I got my routine eye exam done earlier this year ..I think I was not usual above average smart self that day when I chose Not to get a contact lens fitting..(because last year I had Terrible experience with contact lenses and I just decided to go with glasses) anywho...I realized soon enough that I should ve atleast gotten a prescription so I could have ordered contact lenses if I were to change my mind.
Now, my insurance only pays for one exam per year..so thats out..everywhere I look they are charging atleast $70 for just contact lense exam...and I have my regular glasses prescription..does anyone know where I can find a good deal???
any tips would be appreciated.
thanks much
S..

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank You all for your replies. So, even though my prescription is less than a year old I mentioned that I Did Not get the contact lens prescription which is different than specs and apparently I could 've gotten it within 3 months at the same rate that they would have charged me if I were to get it at the time to eye exam. But now they were charging me full fee. I called sooo many places, asked about promotions, coupons..and the cheapest that I have found (well not cheap really but a deal) is at America's Best. They have this plan for $99 that covers 2 eye exams per year for 3 years. They also have contact lenses for real cheap 12.49/box I believe. I guess that is where I am going. :)

Yes you need a fitting for contacts. In the past I found good deals on the web- lens crafters, four eyes, etc. that that offer special packages- lens fitting/ordering combined. It might help to search for coupons, look in mailings.

I disagree with Rachel K. My insurance covers contact lenses and the contact fitting exam.
In order to get contacts, you have to have another exam. They can't give you a contact prescription off of your glasses prescription. I've asked. The doctor will want to give you a trial pair of contacts and then you'll have to have a follow up in a week to see if those contacts fit and work for you. Contacts aren't a one size fits all kind of thing. I am unable to wear some of the popular brands of contacts and I only found that out through trial and error.
Most exams will run you right around $70.00. There's just no way around it. If you're happy with your glasses, then I say don't bother. Unless you're really wanting to wear contacts again, it's just a waste of money.

I think that is a deal. I go to Costco and I buy a tons of them before the prescription runs out....so I only go every 2-3 years to see the optomotrist.

I also buy my contacts at 1800contacts.com - easy and cheap.

If your eye exam is less than a year old, you doctor should provide you with a copy of your prescription at your request.

yeah it doesn't matter where you guy the price is about the same chances are you probably would have paid about that anyways even if it was done at the time of your eye exam because most insurance companies don't cover contacts or the contact lens fitting exam.
Edit: you do in fact need an exam for contacts. They need to fit proper you need to be checked to make sure you can where them, your prescription for your contacts can vary from your eye glass prescription especially if you an astigmatism.

you shouldnt need an exam if you had one earlier this year. your contact perscription is the same as your glasses. call up your eye doctor and tell them you want to give contacts another go. he/she should be able to give you a prescription and then you can order from were ever you want. This is what I did. my eye doctor gave me a trial pair of the ones he recomended for me to make sure they would work before I ordered them and the prescription expires one year to date from when I had my last eye exam
