Low Lying Placenta - Ogdensburg,NY

First let me start by saying that I am a worry wart by nature and a hypocondriac so I freak about everything. I went to a regular routine doctors appointment this morning and my OB told me that she is sending me for a follow up ultrasound to check and see if my placenta is still low. I asked her if the results came back showing that it was, what did it mean and she said that I may end up needing a c-section if it is. I know its not the end of the world but to me this is horrible news. I am freaking out and I so dont want and cant handle a c-section. I have an ultrasound scheduled for tomorrow but I thought I would try to make myself feel a bit better by hearing from some other Mommas that were told they had a low placenta that moved up on its own
Tell me I wont need a c-section please! I need reassurance =(
PS. This is my second baby and my first was (IMO) as routine as it gets, vaginal delivery-no intervention and I want that again with this baby

Sorry I forgot to add that I am 30 weeks along

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So I just got back from my ultrasound and Yeahhhhhhhhhhh, my placenta has moved up. My doctor said that you need at least 2 cms between the placenta and the cervix and Im measuring at 3.7 cms. I dont know if thats normal or still on the low side but it is definitely past 2 cms so Ill take it - Thank you to all that responded with your kind words of encouragement

Hi,

I had a low lying placenta at 18 weeks. The doctor scheduled me for ultra sounds frequently to see if it had moved. By week 30 it moved up on its on, it still has time to move.

Hope this helps!

No worries mama...I had a mild placenta previa up until about 36 weeks. I was bleeding pretty heavily on a weekly basis and everything and just magically at one of my ultrasounds had moved itself up.

It was my 3rd baby and was terrified that I would end up w/ a C-section. Just follow dr.'s advice and rest up and try to stay off your feet!

It could still move, but worst case is it doesn't and you have a c-section. Believe me, you can handle it.

FWIW, I had complete placenta previa with my first, and a scheduled c-section at 37 weeks because of it. It was no big deal.

Here is your lemonade out of lemons part: if the placenta doesn't move and you have to have a c-section, you'll know this beforehand and can plan for and around it. Scheduled c-sections are sooo much easier than emergency ones. The scar is in a really discreet place and many women recovery easily. I did.

Good luck to you, no matter which route this takes you.

When I was pregnant with my first, I found out at the 20 week ultrasound that the placenta was low-lying. They scheduled me for another ultrasound at 35 weeks and it had moved up. When it happened, I have no idea...Good luck!

Mine moved enough for me to deliver vaginally.

I had a low lying placenta at my 20 week ultrasound and went back at 30 weeks and it had moved. So you still have time! I had a friend who was told that there was NO way she'd deliver vaginally because the placenta was completely covering it but it also moved. So there is hope! Do not stress or worry...I know easy to say - hard to do!

A low lying placenta is when the placental tip is within 2cm of the internal cervical os (or opening). If the placenta crosses over the is it's called a complete previa. Most low lying placentas move enough that a vaginal delivery will probably happen. As the uterus grows it pulls the placenta with it. So if at say...18weeks the placenta is 1.5cm away from the os most likely it'll move plenty far away to have a vag birth. If at 18wks away it's only .5cm from the os...there's still a pretty good chance it'll move enough but there's also a chance that it won't. You've already mentioned the worst case scenario...a c/s. if that's what it takes to get a healthy baby out, so be it! You CAN'T deliver a placenta before the baby. Just make it through the night, get your scan tomorrow and you'll hopefully be able to stop worrying!! My fingers are crossed for you that it's moved enough!! Good luck.

Hey.

I had a low-lying placenta that developed into full-on placenta previa. I was on bed-rest for 5 weeks. BUT, as my pregnancy progressed, the placenta moved into a completely normal position, and I had a very normal (actually pleasant, trouble-free) pregnancy. As the uterus expands, the placenta moves along with it. A fair number of women have a low-lying placenta in the first or second trimester, but only a tiny fraction of those women wind up needing C-sections. Chances (just straight-up statistical chances) are good that you'll be in that larger group.

Another way to look at it is, your worst-case scenario isn't that bad. Okay, absolutely worst-case, you'll have an anesthetized birth with no labor pains. Yes, the recovery is a little longer, etc., but it's a recovery. Within a month, you'll feel completely normal.

Take care,

Mira

I would say that if it shows and your 30 weeks, most likely you will need a c-sec. I had the same thing happen but, it was with my 1st. It wont be terrible, I promise! Just see what the doctor says and express your concerns at the appointment.
The risk of pushing when you have a low lying placenta isn't worth it! What is your biggest fear going into a c-section? You can handle it, it's really not that bad. The only thing that irked me was not being able to drive for a bit. I was up walking around as soon as I could afterward. Just take a deep breath and remember what ever happens will be what is best and the healthiest way for you to welcome this baby into this world.
Take care, and keep us posted.
