Looking for a Speech Therapist

Our 2 3/4 year old son was diagnosed with a speech delay when he turned two. We had been receiving services once a week in Chicago through Illinois' Early Intervention program. I spoke to a woman at Help Me Grow here in Ohio, but that program will not meet our needs. Therefore, we're now looking for a private therapist. Our son's issues now are not so much a delay in his speech (he has a large vocabulary and speaks in 3 to 6 word sentences), but more in his articulation. Depending on the word, he is sometimes easy to understand but other times impossible. If anyone has the name of a good speech therapist that might be able to see him once a week, I would really appreciate it. We live in Anderson and I'd love to find someone close to home.

Thanks so much!

A friend of mine is the Lead Speech Therapist at ABC Pediatrics. You can look at their website: http://www.abcpediatrictherapy.com/ or call ###-###-####. They're in West Chester, so it's probably 35-40 minutes from you. She says another option is CHMC. They have an office right by the mall(corner of Five Mile and State Rd.).

Hi E., We live in N. KY and we use First Steps. Please see your pediatrician and have them recommend you to First Steps. My child uses them for speech and gross motor and we love them. When they work with our daughter, they are working on her annunciation, as she too understands practically everything you say and sometimes is clear and most of the time blurred speech. We were recommended to them through a Children's Hospital Physical Therapist. They will also come to your home, which has worked out wonders for us. Your child may be more comfortable in his own home instead of a center or hospital. Our Govt subsidizes them so you pay what you can based upon your income.

I'm not as familiar with the specific service providers in your part of town. There are many private therapy companies in the Cincinnati area that should be able to provide services for articulation for your son. Check out Children's Hospital's website (cincinnatichildrens.org)and go to their Special Needs Resources Directory. Under therapy providers they have a list of many of the providers in our area. Therapy practices that I've specifically heard good things about include: ABC Pediatrics, Habilitation Services, COTI (Cincinnati Occupational Therapy Institute), and KidPower (co-owned by a speech therapist named Scott Fox who is very well known in the Cincinnati Community). Good luck on your search!

...maybe this has been said already, but did the check his ears? I mean really, really check...it sounds like the same issue a friend of mine had, there was excess fluid in the ears or behind the eardrum(?). Anyway, drained them, got tubes and clear speech in a couple days. :o)
