Try this for pet hair: the Rubba Scrubba from Flylady.net
Picks up pet hair like you wouldn't believe. As far as vacuums go, I have a Dyson Animal and love it (2 big hairy golden retreivers, a cat and 3 kids)
I am looking for an upright bagless vacuum cleaner. I am currently on my 4th vacuum in approximately 6 months. We have three dogs, two cats, a two year old and a twenty year old all in a 1200 square foot house, so there is a lot of dirt to be sucked up in a small area. I can not find a vacuum that I like to deal with the dirt and hair. The first vacuum we bought was the cheapest Dyson that Walmart sells. I loved the way the brush picked up on the carpet, but didn't like the way the attachment worked. While I am vacuuming, if I see dog hair on top of the baseboard heater, I like to whip off the attachment quickly and vacuum it up, then continue vacuuming the floor. Also I vacuum the couch weekly to get the dog hair off that, so I need a good attachment feature for that. The Dyson attachment was very cumbersome and hard to get off quickly. We returned the Dyson and got an Eureka (I think). Quickly returned that. Then got an Infiniti. That worked ok. Tbe attachment feature worked good, but I just didn't feel like the suction was there. After that broke in less than three months, we returned that and now have the Hoover Mach5. It is heavy and cumbersome and just doesn't feel like it gets the job done. I loved how the Dyson was so lightweight. I really wish that the attachments were different on the Dyson because I think that vacuum would work. I am a clean freak looking for the best upright vacuum! Please help me!

The Dyson pet model is FANTASTIC. Ok, the attachment process is a LITTLE cumbersome, but other than that, it works so well for pet hair. I have 2 dogs myself and I have had my Dyson for several years and it has not lost one bit of the suction. Sounds like a commercial, but its true!
We have two dogs, 4 cats and 3 month old twins....Needless to say I vacuum like a crazy woman! I have the purple dyson..the animal which I love for carpets, carpeted stairs and the couch when it really needs it (1 or 2 x a mo), but I have a cheapy dirt devil 'breeze' that is about 4 years old. It is just a little canister vacuum that I use for the hardwood floors. It is so little and light weight that I can carry it on my shoulder with the strap. It is great for daily vacuuming or to run it over the couch for a quick clean up. My advice is to invest in the dyson animal for the heavy duty hair clean up and a cheaper smaller vacuum for the daily clean up. This has worked for us..and it sounds like your pet hair issues are about the same (maybe a little less)!
Did you think of trying the Dyson cannister? That's what I have and I love it. The attachments come on and off fairly easily, I think.
I personally think that you might want to invest in a Meile (my friend has a cannister style) or an Electrolux. I have a very old (about 30 years) canister style Electrolux that really sucks up pet hair and anything else you can think of. Lots of money up front but you won't be replacing it every 6mos to a year.
Hi G.,
Rainbow rainbow rainbow. it's big and bulky and cumbersome, but it sucks the dirt into WATER so there's no dust ever!! my mother had hers for 20 years - my aunt still has it. I finally broke down and bought one last year, after going through 3 in one year. its the best investment i ever made. you can use it as a humidifier/air purifier, it does everything. i urge you and dare you. Its the best.
Try a different Dyson model... :)
Or go to a vacuum "repair" store where they refurbish vacuums and they may let you try or suggest something that you're looking for...
Have fun...
We spent a lot of money on an Electrolux with a HEPA system when the attachment on our ancient Kenmore (from Sears) broke, and our Kenmore, old as it was, was a much better vacuum. They range from about $149 to $500. I was very happy with our basic model. The Electrolux was closer to $400. It doesn't have nearly the suction of our old Kenmore, and both the Kenmore and Electrolux had HEPA filters.
I love my dyson animal...when you say that the attachment was difficult to get off quickly, you can not take it off all the way and use the suction through the top of the handle. You just slide off the attachment and there is a little slide top on the handle that you can slide over and voila a quick way to suction by the baseboard without the hassle of turning the attachment around and messing with the hose. I don't know if that is true of al dyson's but I know it is with the animal.
Miele rocks. I got the Miele manhattan.

I really like my Oreck because it's light-weight. However, my daughter got the Bissell upright made for homes with pets last year, and I have to say it cleans up the hair from our cat and 4 dogs much better. It's bagless and has a piece that comes off to do stairs, etc. I'd get this one. I think we got it at Wal-Mart.
I was wondering if anyone was going to mention the rainbow, do you have the attachments to clean your carpets too? My husband used to sell rainbow's and if he sold the rainbow but not the attachment for the carpet cleaner people would offer to cook him dinner if he would come back and clean their carpets. Everyone in his family owns one and they all love it. I want one I love the fact that it can do so much, vacuum, air humidifier, and if you buy the extra parts it becomes a rug cleaner. My parents have a vacuum made just fro dogs and my mom loves it.
Have you tried the Dyson "Animal" vacuum yet? I have 2 siberian huskies, a cat & a 2 year old and I am also looking for the best vacuum out there. I was thinking of getting the Dyson "Animal" vacuum...It's a little more expensive than the good old Dyson but I hear good things about it for animal owners. Good luck!
You need the Dyson Animal. It's made specifically for pet hair. I have the cannister version and I really like it.
I would recommend checking out Sears Kenmore. I actually have a Kenmore canister vac. Easy enough to pull on the floor, or carry if needed. It has a powered carpet brush roller unit that works great & has a dust sensor that lets you know when the carpets are clean. Also has a small powered brush for cleaning furniture & draperies. The upright versions may have the same features. Have been using this for almost 4 yesrs. Price ranges from $200 - $400 depending on selected features, including mechanical or electronic switch controls, for upright or canister style.
I use the hoover cyclon and I love it!!! It is bagless the attachments are easy to come off. It has this one piece call the the turbo and let me tell you it picks up all the cat hair (3 cats) off the couch and chairs. We actually found it at Big Lots for 80.00 and at every other store (Walmart, Target, Kmart) it selss for 142.00!!!!! I love seeing all the dirt it picks up (gross yes I know) so then I feel it is doing the job!!!
Good luck!
I know they are expensive, but, My husband bought us a Filter Queen over 2 years ago and it is still running strong. We have a dog, had a cat and have 3 kids.
It is bagless and has filters that come with it and you can purchase more for it. It's a canister vacuum and rolls around. Has a long hose and can reach just about anywhere. It's very easy to use.
I love mine and am now very happy he bought it.
Good luck.
