. This should help to keep her clothes from getting solied if caught early.

Good luck to you.

All the advice I have on that has said that the poopsplosions mean up the diaper size. My daughter is 2 mnths and 10 1/2 lbs and wearing the Pampers size 2. The size 1 were leaving me in the poopsplosion situation even though she was still in weight range for the size.

Hi Gina!
Bigger diapers are not necessarily the right solution, but a snug/not tight fit is the best. Many diapers have that second little elastic around the legs to help with such incidents. Tucking the diaper in on their back, folding it inward can help keep some of it in. That said, with your baby's sitting position, there is really only one place for that poop to go: up the back!

As a former daycare provider, I have seen my share and variety of poops! Color, size, density, consistency, and smell should be pretty predictable at this age if there are no other changes in your baby's lifestyle. Every baby and toddler has their signature poop! and when there are changes in that signature, there is usually a good reason!

My concern is it sounds pretty mooshy...this is not necessarily a sign of a healthy poop. Also, be aware of how the poop smells...if you have not changed her diet recently, and if the poop smells different, pungent, it could be she is not digesting properly and has an enzyme inbalance. Her poop should never be liquidy, even if she is breastfed.

If you are breastfeeding, have you changed your diet? Is she more gassy than usual?

Stay away from any juices or sugary (even watered down) drinks when her poops are explosive. (actually most juices are not dietarily necessary at this age anyway, and should only be used if your baby is constipated) Always better to give water if you feel your baby is dehydrated in any way. But don't use bottles for soothing or entertainment to keep her quiet. If she's on formula bottles, she shouldn't be dehydrated anyways.

Is she on formula only? have you changed formulas recently? I'm guessing she is at least on cereal by now? Do these incidents happen after eating a particular food or type of vegetable or fruit if you have her on solids?
Not all children can digest certain foods, and this can create an inbalance in digestive enzymes which can be corrected quickly with the proper diet. Your pediatrician can do a fecal test to see if there is anything to be concerned about and give you tips on how to correct her diet and restabilize her.

Been there done that,
In friendship and support,
V.

My son had lots of "blowout" diapers when he was a baby. I couldn't use a bigger diaper with him because he was a small, thin baby. He started to outgrow blowing out of his diaper after starting solid foods and his poop got more, well, solid. He was breastfed exclusively for the first 6 months, which resulted in looser bowel movements, then he started on solids. Like you, we went through all of the brands of diapers until we found the combo that worked for us. Stay with the size that seems most comfortable. A bigger diaper is looser, which means more "blowout potential."

My first son did not have this problem, but my second does!! No diaper seems to make a difference. He tends to pass gas very loudly, so I think it is the force of the gas that propels the poop up and out the top and sides of the diaper. I hear that in exclusively breast fed babies, the major poop explosions are pretty common and there is nothing one can do except bring an extra outfit, a few diapers and lots of wipes where ever you go!

Believe it or not but the poop explosion stories will be considered funny one day. My daughter had an explosion at Target once. It was so messy I just decided to take her home to take care of it. I never found any good solutions to the explosions other than have a good fabric cleaner, plenty of wipes, and be willing to possibly throw away poop stained clothes. Best of luck congrats about having a healthy little girl!

I think a bigger diaper would solve it. That was happening with my first daughter, and it took me a while to try a bigger size because she was below the "minimum" pounds listed on the bigger size box. But now, with my second daughter, whenever we have "blowouts" more than a few times, we just size up no matter what the box says and the problem stops.

Gina,

Try going up a size. Usually when you start having diaper leaks, it is usually a sign that you need a bigger diaper even if you aren't at the weight limit. Also, I always had the best luck with the regular huggies (not the supreme). The elastic waist helps contain anything flowing upward. Pampers cruisers also have the stretchy top now and I think those are okay but I hate the smell of them one they are peed on. Gross.

Hi Gina:

We had that problem with both of our kids. It seemed especially bad while I was breastfeeding. We use Luvs too and have found those are the best diapers overall, just as an aside. The only thing that seemed to work was when I could tell the little bean was having a movement and I would press my hand against the back of his/her back to hold the diaper tight. Like I said, it only worked if they were accessible enough at the moment. Then when laying them down, I would slide the new diaper way up the back before reclining them to catch any escaping poop. The good news is that this doesn't go on for very long, once they start getting more solids. Hope that helped!

Quite honestly I believe this to be a normal part of baby pooping regime. They don't poop one day, they poop twice as much the next day, just like you and me.

My munchkin does the exact same thing, except he is 20lbs+ and a few days short of 5 months. The diapers may help a bit but not in the end. Just get comfortable with doing lots of laundry. Once you rest easy in that, it becomes a bit more easy.

I took several trips when my son was born (on an airplane). When it was time to return, I decided not to buy the most expensive brand, though I love love love Swaddlers by Pampers. I have four children and after Swaddlers, Pampers are horrbile- as far as I'm concerned. Luvs- wayyyyy to thin. Anyway, I decided to try the Target brand and voila. I was sooo concerned about my baby's bottom, but once I tried these, I couldn't go back to anything else. Not only are they well pasked with absorbent filler, but they are much cheaper. My children have not had the same rashes as with the other brands and I don't mind changing them after a little "t" or "boo". Anyway, give it a shot. It has worked for me now for my last two. Like I said though, I ALWAYS use the Swaddlers on my babies and after they hit eight months to a year, I switch to Target. They have worked well for this problem! Also make sure you pull the front and back equally up on the baby, but I really think LUVS are way too thin. I have a pack for 6 months now and my husband is finally making me use them.

I began having the same problem when my daughter turned about 9 months. She wore pampers swaddlers but I switched her over to Luvs at that time. They have worked great ever since. Try getting a bigger size, or just the size that fits a little bigger than snug, make sure the back part of the diaper is comfortably covering her back, and midback. For the front part, fold it down outwards and make sure to apply the tape portion so that it holds the folded part and part of the diaper itself. Just don't get too big of a diaper. Remember, just a little bigger than the size she is wearing now. If you want to stick to Luvs then that's great. My daughter is now 16 months and stayed on Luvs. I am just now switching to a size 5 because although the 4 still fits good, she had an accident. I tried the 5's and it worked again. Good Luck. Make sure you tape the diaper snuggly around the waiste, but not uncomfortably tight : ) Good Luck. By the way, my daughter weighed 5"2 oz when she was born but grew so quickly and is so tall now you would not have known she was a little peanut when she was born!

As we say around here "POOP HAPPENS" my daughter is close to the same age, weight and size. She was 4 lbs when we brought here home. Now we are in a size 3 diaper for Dra not quiet as snug as the 2 but seems to hold better and be more comfy on her with not much but a fewer accidents like you mentioned. We use the "kirkland" brand diapers from Cosco and they do us well but messes happen especially when we dont want them and really the only thing you can do is be prepared. It does pass but be aware as we start introducing new foods and such into our lo's diet episodes may pop up again as their little bodies adjust. Also teething may affect the poop.

Best of luck to you hun just know as frustrating as it is this to does pass and if were lucky we get a funny story or two to embarass our children with later in life. =)

Hi Gina -

I used to have that happen - quite a lot - and I didn't learn until after it stopped happening that I was most likely putting my baby's diapers on too tightly. I had the believe that they needed to be nice and snug so there wouldn't be leaks, but as a friend pointed out, "well, it has to go SOMEWHERE" (lacking italics, I used caps for emphasis).

So perhaps that's the problem. I used Pampers most of the time, don't recall trying Luvs (couldn't find them), I often used that cheap brand at Target, and I also would sometimes buy those natural ones they sell at Whole Foods. I don't think it makes any difference if you always put them on the same way.

We also had some explosions in restaurants -- one time my husband took her to change her & clean her up and came back shirtless & the baby wearing his shirt! Fortunately, we were about to leave. Just had to share a laugh...

Happy diapering!

My fourth son had that problem. I always used regular Huggies with my other kids, but they just didn't do the trick with #4. We tried about every kind of diaper made, went with Drypers for a while and thought that was as good as it would get, then one day a friend suggested we try Huggies Snug and Dry and they worked like magic! Made me wish we'd tried the other types of Huggies to start with. Explosions will always happen, but they happened a lot less for us with Huggies Snug and Dry. Make sure you use a big enough size.

Gina,

I have a 6 week old, but I use cloth diapers and have not yet had an explosion problem. (He generally does a major poop only about once a day...but still no leaks.) I use prefolds, a Snappi, and Thirsties diaper covers. If the cloth diaper doesn't soak up all the mess, then the cover prevents it from getting all over the place and his clothes. If you are not into trying cloth, I might recommend trying some of the cute cloth diaper covers to protect your baby's clothes (and yours - I did have explosions with my first baby who was in disposables, and once had baby poop all over my jeans in the middle of a meeting!) Good luck!

Regardless of brand, the poop will spill out the top of any diaper depending on the position and weight of the child when she has the bowel movement, the size and composition of the stool and of course, the size of the diaper. Diapers aren't perfect, and we just have to live with them the way they are. I wouldn't go with Luvs, personally. They don't have much elasticity to help in containing leaks, and the materials of the diaper don't do much for pulling wetness away from the baby's skin.
You could try plastic diaper covers (that people normally use with cloth diapers) to help contain stool that is getting all over the place. Just put it on over her regular disposable diaper and bring an extra outfit with you just in case. Examine what you are eating for the few days before she has an "overflow" and maybe you'll be able to see a pattern developing as what you eat will affect her stool too. Too many apples, not enough grain? As she gets older, especially when she starts on solids, you won't have as many accidents.

Gina, I have been there with both my boys! My husband and I used to affectionally call it the 'AOP' (Avalanche Of Poop) situation. i can laugh about it now but I do remember how frustrating (and downright gross!) it was. Sorry, but I don't remember how long it lasted (my kids have been out of diapers for a few yrs now) but I would think that when they start eating solids then the poop starts to firm up and it's not as much of a problem. I do seem to recall that using a larger sized diaper did help but like someone else said, just make sure that the legs are tight (otherwise you'll have it coming out there instead of out the top). One other thing you might not know is that, if you use excessive amounts of vaseline or bum cream on their butt, this can affect the absorbtivity of the diaper too (b/c it coats the surface with a water-repellant 'goo' that interferes with soaking up the pee/poop). This was more of a problem with us for urine containment rather than poop but I just wanted to mention it for consideration. (we were using vaseline to protect their bottoms from getting rashes, and it worked great, but it defintely affected the ability of the diaper to absorb fluids). I hope this helps, good luck and hang in there! I know its totally gross though! ;-) -Suzanne

Poop explosions are totally normal, and you really can't get a diaper big enough to contain them. I've had the same clean up experiences with both my daughters....in restaurants, at the zoo etc. My oldest went without pooping for 4 days when we were on a trip. I was very anxious and talked to a pharmacist who told me to be patient, it would come. And boy did it...in the middle of dinner. The best thing you can do is be prepared with lots of wipes and extra clothing. Next thing you know, you'll be giving this advice to another new mom and re-living your old poop stories with a chuckle.

My son is exclusively breast fed and only has a bowel movement once a week. When he does they are MAJOR! We use the Nature BabyCare diapers from Target and we have NEVER had a leak! I would recommend these and definitely put her in the next size up (you can fold over the top if you like). These are wonderful diapers both for your baby and for the environment. There are no chemicals to harm baby and they are biodegradable. The major plus??? They are less then $10.00 for 30-40 (depending on the size you get)!!!! Give them a try! Good luck... by the way, my pediatrician told me that once you start adding solids to their diets the poops get a little more firm so not as explosive!!!

Hi Gina,

It's been awhile since my son was in diapers, but I breatfed him and he would do the same thing. The only diaper that worked for me was Huggies. All the other brands were useless. As I said, it's been awhile, 18 years to be exact, so they may have changed the Huggies shape since that time.

Hope you find something that works.

Just bring a change of clothing wherever you go. If it's still the mustard yellow and runny it just runs right up the back every time. I remember this with both kids and even if I tried to grab them when they were pooping there was no stopping this stuff.

My sister's daughter did this when she was a baby too, and I think she just grew out of it. To me, it just sounds like a healthy growing baby with healthy bowels! Are you breastfeeding her... my sister was and I know she just produced a ton of milk so maybe that's it? I know that it is annoying, but I would say just try to "hang on" and be thankful that she's growing so well! Sorry no advice on the mess issue, though. I have confidence that you will get creative on how to control the messes soon enough! :)
