Looking for a Pediatrician in Portland, Maine

I have two basically healthy boys ages 5 and 10. We're moving to Portland and I'm looking for a pediatrician for them. I prefer a group because they seem more able to accommodate for sick visits, etc. I prefer a doctor who is not going to instantly prescribe meds but who isn't afraid of using current medications and procedures if necessary.

What can I do next?

We see Christine Gates at Intermed Family in South Portland (near the mall). She's our family doctor, too, and we've never had a problem getting in the same day if we need to, either with her or one of her partners. They also have a good weekend clinic. Only problem is that they have the world's worst phone system -- sometimes you have to wait on hold a while to schedule appointments.

Another good thing: she is ok with taking it slowly on meds; we were in for a persistent cough in my 13-month-old daughter just last week. Dr. Gates thought ears & lungs were fine, but told us that if she spiked a fever or got really out of sorts that we should consider antibiotics. She gave us a prescription in case we needed it, and left it up to us to make that call. I really appreciated that trust in us as good parents. (And we never filled the script, as she suspected!)

I second Dr. Balzer... Both my son and I are under his care. I even drive from further south than Portland.
"Dr. Balzer is at Pineland in New Gloucester. I think he is worth the drive. Very open to alternative medicine and respectful of parents' preferences. "

I have heard a lot of good things about University Healthcare - since they are a group, you might not always get your favorite but they seem to have a good selection.
The following aren't part of a big group but I have never had a problem getting in to see them when I need to.
Dr. Balzer is at Pineland in New Gloucester. I think he is worth the drive. Very open to alternative medicine and respectful of parents' preferences.
Kathryn Landon-Malone at True North in Falmouth is another great pediatric resource and almost always has something "non-medical" to recommend first for run of the mill health problems but not hesitant to recommend a more western medical approach if she thinks it is warranted.

I take my all my children to Maine Medical Center to the pediatric clinic (dr. Blaisdell). My oldest daughter has severe asthma and up until we moved here no one could do anything about it. They were the ONLY place that I found that tried everything until something worked. I know that it's a clinic and most people look down on clinics, but I never have a problem getting my kids in for emergencies and the dr's are very nice and will do whatever it takes to make you and your childs experience pleasent.

We go to University Health Care and really like it. They always answer the phone and I am pretty sure they don't book appointments too late so that they can fit kids in in case something comes up. Whenever my son has had an issue they've been able to get us in that day. 207-772-KIDS
Good luck!

I live in Portland and bring my 2 girls to Intermed in South Potland near the mall , we always have been able to come in same day if there was a problem and they have like a sick clinic on sat. We see Dr. Jon Foster, he is great with the kids but what I dont like is most of the well visits are with the nurse practitioners and not the Doc. he sees them once a year I think unless they are sick or I have a concern than we have always seen him.
