Lying - Wallingford,CT

Lying should not be an acceptable behaviour at any age. All kids try to lie, at least once, but if it's caught and disciplined properly it shouldn't happen continually.
Kids typically lie if they don't want you to know something or are trying to hide something. If they are lying for things they wouldn't get into trouble for in the first place, my first thought would be that the child has developed a bad habit. It's a habit that needs to be broken. Perpetual lying is not a good thing and the child needs to understand that.

Yes and Yes. I could ask my niece what day it is and she'll will say Wednesday even though she knows it is Tuesday. Partly cuz she is just not listening to the question to begin with - Partly because she likes to be in control of something - Partly to check to see if I will catch her in the lie - Partly because the older they get...The more the start to live just a bit in their own little teen world where the sky is purple and parents don't need to be told anything.

Frustrating...We have drilled into our younger boys heads: "It is always always always better to tell the truth. Because if you get caught (and you WILL get caught)...Things are gonna be a lot worse." We hope this averts "bad" lying once they become teens but ...Well, here's to wishful thinking.
