Looking for Good/cheap Dress Alterations

I'm in a wedding this spring and we just picked out our bridesmaid dresses today at David's Bridal. We were floored, however, to find out that our alterations (hemming and taking in the bodices) would cost almost as much as the dresses themselves. Does anybody know of a reasonably priced and reliable alterations place? Anything in the Valrico/Brandon/Plant City/Tampa area would work. We were quoted $50 for the hem and $60 for the bodice work. (Granted the bodice has boning and the skirt has pickup pleats...so maybe this isn't outrageous?) Any advice is much appreciated!

What can I do next?

Hi L.,
I am a seamstress and yes David's Bridal is always overpriced for their alterations. I've been in many weddings and always do the alterations for myself and the other bridesmaids. I just recently made a flowergirl dress for my daughter to match the bride's dress that had the very popular "pick-up" look you are reffering to.
It can be a tricky alteration, (if it is the balloon style) but you can find someone to do it for less than that bridal shop. The suggestions on this page will probably help, or you are welcome to contact me. I live in Valrico (Bloomingdale area). I can send you pics of the dresses I altered and the flowergirl dress if you want.
I just moved to the area in August and am also currently a SAHM. I would do the alterations for half the price and maybe less, depending what specifically is needed.
Good Luck to you!
Samantha

There is a place in Brandon off Bloomingdale and Providence (in the Publix Shopping Center) that has really good prices. She charged my husband only $8 to Re-Weave a hole in a pair of his dress pants and I think around $10 to hem another pair of pants. It's worth a try. I just can't remeber the name of the spot off the top of my head. It has a catchy name with "Sew" in it. If that helps.

My neighbor owns Vera's Tailor in Fort Myers behind Outback. He does a good job for me and I know he can do dresses.

Hi L.,
I found an alterations shop at Winthrop Towne Center in Riverview...that is on the corner of Providence and Bloomingdale...This guy and I don't know the name of it...is next door to an herb and vitamin shoppe. He did some formal attire in a hurry for me a couple of years ago. He is near the Starbuck's Coffee shop. Good luck.
