Looking for a Charity for My Son to Donate Money To

When my son has earned enough magnets for good behavior during the week, he will get $3 allowance - $1 to save, $1 to spend and $1 to share. I'd like to give him a few options of charities where he could donate his "share" funds. Does anyone know of any good charities that would spark a kids interest? My hope is that he will discover a charity that tugs at his heart strings and make him feel good about helping, rather than just doing it because he has to.

FYI: He is only 4 years old so all he's really into right now is cars, cars and more cars. There is an non-profit animal shelter in our area (which will be one of the choices I give to him), but I want to give him other options, as well.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My husband and I are religious, however we have yet to figure out how to make church a part of our weekly routine since we've had kids. (I know, I know...that should be the first thing we fit in with everything else fitting in around it. But when you're sleep deprived (my kids do not sleep!) and we each get one weekend day to sleep in, neither one of us wants to give that up. I'm making it today's resolution to find a church near us that has evening service options.) Anyway! Giving to church is probably not going to be one of our options at this point, as result of that. But when we do start going, we will bring up his options again. I think we will use the local animal shelter, a Children's Hospital (his uncle died of childhood leukemia and we talk about this all the time), and I haven't chosen the third yet because you all gave me such great ideas! I want to look into the kiva website (if not for my son, for me!) but he also loves to read so it may be something like donating books (or money for books). Thanks so much for all of your suggestions! You truly are a wealth of information!

Save/Spend/Give--awesome! How very Dave Ramsay-esque!

I had a couple thoughts. He could "give his $1 per week to his "giving" envelope and before Christmas, take the $$ and buy Toys for Tots. (In his case, he could buy cars!)

If he likes animals, you could investigate Heifer International which provides goats, pigs, chickens, etc to third world country families, who then breed and pay it forward. It truly is life changing for those families to have an item of livestock.

Have fun!

How old is he?

How about something locally, right in your town?
That way, it will be more tangible for him, and perhaps he can even donate his time as well, together with you.

What are his interests?
Does he like animals?
Kids?
Homeless?
Kids who are underprivileged and need school supplies?
the Arts? programs that help needy kid?
Lots of options....

My daughter is 6 and has 6 chores so she gets $6. She on her own every week. Keeps $1 for her savings and gives $5 to church from her.

An animal cause might be good for a young boy. Maybe the Make-A-Wish foundation. Helping sick kids live their dreams is a great idea.

Does he like animals? You could introduce him to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) or the Humane Society of the United States.

What about a local children's hospital? Ours accepts donations to various departments as well as their free care fund for families who can't afford medical services. Maybe they also accept donations of new toys to hand out to patients as prizes after procedures, on their birthdays, etc. He could purcharse toy cars and donate them.

What is he interested in? Saving the planet? Missions? Helping ill children? Helping animals? That's the place to start. Of course, since my husband and I raise puppies for Canine Companions for Independence, I'll be glad to put in a plug for it! CCI raises and trains dogs to become companions and helpers for people with mobility problems. A couple of the dogs we have raised help children in wheelchairs. For more information, you and your son can go to www.cci.org. Hope this helps!

ask him who he would like to help. He may say children, then pick a charity for kids. He may say the homeless man he saw or someone he knows is sick. He may choose something he saw on t.v. Whatever he chooses just respect it and help him send it in.

Or........keep saving and at Christmas buy a toy for a child whose parents cannot afford to buy one for him. Kids love to do that!

What does he enjoy doing? I would look online by googling charities and then put what hobbies he enjoys. (E.G. if he likes reading look up something to do with books, etc.... If he likes planes there is a ministry that fly's medical patients around for free....).
Hope that helps.
