Looking for Suggestions on Convertible Car-Seat

So, our sweet baby girl is totally out-growing her infant carrier! She's a pretty big girl... really long. At her 6 month check-up she was 18 pounds, 28 inches long. She's almost 8 months old now, and I'm sure she's 20 pounds by now. She is our first, and my husband and I had no idea she was supposed to be out of the carrier by now! I felt like a horrible mom when someone made a comment the other day that she was way too big for her car-seat. We want her to be safe for sure, but are not quite sure what route to go on the convertible car-seat thing. She'll need to be facing backwards for at least 4 more months now, until she's 1-year-old, right? I found a seat at Babies-R-Us that I really like. It's an Alpha Omega Elite by Cosco. I liked it first because it's a cute pink & chocolate pattern, but I did some research on it too, and it seems to be a pretty good choice.

Basically, after the story in the news a few months ago about all the car-seats failing certain collision tests, I'm really freaked out about getting the wrong car-seat, or one that doesn't work right. I know, I know "it wouldn't be on the market if it wasn't safe," but all the car-seats that failed were top-of-the-line brands that passed all the required tests when the car crashed at 30 mph, but when they tested 35 mph (or something like that), they failed miserably!

I guess this is a really long way of asking if anyone has a convertible car-seat they absolutely love... or more importantly, that they're baby absolutely loves. There is such a huge price range, too. We are on a budget, but we want to make sure we get a safe seat for our baby girl. There are some for a little as $49, but it makes me wonder if those are really that great, when the average one is about $150-$200.

Thank you for your help!

I have both the Evenflo Triumph and Britax Marathon. I would go with the Evenlfo Triumph. My little girl has a thick behind and legs. It has always been a tight fit locking the belts in on the Britax Marathon. It's either the seat is not deep enough, or the bottom belt (between crotch) isn't long enough??? The Triumph is comfy and safe, and an ease to use.
Keep in mind, she will eventually outgrown that Triumph though. There are other Britax models you might want to consider.

Hi - We just learned this as well and ordered a seat! Our 6 mos. old is 27" long and weighs 18.5 lbs. I felt bad at first too but then realized her carrier says its good up to 22 lbs, so I was overreacting. I found this Fisher Price seat in an article and read several 5-star reviews of it on Amazon and a couple of other sites. It is made for FP by Britax, but costs alot less than the Britax seats. I found the best price at this website: http://www.albeebaby.com/fiprsavodeco2.html ... and, free shipping!

Also, the study I think you are citing was done with baby carriers, not convertable seats if I'm remembering correctly.

Good luck!

Britax, they are alittle pricey but worth it. There the helmet foam surrounded the back and head. Even the side of headrest has the helmet foam. Take a look at some of these car seats, pull back the cloth and look at what will protect your baby girls head if you were to get into an accident. Some car seats have a sliver of foam then plastic.
I recommend a britax car seat; my son was 10lbs at birth when I weighed 130 lbs before I was pregnant. He grew out of this carrier quick. He grew right into his Britax car seat. We have always used the britax, I love it.

Good luck,
V.

I have the Alpha Omega Elite 3-in-1 carseat by Cosco. They're highly rated in safety and seem very comfortable. It was also SO easy to install and to change the height of the straps and all that. I love it. It also has a removable base which allows it to fit better and not take up so much room in my Honda Civic. My son seems very happy in it. I've had him in it for awhile and we just turned it forward facing. I also like that it came with armrests and a detachable cupholder...not that we really NEED those things, but they're nice conveniences. I highly recommend this one. My friend has the brown and pink one for her daughter and she loves it.

And don't think you have to buy the expensive Britax brand (seats are well over $200)...they are nice, but the only difference is the maximum weight each seat will hold in a harness. Britax Marathons will hold up to 100 lbs in a harness, but really, what 100 lb child is even in a carseat?

Hi S.-

My son grew out of his carrier at 4 1/2 months. We bought the Evenflow Triumph and have been happy with it. Some of our friends bought the Cosco one because they thought their son fit in it better.

We consulted Consumer Reports and the overall rating for the Britax Roundabout ($220) and Evenflo Triumph 5 ($120) were both rated 81 of 100 points, followed by Cosco Alpha Omega ($160) with 80 points. The Britax Marathon ($250) was rated 58 points.

The Evenflo Triumph 5 also received the highest rating (all excellent) in the crash protection ratings, and the Britax all very good ratings.

The Britax was rated excellent in all ease of use and fit to vehicle categories, and the Evenflo was all very good ratings, so those are the other considerations.

Good luck to you!

I did ALOT of research on car seats. We bought britax marathon. For one, it will last until your child is 65 lbs. Also, if you get the britax boulevard (I think that is the name) it has side impact protection. The only one out there that does- I think.

Consumers Union retracted its article on side-impact collisions. If you go to www.consumerreports.org, you can read the information. Car seats are currently rated on front-end collisions, not side-impact, which is what the Consumers Union study looked at.

We bought the Cosco Alpha Omega Elite based on the recommendation from a co-worker who is certified on the safety of car seats. We kept our son rear-facing until he was about 18 months. It is best to keep them rear-facing for as long as they will fit that way....not just until their first birthday.

Hi S.,

I too have "big" little girl with super long legs. I got the Alpha Omega Elite when she out grew her carrier too and we love it, because it adjusts with all her growth spurts with the adjustable head rest and changes to a boooster when she's ready. I think with all the uses you get out of this chair and the safety rating, it's a gret value.
