I recommend you check out thebabywearer.org. You have to sign up, but they don't spam you or sell your information, and they have a forum there (very similar to this one, actually) all about different forms of carriers, and so you could ask and get some very educated answers. They also have an incredible list of shops complete with ratings from various baby-wearing moms. Good luck!

but honestly, I still wear my 2 1/2 year old and his Vatanai is holding it's (resale) value better than the US dollar. You can get a used German Style Wrap at thebabywearer dot com and then sell it later. You'll be so glad you did.

ERGO has a "sport" variety that is supposed to be lighter weight than the original ERGO. Many moms have complained that the original lacked breathability so the "sport" version was made with a thinner, more breathable fabric.

My daughter falls asleep easily in our ERGO, and there is a hood that I can use to cover her head, but she's a hot baby and still gets sweaty, even though we have the "sport." Its still a good carrier, though.

I really don't know of any "cheap" slings/wraps. However, you can always sell your gently used ones on Ebay or Craig's list. I loved my Zolowear. They make a mesh sling:

I got a maya wrap for my my second. I LOVED it. I think it was $60 bucks though. If I were you and wasn't planning on having another kiddo, I don't think I'd buy another one. Now, that being said, i think the maya wrap can also be used if you stick the kids on your back...

I have an Ergo and it's worth every penny I spent on it!! I never really got the hang of a wrap, and slings were just uncomfortable when my son got too heavy, but the Ergo can be comfortably used with a 90lb adult (there are pics on their website)! This is something that can you can use as your son gets older. I don't know anything about the sweaty factor, but maybe since the Ergo is more open than the Moby, you could slowly wean him away from sleeping only against you. That being said, my son is 3.5yo and is STILL a sweat machine!!!! (even in his own toddler bed with no blanket!!)

Been threw them all. We have twins and my husband and I love the ERGO. Wish I knew about it from the start. From infant to forty pounds, it's comfortable for you and baby. Never puts any pressure on my back and the only one my kids will sleep in. Got to go. Ones waking up!

I LOVE The sleep sacks (you can get them at babies r us). They come in light cotton fabric. The only thing is that they don't have the swaddle component for after newborn stage. I actually just made one with some fabric myself and used that with the sleep sack. My daughter is 11 1/2 months old and still sleeps in it. They are wonderful!

I have an Ergo and love it. My husband and I have used it since our guy was about 8 months old. He's now just over 3 and we still use it for certain things. We just wear him on our back now. It was so worth the money we spent. And if you are in the Sacramento area, watch the sales at Goore's and you can get it for even less. That's what we did when we were looking. We got a great deal. If you are a baby wearer, you may just continue doing it even after your little one is walking, so the Ergo may be a great way to go. They also sell well on Craigslist when you want to sell it. I LOVE my Eurgo...wroth every penny. Especially with a slightly older child like you have. There is a hood to tuck them in. I call my Eurgo her "sleeping pill" because it works everytime. Good luck!

PS. I've noticed a TON of Eurgos on craigslist...but they hold thier value very good so they are not much cheaper than buying new...but you may say 20-40 bucks on a used one : - )
