Looking for Low Cost Preschool in McKinney

My almost 4 year old son needs to be in preschool this fall. He is very social and smart, he just needs to learn how to be in a classroom setting. He doesn't do very well at church sunday school or Awana. (He is used to free play at our gym's child care.) The problem is we can't afford a MDO or traditional preschool. I looked into Head Start in our district and made some phone calls however during the phone interviews it was determined he wouldn't qualify because English is his first language and he has no learning disabilities. Even though he has trouble in class situations, that doesn't qualify for him to be there. Any ideas? We role play school at home, but it doesn't help him for classroom type settings. Thank you in advance.

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for all of your tips on where to take my son for preschool. I made phone calls this morning based off of your suggestions and we have a tour scheduled at Concordia Academey at Our Savior Lutheran church in McKinney next week. We also have one back up plan if that does not work out. Thank you again for all of your suggestions! :)

Hi S.,

My kids go to FBC McKinney and LOVE it. They have a very reputable program and I know they offer scholarships because one of my kids is on one. You just have to fill out a very simple application.

Best wishes for finding a wonderful program!

I know it is a MDO but our Church in McKinney offers financial assistance to families. It is Our Savior Lutheran Church on Virginia just west of HWY 75. I worked in the preschool for a few years and my children were there. I loved it. It is a wonderful environment and you don't have to do a full week besides the less days you do the less expensive it is. He hasn't been in that setting before so five days a week may be overwhelming. I would -start him out at three days to help him get ready for n-ext -year. Registrations usually start in January so you want to call right away. You may find its less than you thought. ###-###-#### Press 2 for Shcool!

Check out the PALS program - there's one at Glen Oaks Elementary. I don't know much about it, but I see little kids there all the time.

My son goes to Crossing Point Christian School of of Hunt Dr in McKinney. I pay $125. a month for two days a week from 9-noon. He is learning all the basics to get him ready for Kindergarten. When I was shopping around, this place was the cheapest and so far, I am very impressed. This is my son's second year at this school. Good Luck.

You should look in to the Holy Family School in McKinney: http://www.hfsmckinney.org/history/index.htm
It's affiliated with my church, but I have also heard rave reviews from parents who sent kids there. It's not too expensive to start with, and they offer financial aid, as well.

I would definately look into North Texas Christian Academy ###-###-####). It's located at the NW corner of 75 and Wilmeth (1 exit north of 380) in the High Point Church of Christ building. They start with MDO programs and go all the way up to the 6th grade! It is more affordable than McKinney Christian Academy and they have a wonderful, loving, nurturing staff. Both of our sons go there. Our oldest son started there with a 2-day MDO program and we went there out of desperation after a negative experience with a Montessori school. It was a horrible period of time - he no longer enjoyed going to Sunday School and clung to my leg. But he quickly adjusted to the small, intimate setting at NTCA and absolutely LOVES it. I drive all the way from SE Allen to the schoool everyday but it is SO worth it! The school and the staff becomes an extension of your family. If you call them, tell them that C. Fletcher sent you!

How low cost are you talking? My kids go to FCA McKinney, we pay for 3 days $300 a month. www.fcamckinney.com It's a really good preschool and the teacher for the 4 year old preK class is great! Check it out. Toni Gore is the head of the school.

The school (a Christian school)that my boys go to has a financial aid program, but I'm not sure that it applies to the preschool. Now they do have a "kinderreadiness" class that is considered part of the grade school, so that may qualify. Anyway, you may want to call and ask about what may be available for you son.

It is the North Texas Christian Academy. Their number is ###-###-####. Here is their website: http://www.northtexaschristian.org/

Good luck!!

P.S. I know that another school my older son went to offered aid also (it was also at a church). So you may want to ask any program that you look into (especially church programs) if they have financial aid!!

HOLY FAMILY SCHOOL!!! I'm sorry I can't remember the number. They're off the square over the RR tracks and are amazing. They also offer scholarships for those who qualify. I used to teach there, after we enrolled my son. Check them out. They are 2-3 yr olds (potty-trained) all the way through Kindergarten. Good luck.

If you can't afford traditional pre-school, try contacting the homeschool network in your area and talk to some of the Mom's there on how they handle their boys. My youngest was homeschooled and he had trouble sitting still until he was 6 - tested out at 4th grade a year to 1 1/2 yrs ahead of peers so don't get discouraged.

If you can't afford school, see about working at it. I worked at a mother's day out two days a week just so my children could go there...plus I got paid :)
Another alternative is looking into the public highschool. I know Plano and Richardson have a preschool program. At Plano West you do not even need to live in Plano ISD to attend. It is not as expensive as some. Good Luck, L.

Hi S.,
I just thought it was so funny to read your story. I am in the exact same situation. I just moved to Prosper from Mckinney two months ago. My son is the exact same way. Prosper has a pre-K program but its all day and is $5000. I need him to go somewhere also but I want it to be part time because I stay home with my daughter of 15 months also.
Good Luck to you. Please post if you find something please. I will do the same for you.
