Losing Weight After Twins

Hi other twin moms,

I recently had twin boys who were 7 pounds and 5 ounces and 6 pounds and 8 ounces. I gained 47 lbs which is pretty much the norm for twins and have lost that weight. However, I am left with extreme stretch marks which I did not have in my first pregnancy and a ton of loose skin that I am trying to contend with. I have never been a very vain person and am so thankful that my boys are healthy and realize that is the most important thing. My main objective now is how do I fit back in my clothes with all this extra loose skin and is there any way besides plastic surgery to shrink it somewhat. What has other mulitples mothers done to get back in their clothes?

What can I do next?

I lost weight quickly after my twins, but the loose skin does take some time. As someone else noted, the stretch marks will fade in about a year and the skin will firm up as well. I have to say mine never completely went back to how it was before them, but almost :) COngratulations on you big baby boys!

Have you tried binding? I did it after my child was born (not twins) I kept a bandage around my mid section for 60 days after the baby was born (I had it on the same day I gave birth) and I wore it day and night. I'm not certain it helped my skin go back but I figured it didn't hurt. I know that after liposuction the doctors have the patients wear compression garmets for several weeks - I figured it was similar. I got the idea after reading that Brook Burke did it - she has a website that sells them (baboosh.com - I think) Google Brook Burke and you should find them. Good luck - it does take at least a year to get back to normal. Anyway - I was pretty proud that I was able to wear a bikini again - I will do it again after my second.

I've been told that the earlier the exercise (sit up type), the better. Somehow the stars do it. I have bounced back but when I was over 40, all of a sudden, the loose skin came out of nowhere. I spend two years exercising with a personal trainer. He insisted you could do it through exercise. When it didn't, he tried to blame me for not working as hard at it as I could have. You'll read many articles that nothing will help at that point except plastic surgery. So, I did it and it was great. So, I'd wait until the over 40 real sag hits to do surgery.

Hi R.,
Congrats on healthy babies! I think the one thing to keep in mind is to have patience with our bodies. Just like learning patience with our babies, our bodies need the same attention. I have one son and my last month of pregnancy had horrible stretch marks. I agree with Graciela that it will definitely take a year for your body to really get back to where it used to be. Not only in appearance but also your internal organs must find their way back to their original place.

Of course healthy eating and exercise are crutial. Stroller Strides offers a great stroller fitness programs for moms and babies. It is great for any level of fitness with a unique format to bond with baby. The only requirement is that you are six weeks postpardum with your doctor's permission. The instructors are trained in pre/postnatal so they know exactly how to meet your needs and adjust the workout for you. There is a grand opening for a location in Grapevine on Wednesday, August 5. You can check it out here www.strollerstrides.net/grapevine. Or you can contact me with any questions. :-)

Wow, just wanted to say congratulations on your special deliveries!! I have two year old twins, and my stretch marks were HORRIBLE, but they've faded and now they're just kind of translucent. As for the loose skin, I haven't really had much success losing the weight, but my skin has definitely firmed up from what it was. I'm sure you'll be back to your own size in no time! =)

Hi Sweetie, You babies are still new. Remember it took 9 months to stretch that skin & you're a little older & it's your second pregnancy so it's going to take a little longer to get things back like they were. Don't be dicouraged it will happen. You've lost the pounds so the hard part is over. There are lots of creams out there to help with the stretch marks. Don't worry you will be back to your beautiful self before you know it. Take care. Exercise when you can & concentrate on those wonderful baby boys. You'll be back to normal & not even realize how it happened. God bless you & your precious family.

Sad, but true- the skin is yours forever. I did not have a single stretch mark until I was 8 months pregnant, and then all at once my abdomen appeared purple. I only gained 33lbs with my twin girls. The day I went home from the hospital I was only 8 lbs over my start weight. I did everything I could possibly think of trying. This even includes some sort of light therapy (cannot remember for the life of me what it was called) that cost me several hundred dollars. The only way to rid your body of all of the excess skin is surgical.
