Low Milk Supply in One Breast

I just started pumping since I'm back at work. Today, I have only been able to pump 1 ounce from my left side in the same time I can get 3-4 ounces on the right side. Is there anything I can do about this? I've been trying to make sure I start the baby nursing on the left.

What can I do next?

Ive got a an almost 3 week old and have had an issue with low milk supply also. I started taking Fenugreek yesterday which is a natural milk stimulation supplement and it seems to be helping. It only cost 7 bucks at GNC. I would recommend it.

That could be the side you nursed on last. If you continue having that issue with the same said I would call your dr. But I know when I was nursing both my boys now 10 and 7, I would have a picture of them with me that I looked at when I would nurse. That helped with the let down. With my oldest part of my issue was the pump I had. With my youngest I invested in an Madella pump in style. I think it worked better being able to do both sides at once. I know that this can be aggravating and stressful for you. But hang in there. I think it's wonderful when mothers continue to breastfeed when they go back to work! I did it with mine but was not always easy.

Good luck and God bless you and your little miracle!

I sometimes have that problem! I have found that for me, what works, is to start on the opposite breast and let my son finish on the side that doesn't produce as much. I always let him go for a lot longer on the side that doesn't produce as much and usually have another let down on that side. Another thing that helps is this tea from Central Market called My mother's milk, it helps boost your milk supply! Works really well! Something else I notice with me, if I don't drink enough water then I don't produce as much milk, especially on the side that usually has a lower supply! So make sure you are drinking enough water! I hope that helps!

HI. I nursed my now 20 month old until she was 15 months old. I had surgury to remove a tumor before I was pregnant so one breast never really produced much milk. It was fine for me the first few months but after that I just nursed on one side. Now I am NOT suggesting you do that - I am just trying to tell you that even if one side doesn't produce as much as the other -- your body will make adjustments for you ;-)

I used the Fenugreek at times when my milk dropped. I would get the pills. I tried the liquid and accidently got the one with alcohol and it was nasty. I threw it away ;-( Here is some info on it: http://www.kellymom.com/herbal/milksupply/fenugreek.html

I also really liked this tea that I bought but I can't remember the name and i can't find it online. Sorry...I have spent the last 10 mins trying to find it. ;-)

I would also make sure to keep your water intake up. That will help too.

You might also evaluate whether you might need a bigger/smaller breast shield for that breast. My left side (the one I had surgury on) actually pumped better with a larger shield - who knows why - but it did.

While I do mostly stay home -- I used to travel quite a bit. I had to leave my daughter for an entire week when she was about 8 months old -- and I was able to keep my milk supply up and bring back a cooler full of milk. ;-) It was hard work -- but totally worth it!

Good Luck!

Anytime my supply drops, I notice if I significantly increase my water intake, it increases my milk supply.

I exclusively breastfed both my boys, thus I pumped some with each of them, and I always had uneven milk production. My left always made more than my right. It was usually only that lopsided (more than 2-3 ounce difference) if I fed off of one side only, or if my boys ate more off of one side. Otherwise, it was a 1-2 ounce difference on a regualar basis. It was never a problem, I was just aware of it like you were and always made an effort to feed off the lower producing side to keep milk production up.

I still have that problem and ive had it for a while and I work and pump as well. Babies tend to have a side that they prefer. Ive noticed my son nurses better on that side...ie the way he sucks. Its just more comfortable for some reason. When you pump dont stop right after you think you are done and run out of milk. Ive learned to keep pumping till your milk lets down again and that will up your production. It can be tiresome but if you are serious about keeping your production up it will help. Also if you want to up your production completly you can take herbal supplements that are completly safe for the baby. I took these. They are fenugreek and blessed thistle. You need to take them together. The only side affect is with the fenugreek and it will make you smell like maple syrup...not too bad! Good luck! I hope you figure something out!
