Looking for Fun Tooth-fairy-type Traditions

Hi-- I have a son who just turned six. He has his first loose tooth. After realizing it's not a tragedy (he was initially pretty worried) he is enjoying wiggling his tooth and wondering when it will come out.
What do other families do to acknowledge growing up and losing baby teeth? I'm familiar with the standard put it under your pillow and the tooth fairy will leave you money and I think my husband likes that (he's an accountant!) but I'm wondering if anyone has other fun tooth traditions.
Thanks in advance for your ideas!

Hi there, I am amother of two , a 6 and 3 year old, I am from South Africa and have been living here for 9 years. I continued my tradition from South Africa which is the tooth mouse,my husband liked the idea because we are not big on fairies anyways. Have fun exploring.

We leave money under the pillow, but it is always a gold colored dollar coin. My girls love their gold dollars and they hold onto them for a long time before spending them. I had to use a dollar bill once because I didn't make it to the bank on time and my daughter was very disappointed.

Hi! We do the usual "money for the tooth" tradition, but we also added something my 9-yr. old twin girls have loved since they began losing teeth. When one of them loses a tooth, she writes a note to the tooth fairy to tell about how it happened. In the note, she also always asks the tooth fairy to put their name on the note. She leaves a line for the fairy to write on and then she signs it. We have had fun coming up with tooth fairy names, like Esmerelda, Fantasia, Annamaria, and Bob. (Yes, there are boy tooth fairies too. My hubby told them a wild story about all the boy tooth fairies that don't usually do the night jobs, but that Bob really liked it and is good at it.) :-) Bob is now the most sought after fairy in our house. :-)

You need pixie dust! They call it shimmer powder at the store. You can find it at Claire's or even Wal-Mart or Target. We can always tell where our tooth fairy came in through the window and where she flew because there is always pixie dust all over the window sill, bed and money! Also, we go to the bank and ask for new one dollar bills or new coins. This makes the money more special and our kids always save it instead of spend it!
Just a note - Our son swallowed his first tooth that he lost. We had him write a note to the tooth fairy so she knew he lost a tooth!
Have fun with this. I look forward to hearing other people's traditions. Also, there are a ton of books out there about the tooth fairy. Check it out the next time you take the kids to the library.

We had a different kind of tooth fairy tradition at our house. My son was born with a defective heart valve and because of that, dental hygiene has been extremely important. He would put his tooth under his pillow but, the tooth fairy would leave him a sparkly tooth brush with his name on it or fun flavored kid toothpaste or minty dental floss or sugar free gum. It was always something for his teeth. He came home from school in the second grade crying because another child had told him the "truth" about the tooth fairy. He told him that the tooth fairy brought him money and it was his Mom. I told him that the tooth fairy had always brought him things for his teeth. He brightened and said that the "real" tooth fairy wouldn't leave just money, she'd have to leave you something for your teeth. He is a Senior in high school now and occasionally will tease me about the tooth fairy not giving him cool toothbrushes anymore.

We started the tradition several years ago in which the tooth fairy leaves "Special Money" either a $2 bill or Gold dollar coin. A new tooth brush, maybe a pack of thier favorite gum.
But yes under the pillow is " the tooth fairy" Even my BIG kids teenagers still eagerly enjoy the suprise gifts from the tooth fairy.

We did the standardized version of tooth fairy growing up; but, I remember one time I had lost my tooth. My mom had me write the tooth fairy a letter explaining what had happened. That might be a cute idea, letter writing or picture drawing for the tooth fairy.

When the tooth fairy came to our house, she left a dollar coin in one of those tiny plastic bags used for jewelry and there was always fairy dust in the bag. Fairy dust looks remarkably like fabric glitter-very fine and sparkley, not rough and sharp like craft glitter. Thanks for the reminder! My 17 yr old got her wisdom teeth out this morning, I think even though the surgeon kept the teeth and she is almost grown up, the tooth faity might still make a visit.

S., We do the money under the pillow from the tooth fairy, but I try and give a special coin or something fun like a two dollar bill. Our local movie theatre gives only $2 bills and gold dollar coins, or 50 cent pieces back as change when you go to the movies. I'ts fun and I save them for tooth fairy money. Or you could go to a coin store and get a special coin there. Good luck and have fun!

Hi S.. When my oldest, who is now 9 started losing teeth, we told him that the tooth fairy will melt if she gets wet. So we put the tooth in a cup of water next to his bed. That way I dont have to climb into the top bunk to search for it! The tooth fairy leaves the money next to or under the cup and we get to keep the teeth! I have also heard about putting the tooth in a baggie under the pillow so it does not get lost.

I glitter my girls and the money, so that they think the tooth fairy flew over them and put glitter everywhere. It is simple, but they love it.

Well, this isn't much of a different tradition from under the pillow, it just makes it more fun. When you take and get it out from under his pillow, sprinkle some glitter under his pillow and kinda leave a trail out his window/door.

If you decide to go with the tooth fairy,
I would suggest a special pillow (about 3x5)
with a pocket to put the tooth in.

That is what I used and it was very handy.

I went to the bank and bought a couple of rolls of "gold" $1 coins that I saved for the tooth fairy to give to the kids....of course at our house we had a "bad" tooth fairy --sometimes it took her two or three nights to get around to our kids'! :)

We made a special pillow for the tooth. It is left out on the dresser ( not under the pillow "the dog might get it"... really it is so the "fairy" can get in and out quickly) We leave a dollar, a pack of sugar free gum and a small toy or hair thingy. My oldest daughter is the only one to get this so far... others are too young.

When she asked what the tooth fairy does... we told them they turn recycle them into fairy dust. That is why her teeth have to be clean and healthy.. The fairy dust doesn't work with yucky teeth.

A friend of mine wanted to keep the teeth ( with out the secrets) so her son writes a nice note to the TF and gets a small gift.

To keep it interesting ( my daugter has lost 8 teeth in 14 months) the tooth fairy hides the pillow with the gifts. Makes her look for it... building the excitement!

They all figure it out eventually... just push healthly habits.

When our children lost their teeth, the tooth fairy would leave them a Sacagawea dollar. We thought a regular dollar was too ordinary. We wanted it to be special for them. Also, we would leave them a note from the tooth fairy saying how beautiful and healthy their tooth looked. We would also encourage in their note to continue to eat healthy foods, brush and floss daily and keep up the great work. As a parent, I have documented every tooth they have lost, the date and where. I have saved everyone of their teeth, but the first two I scrapbooked them. BTW, my kids have saved everyone of their Sacagawea dollars.

Hi S.,
We do the money thing but do a couple of twists with it. We bought one of the quarter boards that has a drawing of the USA and a place to put the quarter from each state. Our son then received a couple of quarters from different states when each tooth came out. He is learning Geography at the same time and loves it! We have also thrown in a couple of the Sacajawea dollar coins, those came in when he lost 2 teeth in the same day. He has a special little wooden box, from Hobby Lobby, that has a little cloth in it that he always puts his tooth in under his pillow and where the tooth fairy leaves her coins.
Some times he leaves a note for the TF and she responds.
Have fun!,

The only tooth-fairy tradition I had when growing up was the same old put your lost tooth under your pillow before you go to sleep and in the morning it has magically turned into a quarter. My mom really got into it and different teeth were priced differently, so you'd get more for a molar than for a smaller tooth.

After thinking about for a minute I was thinking maybe something fun you could do is help him make a little coupon book (just some paper cut into maybe 2 inch X 4 inch strips and then stapled at one end). He could come up with some of his favorite things he likes to do or would like to do and color them in. One coupon could be making his favorite cookies with you one day or something else that's special or fun to him. He could color them or whatever and every time he loses a tooth he could get a fun little coupon.

I always got money. I had a book about loosing teeth with a special velvet pouch to keep the tooth. One time I lost a tooth on a ride at Six Flags and we couldn't find it. My dad wrote a note from the tooth fairy that said she caught it before it hit the ground and gave me money anyways.
At my mom's house we buried the tooth under a plant to help it grow.

For my 5 almost 6 yr old we started a tradition where he will dictate a letter to me to be written in teeny tiny letters for the teeny tiny fairy to read. We slip this in to a pocket that's attached to the stuffed tooth that has a smiling face on it. He laughs alot and that's all I need out of it....He's happy with it...
Have fun, many blessings too....

Love the tooth fairy game!! We tend to play down the money, but have a lot of fun. The tooth fairy always leaves a thank you note, sometimes a little gift like a sheet of stickers (typical), a small toy (under $2) for the first tooth!, and we also have little tooth fairy pillows that have a little fairy on the top (Hearth Song or Magic Cabin Dolls catalog) that contained one of each coin, quarter, dime, nickel, penny. For the last tooth lost, I think we did a couple dollars and an offical card thanking her for all her teeth, and that the tooth fairy would visit when her brothers lost their teeth. :) I guess I'll add that in our family, the tooth fairy is absolutely pretend--everyone plays the game, but it's "mama" who sprouts wings and plays fairy. Have fun!

Hi S.. I have so much fun being the tooth fairy!! She/he leaves a note each time(computer written) My two boys ages 7 and 8 actually believe there is such a thing! One time I forgot to take the tooth and my son was SO sad. That day at work I typed a note saying that the tooth fairy was on vacation and that a substitute tooth fairy was on duty for the first time and didn't know how the REAl tooth fairy got in so it placed the money on the front door with a note. Now my son is convinced that the tooth fairy gets in through the peep-hole of the front door. One time my son also tricked the tooth fairy by leaving little white rocks because he wanted some money. Well, the tooth fairy sent a note from the tooth fairy headquarters and he has felt so bad. Now periodically he will leave a note for the tooth fairy WITH money for her/him to give to someone who loses their tooth!
Have fun!

My daughter just lost her first tooth, I got one of those "gold" dollar coins from the bank and used that from the tooth fairy. I had her put her tooth in an envolope so it would be easier to find and I put the coin in the envolope after I took the tooth out. I have heard of using a cute box or pouch for the tooth too.

This may sound kind ogf silly, but my neice who is now an adult used to keep her lost teeth in a "tooth graveyard". After she lost one she would open an (old film container) and put it in. As the years went by her collection grew. That is the only different type of thing I can think of. Good luck. P.

I enjoy the magical feeling the kids get when they know that the tooth fairy is coming. I am a sahm with 4 kids and we have the tradition of giving the kids a two dollar bill no matter how big or small the tooth is. They can save it frame it or sell it for spending money. Also i have an autistic 6 year old and he enjoys thomas and really didn't understand the tooth fairy so we bout him a new toy nothing more than $5 dollars.

Good luck and have fun

Each child received The Tooth Fairy Book http://www.amazon.com/Tooth-Fairy-Book-Deborah-Kovacs/dp/... It comes with its own blue velvet pouch. The teeth are put in the pouch when they fall out and put under the pillow. The pouch really makes it easier to find the teeth for the tooth fairy. Also it has lots of cute stories and traditions about teeth. Each time a tooth falls outs we read the entire book at bedtime and put the tooth in the pouch under the pillow. There is a place in the back to track when each tooth falls out, put pictures of how they looked and write how they felt. My children are now in their last baby teeth and still insist on the tradition for their last few teeth - even though they no longer believe. We still sit and read the book together and laugh at the stories and read their memories of when their teeth fell out and how they felt.
