First determine how far you are willing to drive to take your child to preschool. Most preschools in the area start when the child is 2 years 9 months for preschool. But there is a Transition semester before that and a Parent & Me before Transitions. It's all geared to getting your child used to the schedule and social aspects of preschool. After determining how far you're willing to drive, take a tour of the school. Call each one that you are interested in and see for yourself what the school is like. This is very important. I have my daughter at The Sherman Oaks Nursery School (TSONS.org). There is a heavy waiting list for preschool and priority is usually given to siblings of children already enrolled in the school. That is the way it is in most schools. If this is your first child, get your child into either the Parent & Me or Transitions classes as soon as possible so you have some other way to get into school. TSONS is popular but not all of them have heavy wait lists. Neighborhood School, Maggy Haves, Sunnyside, etc. are all in your area. I've also found that the religious preschools (Stephen S. Wise, Temple Beth Hillel, etc. are easier to get into as their wait list is not as extensive). If you have no clue which preschools are in your area, I suggest going online and doing a search for preschools in your area. PS. Yes, the wait list thing is a little overwhelming but don't get discouraged. TSONS had kids on their wait list as soon as the baby had a birthdate! I waited until my child was about 10 months old before I started the process. There is a preschool for everyone and your child will find the right one but you have to start with the footwork and tours. Good luck.
