Hi Mamas! Well my son is finally stopped nursing! I am happy and sad, but he does cuddle me now which is nice. He will actually sit for a few minutes with me instaed of nursing and hopping down the second he is done! My question is about me. My breast (only one since he quite using the other one a while ago) was very engorged and sore, but it has gotton better. It is still a little sore and full feeling. I have been taking tylenol, massaging it, squeezing a little milk out, and using cabbage leaves. It feels really lumpy, I guess where the milk ducts are kinda blocked. I was just wondering if this was normal and how long it will be this way. Everyday it is less sore and a little less swollen looking. I don't think there is any sign of infection since it doesn't hurt as much and I am not getting sick. Does it take a while for the size to get back to normal. My other one seemed to go back fast. At least i get new bras soon! Thank you so much!

What can I do next?

I had a similar problem when I stopped nursing, and my lactation consultant advised me to pump to completely empty both breasts, and that did the trick. No more problems after that. It's been over a year since that time, but I think I remember that she said it may be necessary to use warm compresses and massage prior to pumping to loosen the clogged ducts in order to completely empty the breasts.

If you call one of the breastfeeding shops at the Harris hospitals, they could likely offer more advice.

I had this happen both times i quit nursing and both times I pumped one last time and after that it never got engorged or lumpy again. It's like it needs to just be emptied out.

You need to go get a Mammogram. I don't mean to alarm you but rule out something worse than milk ducts. Call your OB/GYN.

I think it took about 6-8 weeks for my lumps to go away. My dr said if they last longer than that, go see her.

I weaned my 2 yo daughter a week and a half ago and had the same issues! It took about a week to clear up for me, I just kept massaging & expressing a tiny bit in a warm shower. I am pregnant, so it may have cleared up faster for me because of that.

Oh and on the size issue (SAME thing here with her favoring one so one felt fine. pft) mine are almost the same now.

Hi T. - I stopped BFing a few weeks back and the first few days were pretty painful, I ended up pumping once a day and slowly (after 3-4 days) stopped. My breasts were engorged for a few days and very uncomfortable. A friend of mine advised me to pump one last time (not completely but enough to where the lumps were down, 2-3 ounces on both sides) and to my surprise, they didn't fill back up. Hope this helps.
