I know it is normal to loose hair after you have a baby but I was just wondering if anyone knew how long that is last. My youngest son is almost 6 months old and really would like my hair to stop falling out in clumps!!!! Any suggestions???

What can I do next?

I had the same problem with my hair too! I lost a lot of hair and knew it was normal, but still was a bit scary to see in the shower after shampooing. You can't really do anything about it, but let it take its course and it does come to an end. To make myself feel like I had some control over it (and to feel better) I bought some hair, skin and nail vitamins.

C.,

Your not alone, except my youngest will be 1 next week. I actually got my hair cut and asked the girl about it. There really isn't anything you can do. I have long hair and we find it all over the house. Its driving me nuts, because when I was pregnant I didn't loose much or any at all.

I read online to try a thicking shampoo. I know I have seen that at the stores, so I am going to try it out.

Good Luck and let me know if you find anything that works!

Hi I am a hairstylist. When you are pregnant you don't shed any hair. So, when your hair starts to shed after the baby you are shedding all that hair that built up over your pregnancy. Normally people shed about a 100 hairs a day. I know with my first I lost hair up until she was one. There really isn't anything you can do. And a thickening shampoo won't do anything for your hair falling out. If you are getting bald spots then I would talk to your doctor. Also it is not uncommon for your thyroid to be off after having a baby and one of the symptoms of that is excessive hair loss. Hope that helped some.

There are alot of factors and body changes that are causing the post-partum hairloss. One being vitamin deficiency. If you are nursing, you might be losing important nutrients and vitamins compensating for the baby's needs. Hairloss is often a signal of a vitamin deficiency. The other cause is hormone imbalance.

My ob/gyn suggested continuing with the prenatal vitamins until I stopped nursing...and also boosting vitamin rich foods in my diet. Check out a great book called "Fertility Cycles and Nutrition" by Marilyn Shannon. It's fantastic for just overall health..especially women in childbearing and menopausal years, or those looking for natural helps with female issues and concerns.
